and some prefer the classics. But even if you don’t want to go back that far, there aren’t any Hammer movies on it either.

I was torn between including B&W, silent or foreign films or making a list more accessible for people who would normally avoid such films.

These are the films that very nearly got included:
Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Psycho (1960)
Nosferatu (1922)
The Birds (1963)
Repulsion (1965)
Frankenstein (1931)
Freaks (1932)
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Les Diaboliques (1955)

I also wondered about including Evil Dead II (1987), but ultimately it lost out as The Evil Dead made the list.

Amityville II: The Possession (1982)

If you have to have a film like The Conjuring the first Amityville film is an obvious alternative but the second one is actually a rather intense and odd little underrated semi precious stone of a movie. A Zirconia in the rough. Cheesy but certainly worth a visit.

I guess these are the horror films I’d watch throughout October. I don’t own most of these movies, though, so this list is purely ideal.

  3. Mr. Sardonicus (1961)
  4. The Masque of the Red Death (1964)
  5. The Phantom of the Opera (1925)
  6. Phantom of the Paradise (1974)
  7. The Pit and the Pendulum (1961)
  8. The Pit and the Pendulum (1991)
  9. Big Meat Eater (1982)
  10. Sleepaway Camp (1983)
  11. The 'Burbs (1989)
  12. Dead of Night (1945)
  13. After Midnight (1989)
  14. Carnival of Souls (1962)
  15. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
  16. Incubus (1966)
  17. The Seventh Seal (1957)
  18. Prince of Darkness (1987)
  19. The Ninth Configuration (1980)

I’d like to throw Blue Velvet and An American Werewolf in London out there too. At some point I’ll try to string together my own list, but right now I cannot be arsed.

Eh, if Willy Wonka counts then Blue Velvet should. In any event, it was part of my Halloween week itinerary last year and it worked wonderfully.

I certainly won’t be reaching 31 films this month, but I am going to try to watch as much as I can. So far I’ve seen the 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers (good), It Follows (great), and The Conjuring 2 (meh).

I’m just watching the Universal Monsters films (Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolf Man, Mummy, Invisible Man) from 1931 - 1951. I’ve not seen these in many many years and have been enjoying them more then I had in the past.

My 12yr old daughter and I love these films. Nothing beats the black and white horror films of old.

My updated list:

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
It Follows
The Conjuring 2
The Brood
The Evil Dead (1981)
The Witch
Hellbound: Hellraiser II (I don’t feel like reviewing all of these, but I want to note that this movie was an absolute dumpster fire)
The Others

Hoping to knock out Psycho and a few others this weekend.

I’ve done these so far this weekend:

The Fall of the House of Usher (1960)
Psycho (1960)
Nosferatu The Vampyre (1979)
Q: The Winged Serpent (1982)

That puts me at twelve so far. I think I can probably hit twenty by the end of the month, but thirty-one is well out of reach.

Pfft. Why watch that stupid old movie when you can watch the newer (which automatically equals better) remake?

See that? Christopher Lee ain’t got nothin’ on Kung Fu Cage!

Author

I just watched the remake not that long ago when it showed up on Netflix. Still need to see the original.
