About this matte we talked a while ago:

After an analysis I made (that I will post on my thread after the Falcon issue) I concluded that the transports scale is really wrong, the right transport in the background is missing its cockpit/pod and its landing gear doen't touch the ground.

I've done a mock-up to see if it's possible to solve the problems without actually changing the size of the matte:

Nice!

And I always felt that this scene was awfully quiet for an evacuation, it's especially true with this background guys now scaled down, so here's another one with more things going on:

Where would the “more things going on” come from?  Shoot new footage?  Just how sophisticated is this operation?

Ady has a whole 2nd unit at his disposal (cant remember his screenname, all i remember is that he was called Ming alot)

That does look a lot better, but as Bingo pointed out, the lower left area is an issue (specifically the tubes on the ground, as the distance perspective jumps between the rebel on the right edge by the boxes and the X-wing pilot).

I think the biggest issue is that the overall perspective is all wrong.  Considering the perspective of the 3 actors in the foreground, we should see more of the ceiling and less of the floor, as the camera would be closer to the ground and thus have a different angle to achieve the mid and background seen in the matte.

The vanishing point should be somewhere around the X-wing pilot (probably below him).  A potential solution would be to move the rest of the matte down to match that vanishing point - the freighter behind the 3 foreground rebels could retain its position, with maybe an added bit of detail regarding the bottom area of the freighter to consider the different angle.

I will try to create an example in a bit...

Okay, here are some suggestions in regards to perspective:

This vanishing point example is still a little too high, and the matte perspective needs to be completely changed (hence I can understand why Ady is building a miniature set to account for this).

Here is a crude example:

Even this is off, as the vanishing point perspective still needs to be even lower (the "3 rebels" camera is roughly between waste and shoulder level, whereas the unaltered matte camera is somewhere around 10 to 15 feet off the floor)... regardless, you get the idea.

Adding some layers of animated freezing mist (interacting with the light sources) would also add to the illusion of depth and match it up better with the set shots.

I agree, to the degree that it would add some life to essentially a freeze frame image.  But it would have to be an effect added after any and all fixes on the matte itself (be it creating a new matte or an actual miniature set to achieve the proper camera angle).

They’re standing on a platform?

Time is running out for the Rebels. Antilles upcourt to Skywalker. He’s being paced by Darth Va— the bone-jarring pick by Solo! He came out of nowhere! Skywalker’s open from way outside, he launches at the buzzer... Good! It’s good! The Rebels win on a sensational buzzer beater by Luke Skywalker! Let’s take another look at that last shot. He just does get it off in time. Wow, what a shot. That’s why they call him Luke Legend.

That may be the most exciting battle I have ever been privileged to broadcast. Certainly the most dramatic finish. We’ll get you an update on the Artoo Detoo injury situation in just a moment. Right now let’s go courtside where SuperShadow is waiting with Chewbacca.

This is real sloppy (working with MS paint on my laptop right now.. wish they had a clone function on that thing), but a bit better (just made the mid ground rebels closer):

I would also bring the freighter right behind the "3 amigos" closer (about a quarter inch bigger, expanding it 1/4 inch down and to the right, so the upper tip of the nose would slightly cover the first ceiling light)

Awesome mockups savmagoett and Monroville! That right there is an example of this thread at its best.

I think ady is going to try to do all of the above and more with this shot, in proper perspective and everything. (fingers crossed) We know he wants to use that matte. And I, for one, would love to see that level of activity in the background. Between adywan and the 2nd unit, they could easily pull it off.

Okay, one last one:

I brought the transport behind the 3 amigos closer to bring some added dimension.  Granted, some lighting effects still need to be applied to help seperate the 3 amigos from the transport (as there is too much blue, which makes them blend in).  Things like added light FX and the aforementioned mist floating in front of the lights (as well as having the rebels in the mid-ground go through the lights, lightening and darkening as they move through the general paths of light above them).

Just a few quick answers for the moment:

A-man, is that onboard graphics you have? A better video car will help with the lagging in Vegas. Laragith codec does cause a bit of lagging but it seems to be pretty much eliminated since i got the new graphics card. If you want to just check a section you can just highlight it then press "shift+b" and this will give you a RAM preview. How long you get is dependant on you machine. If you are trying to do an audio track and the lagging is preventing this then create a MPEG2 render of your video and import that then use this track for your main video while working on audio. You won't get any lagging

The Emperors dialogue will be the way it was in 1980, apart from maybe having "Young" instead of "Luke" unless i can get it to sound seemless. It will not contain any of the 2004 dialogue. This extra dialogue was unnecessary and one of the worse additions to the DVD set next to Hayden ghost.

Great mockups savmagoett. I'm adding a lot of background activity to give a greater depth and sense of scale to the transport hangars. Making the foreground smaller is impossible because there are some that walk off screen, including Ralph McQuarrie, and i don't want to lose his cameo

The problem to me is like the forground figures are sort of lost in space hovering above everything.

In this example I tried to ground them in a dark control room and out the window we would see all of the action of the transports and the people hurrying around.

Obviously an alt. would be a brighter control room or something like that but at least from this you guys can see what I mean. If there were originally an establishing shot of the guys up on a raised platform this shot wouldn't seem so weird.

Hey! that might work! The lighting has hard shadows on the  actors but smooth in the BG. It can sure show some contrast and more claustrophobic feel.

Even i like the opened matte with the scale know takes place and showing at last something grand i like this aproach too.

Well done ;)

That is a cool idea.  Sluggo approves.

Thanks guys. Back when I was drawing comics and had issues with backgrounds sometimes I found an option was to just creatively block out the problem spots. lol

After my analysis I think the Correct scale of the transport is more 120M than the official 90M. My privious mock-up was more like 90m transport, so I made another mock-up (below) refining things a little, while I was preparing the photoshop file for you guys.

I've included a scale chart of the correct 120 m length transport into the file.

I'm having some difficulties uploading it with yousendit, any ideas how to share à 300Mb file easy, quick and free?

Rapidshare :)

Or you can split it in two parts with HJspliter ;)

EDIT: what did you include in the psd and its so big?

When a psd of mine is 300+ mb it has mad scales and myriads of layers.. You may want to reduce the size of the canvas a bit?

This really makes those lights up there huge! I'm really liking the new scale but maybe the lights could be addressed as well. But then I dunno how much of Ralph's work should be altered. Either way, looking forward to how it will all turn out in the end.

MegaUpload has free accounts and 300MB is no problem there.

I just found this on my computer...

... Too high or the BG ones are too low (rather too small). Pick one. Perspective will save you.
