Tapes may simply be an archaic term still in use that refers to newer technology, much like when people say they filmed something with a digital camera.

“Archaic” is a bit harsh, isn’t it?
(I mean tapes aren’t that old, and film is still used quite often.)

EDIT:
Never mind, I just looked up the word and it does work for something only relatively old. There’s just something about “Archaic” that makes something sound so ancient.

So why did they use tapes in Star Wars? They have advanced technology. Why would they use something as inconvenient as a tape?

(from a comment I made on a similar subject in Off-Topic)
Yeah, It’s almost as if Star Wars all happened in the past and in a galaxy that doesn’t match up with our own.
A Long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… If you will.
Oh…

cmon, they talk about tapes but that dont look like a tape leia sticks in r2. So why can’t they just call it a data disc or data card?

We are talking about a universe where some people are using ancient weapons that are no substitute for a good blaster at your side. 😉

And maybe the Empire’s tech support guys are old geezers who still swear by tape backup drives, which made it easier for the Rebel spies to purloin a copy.

Where were you in '77?

You must have missed the part where I said that they still could have redubbed the lines in 2004 or 2011.

The actor was probably still alive then so they could have used him still and it wouldn’t have to sound very different. GL probably could have got him for cheap too cause I don’t think he became a big actor or anything.

The movie taking place a long time ago don’t have any bearing cause Leia clearly wasn’t inserting a tape into R2. It was either a card or disc.

You’re missing the point that it doesn’t matter because it doesn’t have to line up with our world. Star Wars all takes place in the past of a far away galaxy. It isn’t supposed to be our future.
The same goes for why they call it a “tape” when it doesn’t look like the tapes in out world. It isn’t our world.
You also must have missed the part where most people here prefer the original version of the films and hate seeing these kinds of pointless changes.

Because you’re probably the only person to have ever thought about it.

I don’t remember any data tapes in the PT…which makes it automatically superior to the OT.

the PT had digital glowy hologram archives, which come to think of it, did lose data! those old geezers in the death star were right to use tape!

When I was little wireless was an archaic term for a radiogram.

Now I wish they’d called it a wax cylinder instead of a tape.

So do you guys like that the prequels made star wars popular again? I wasn’t that interested in seeing the old movies until the new ones started coming out. While I saw the SE once on VHS It didn’t take and I didn’t see what the big deal was. It was episode 3 that got me to watch and rewatch the whole series. Surely having new fans benifits you guys somehow. Don’t you like that a geeky sci-fi film series got to be somewhat cool?

When was Star Wars ever unpopular? There were some quiet periods in the late 80’s to early 90’s, but it never really went away. The merchandising machine woke up several years before the SE’s.

I’m shocked – shocked, I say.

Despite only having a few years with the OT before 1997 and 1999, if anything, I’d say that the influx of fans due to the PT has been more of a pain than anything. I dunno how many times I’ve had to explain the revisionism to PT fans, or gotten in arguments about why x change was bad.

I wouldn’t say it’s been cool since 1977. I’d say it became more like T2. People who saw it thought it was cool in their heads, but it became dated and less must see every passing year. Not unlike alot of sci-fi. Only cool in fans minds, ya know.

I just came back from my vacation in Croatia and one of the villages next to the hotel was called Podrace. Well, not exactly, there was an accent on top of the c to make it sound like “ch”, the actual name is Podrače.

And at a tourist market in the next city, I found merchandise from my favorite scinece-fiction movie: SPACE WARS
I didn’t take pictures, but it looked like this;

You’re wrong. It was still commonly referred to in TV shows, music, movies and all forms of popular entertainment. It was near the top of all “best films” lists and was well respected.
The PT may have been appealing to babies, but adults largely found it stupid. Yet, the OT remained well loved. It’s endured despite the stupid PT and silly SE, not because of them. They are classic, well made films and those types will never go out of style with general audiences.
