Derivative of what? There were black astromechs in the OT.

well, i guess i may be wrong then, but it still feels derivative to me. on first glance it looks exactly like someone took R2 and put a paint job on him reminiscent of vaders shoulder armour from his reveal at the end of ROTS. thats why i called it derivative. but i suppose we have found prior art. its just, choosing the most reconizable droid, and giving him a new paint job, isn’t what star wars needs in these new movies. or isn’t what i want at least.

I really don’t understand that complaint, the OT is filled with other R2 units. I doubt this droid holds any prominence in the film. Remember all the hullabaloo over Constable Zuvio before TFA was released?

Good luck spotting him in the final film.

“NEW NOVEL SYNOPSIS REVEALS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN JYN ERSO, HER FATHER AND DIRECTOR KRENNIC!”

“James Luceno’s upcoming novel Catalyst, which serves as a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, has just received a synopsis by Del Rey revealing lots of interesting new details about the relationship between the main characters from the highly anticipated first Star Wars spin-off movie. Check it out…”

War is tearing the galaxy apart. For years the Republic and the Separatists have battled across the stars, each building more and more deadly technology in an attempt to win the war. As a member of Chancellor Palpatine’s top secret Death Star project, Orson Krennic is determined to develop a superweapon before their enemies can. And an old friend of Krennic’s, the brilliant scientist Galen Erso, could be the key.

Galen’s energy-focused research has captured the attention of both Krennic and his foes, making the scientist a crucial pawn in the galactic conflict. But after Krennic rescues Galen, his wife, Lyra, and their young daughter, Jyn, from Separatist kidnappers, the Erso family is deeply in Krennic’s debt. Krennic then offers Galen an extraordinary opportunity: to continue his scientific studies with every resource put utterly at his disposal. While Galen and Lyra believe that his energy research will be used purely in altruistic ways, Krennic has other plans that will finally make the Death Star a reality. Trapped in their benefactor’s tightening grasp, the Ersos must untangle Krennic’s web of deception to save themselves and the galaxy itself.

This also explains why Galen Erso would be the one who gives the Rebels the heads-up on the contruction of the Death Star (as was revealed in the international trailer a few weeks ago).

I seem to remember a story in the old EU where Luke meets the developer of… something related to the Death Star or Star Destroyers or something and he’s hiding from the Empire because he’s mortified at how his research was used… I think?

Wow… I am loving that cover!

The most interesting thing is how the Rogue One story is connected to the PT era:

For years the Republic and the Separatists have battled across the stars

Could be fun if LFL decided to produce a Clone Wars story arc based on this new material regarding the DS construction near the end of the conflict. A slight temporal weirdness of ROTS could consequently be corrected. But still, the CW during only 3 years and a few months always seems a little bit short for me.

If the CW was prolonged we could have seen the general decay of the galaxy as the war waged and by the end of ROTS things could have looked more like it did in the OT.

I’m not a Vader purist, but I can tell that he looks good on this card. But I don’t mind the 3 (4 ? ESB and ROTJ have the exact same look, haven’t they ?) Vader looks we’ve seen so far. He’ll probably just appear less than 5 minutes in Rogue One anyway.

Also note, armor is ROTS, and helmet… maybe an ESB with ANH colors. Again, not a Vader purist.

Other than the red lenses which screams SW we can’t give an informed opinion until we are least see a full frontal view of him. From this limited view I can say the helmet is definitely SW and but his armor is hard to classify as we don’t see a lot of it.

is that an official card?

Yes

I wouldn’t form any opinions based on artwork. Who knows what they used as a model. Best to wait for actual photographs.

Just came here to post this synopsis, but it looks like I’ve been beaten to the punch. This novel has been on my radar for a while, but now that I know it’s set farther back in the timeline and isn’t so much a direct lead-in to Rogue One as it is deep background info, I’m actually a lot more interested in it.

Overall things are looking pretty good.

There is nothing on the armor suggesting it’s ROTS. The OT chest armor was three pieces: one for the chest and two separate shoulder pieces. ROTS had this single unsightly piece that included the chest and shoulder armor all together. The shoulders here are covered by the cape, so at this point it’s unclear what the armor is.

The outer robe here is worn under the armor, as it was in ROTS, TESB, and ROTJ. I can understand why they made this change, as Vader simply looks more aggressive with the armor on top of the robe.

The chest box is accurate to ANH (and ROTS) since it has the green button.

The helmet is a little hard to make out. The true calling card of the ANH helmet is the widow’s peak. I think I can vaguely make one out here, but it’s hard to be sure.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

well it’s official, a kind of ANH/ESB hybrid. And yeah, the stuff sideshow had at SDCC was definately the RO Vader.

While I’d prefer a really accurate recreation of the ANH suit, I think this is probably he next best thing, and it looks pretty great. WAAAAAAAAY better than ROTS! Thank goodness!

They gave Vader a gun??? What is Hasbro smoking? Imperial Landing Bay Guy was one thing, but this is a dark lord of the Sith! He strangles people that aren’t even in the same room!

Somebody has already posted pics of the full suit. I think maybe at the time it wasn’t clear if that’s what it was, but I’d say since it lines up with this card, it’s the RO Vader. It seems to be a SW/ESB mash-up.

I’m about to go back through the thread to find it. Thanks for making me aware of this man 😄

That’s true. We can only make assessments when stills of Vader in Rogue One are released. And even certain things like the red lenses can be changed before the films release though I doubt they would do such a thing for continuity’s sake.

I’m glad the cool gloves from SW are back. I’ve never cared for the TESB + ROTJ gloves.

I don’t quite see the difference with ROTS for the suit. The helmet I get it, but the suit ?

Hey, his tabard thing is worn over his chest armor on that figure. Neat!
