I’ve finally reached the dreaded third season of TOS and… I don’t think it’s all that bad. Sure, Spock’s Brain is bad, but it’s kinda fun. Really, the only episode that I’ve gotten little to no enjoyment from so far is And The Children Shall Lead. There’s some genuinely good episodes here, though, like The Enterprise Incident, and especially Spectre of the Gun. Overall, it’s not as good as the previous two seasons, but so far (last episode watched was Day of the Dove) I’m quite liking a lot of it.

Where were you in '77?

I actually like The Way To Eden. It’s goofy and dumb, but enjoyable. And The Savage Curtain has a special charm.

MST3K used “Help me, Spock!” quite a bit, usually when a character in a movie was walking into an obvious trap.
Enterprise referenced the infamous Col. Green at one point. Green and a certain Orkan seem to have the same tailor.

I liked “Spectre of the Gun” the first time I watched it – mostly for the surreal atmosphere – but it didn’t hold up upon a re-watch. The reveal at the end that no one was ever in actual danger the whole episode did it in for me.
I don’t know. If they had not overcome their fears and impressed the Melkotians at the same time, they could still have died. Pretty sure Chekov was temporarily dead?
DeForest Kelley must have been having flashbacks to all the Westerns he did making that episode.

Star Trek: The Whale One had the best villain IMO, in the form of the inability to communicate. It’s the perfect distillation of the concept of a villain for the Star Trek universe.

My sister and I were the only two people in the theater. Loved it!

He said he was featured, and he went on to talk about how cool it was to meet and talk to Denise Crosby. I haven’t watched Trekkies so I wouldn’t know. I’ll have to watch it and tell you if I see him. He said he was wearing a DS9 era uniform with red, if that helps at all.

Super deformed vinyl figures aren’t really my thing, but the head sculpts on these are really nice.

According to Fuller, the timeline “came pretty organically, because we are going to try to achieve a new look for Star Trek that is very much Star Trek, but also our interpretation of Star Trek.”
“One of the very cool things that we get to do on this show is – we get to re-imagine all of the alien species that we’ve seen before in the series, and do something a little unique with that.
We were looking at a specific species’ costume on Friday, and Jesse Alexander, who is one of the writers, was commenting on the cosplay aspects of it, and how [the design] has gone a kind of quantum leap forward – and what were the people who do cosplay going to do?
Another one of our writers was like, “They are going to rise to the occasion!” So for all of us who have fetishized the look of all of the various species over the years of watching Star Trek , it’s fun for us to put a new spin on old favorites.”
Fuller was asked specifically about Klingons, but didn’t reveal whether or not they’d feature the signature cranial ridges (absent from Star Trek episodes set around this timeline).
Despite being set in the same era as the original Star Trek, Discovery won’t be beholden to the TOS designs, even when it comes to Starfleet uniforms. Fuller described the new uniforms as “something completely different.”
Well, they did ruin Klingons when they redesigned them for the movies and onward. And the Trill for DS9. And wait, this is normal stuff and usually turns out alright.

For a show set ten years before TOS, it’s a slippery slope if they change too much.
Where were you in '77?
Since I’ve always felt that later incarnations of Trek should’ve approached TOS in a “broad strokes” manner, playing fast and loose with the TOS aethetics doesn’t particularly bother me. I’m more concerned with the tone of the show.
I can buy uniforms changing. We’ve had plenty of those. Change the iconic aliens we all know by heart, and sooner or later you’re going to have to explain it. The Klingon ridges were finally explained on Enterprise.

I too can accept uniform changes, but NOT alien changes. It’s a stupid, stupid idea.
Hmmm, all the recent official comments about the various ‘re-imagined’ elements have definately made up my mind about how I’m going to approach this upcoming show now.
Personally, I’m hoping that this latest STAR TREK ‘spin-off’ turns out to be a very watchable success…however, I’ve no doubt that it will end up having a very different look, and tone to the classic show in many ways…and despite the fact that it’s ‘supposed’ to be a ‘pre-TOS’ story/setting in the same ‘prime’ timeline as the original show, it’s looking more and more like there’s going to be a lot of ‘re-designing’ of familiar TOS elements overall - which is fair enough…but I’ve decided I’ll enjoy STAR TREK DISCOVERY a whole lot more if I look on it as being set in an ‘alternate universe/timeline’, with NO connection to the original show’s ‘prime’ universe/timeline and characters whatsoever. 😃
