How many scans do you have at the moment? Do you plan to release any of the raw scans (downscaled to 1080p)?

Those are absolutely amazing. I am very impressed Poita and am following your progress

The raw scans are just over 20TB each, and like most prints, each one is not quite complete due to splices etc. some are missing small ranges of frames, others have bad damage to other parts etc.

Once I get the last three prints scanned I will have all frames, complete and no frames with particularly bad damage that don't have the same frame in good condition on another print.

Once that is done I can assemble the complete movies and create a 1080P workprint for each with timecode so that I can start logging the various issues that need attention and draw up a plan for getting it all done.

I've had a bunch of requests for ESB images, the ESB print is sitting beside the scanner, I am currently out of HDDs so can't start scanning it yet.

I will put up a video sample in a few weeks from SW or Jedi when I get a chance to backup and convert the scans to .EXR to give me back some space.

That's the 16mm version of Empire Strikes Back you're talking about, referred to earlier, or another.

Wow, excellent detail, looking great. :) Thanks for doing this, the expense and effort involved must be substantial, but I'm sure the fans here will step up to help out. Great job! :)

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

Had 4 x 5TB HDDs fail, which has caused a bit of a delay, but hopefully will be back on track soon.

Mr. Poita, I'm sure you already know this cause it's obvious. But ALL THE WORK you guys do to save star wars, you, Harmy, Verta, TN, etc. is greatly appreciated by all us lurking fans of these here forums and other websites. Just gotta say thank you. I'm sure there are a lot of people like me who don't post much, but our excitement is through the roof with all of this stuff. You are greatly appreciated.

Thanks, I really appreciate the support and feedback everyone gives here, and all the projects various people donate their time and expertise to creating.

After all the trials and tribulations of finding and obtaining prints, and getting the best scanners, and all of the machinations to make this stuff happen, it is frustrating holding it all up due to something so inane as storage failure and a lack of storage.

I just wish a HDD truck would crash in my front yard.

I've had a few PMs worried that it looks a bit 'dark', the original file is 16bits per pixel, so the shadow detail is all in there.

e.g. Here it is massively overexposed.

It's great to see that all the detail is still there in the dark areas and can be easily pulled out. :) That looks to be a great print

Thanks, the print was supposed to be cleaned before scanning, the cleaning wasn't anywhere near as thorough as it could have been, so there is more dirt than is strictly necessary to be cleaned up, but the shadow detail does seem to be intact on the print. Some prints of Jedi in particular just don't have anything in the shadows to extract.

I hope it will turn out to be useful in your efforts Adywan.

We hope your print of Empire is the one from the collector that has a good copy. Good luck with it.

No, this is a 'rented' print, I have another scanning now, and a third on the way but don't currently have enough drives to scan them due to a damn clump of drives failing.

Hopefully will be resolved soon.

The other films I am not working on until the trilogy is finished, but others can if they wish. The scans themselves are completed for the non SW stuff.

Very very excited by even the smallest amount of progress on this.

On the top of my personal list of other films that I'd love to see scanned for preservation would be the original THX 1138...for obvious reasons. Is that on your radar by chance?

I'll contact you by PM; I'd like to help finance your hard drive costs with a small donation...

I had a few PMs about the cropping on the Tech image I posted in the neg1 thread.

I am cropping off the rounded corners etc. leaving just a little more in the image than the theatrical cropping, so, yes there is some cropping of the image, but a bit less than in the cinema.

The scans have the full frame including sprockets and soundtrack, so it is archived in its complete state, but I prefer to have the finished product closely match the 1977 theatrical presentation.

For reference, here are the two Team-1 images from their Before & After videos they recently posted, that show pretty much the full frame.

The image from the old tech

Maybe someone could make one of those rollover image things that would show the cropping difference better, but in the meantime, both images resized to fit on the forum screen.

Amazing scan, despite what you say is an inferior print. If this is inferior I'm realy looking forward to what you have in store. :-)

Hey, do you happen to have any screens of another training shot, one of the ones where the lightsaber always looks white on the video transfers? Mike Verta has confirmed that it was clearly blue in every shot on theatrical prints in '77, and the bootleg videos from the original release seem to confirm this. But I'd love to see another screen from this "inferior" print if you have one.

I'll put money it is just the exposure on the camera that took the photo of that tech strip, all the whites look blown out in that image.

Sure just post me which frame you want and I will dig it out.

The individual frames from this print aren't that bad, but I am not using it as the damage is extreme in the print, and the contrast isn't as good as some of the others. These frames have had cleanup done, but not colour adjustment, and the cleanup wasn't complete (you can still see plenty of damage in those two images), it is just as far as I got before moving on to better prints.
