Yeah, that was one area the PT was very good about. They made sure to include classic species to help tie everything together:
Greedo really tied the room together.
The Shoretrooper (hate the name) looks more “Star Wars” than anything since ROTJ. (Maybe even since ESB?) I love it.
Well, this furry guy (that we saw in the BTS video) is apparently called “Moroff” and is a Rebel soldier that will be seen on Scarif;
And of course, he’s gotten his own action figure;
He’s also quite tall. Based on the BTS footage I assumed that we was quite small, but judging by this action figure he stands at roughly Chewbacca height. (This photo shows his height much better)

I’d like to see more OT aliens in the ST. New stuff is cool and all, but lets have some connection here. One Rodian or Twi’lek in Maz’s Castle would have helped a lot.

Well, we did get both Nien Nunb and Ackbar at the Resistance Base.

And now we have a wampa with a robot mouth.

Yeah, but they were the only two and they’re actual characters we know so it’s not too big a deal seeing them again.
It almost feels like they’re going out of their way to ignore the OT aliens.

I think a lot of folks don’t like the OT aliens. I’ve had to defend the characters in the bar in Star Wars many times, even on this site. People think they look fake and the designs are lame. The success of their execution is debatable but the designs are great.

Yeesh, if anything I feel like the PT and ST aliens fall a bit on the “manufactured” side of things, even the physical props. I mean, I love things like the Wolfman and stuff, but even just having a Duros or a Trandoshan or something in there would really connect the trilogies.

Maz doesn’t allow Rodians in her bar. Someone keeps shooting them under the table. 😉

Looks more like a respirator/filter to me. And just because they have white fur doesn’t mean it’s a Wampa. 😉

I know. I was just offering Tyrph some support. 😉
Yeah, that was one area the PT was very good about. They made sure to include classic species to help tie everything together:
These new films are severely lacking in this department.
They really had the Biths with their instruments in the pod race crowd? Of course, George probably intended that it’s the exact same bunch of fellows who played in Mos Eisely decades later. 😉
And aside from Biths and Rodians, note it’s mostly aliens only previously seen in ROTJ.

Oh?
=P
And let’s not forget that the Nemoidians were originally supposed to be Duros.
Were those guys in the TPM senate scenes? I have a hard time spotting the trio of E.T.'s.
And I was referencing the Tatooine scenes. Sorry I did not make that clear.
I thought the Nemoidians were Duros too.

Personally I’m quite happy to see new alien species that manage to fit in with the OT aesthetic. The prequels relying so heavily on previously seen aliens as background fodder was just another example of universe shrinking IMO.
These new rogue one aliens look awesome. I’m not opposed to seeing a familiar alien face here or there throughout the films, but when you start seeing the same familiar aliens more frequently than new aliens it starts to feel lazy and less believable.

Yeah, I don’t want to make it seem like I’m opposed to new aliens. Like I said, just having one or two recognizable faces in the backgrounds of Maz’s Castle or on Jakku would have been plenty.

I guess I just don’t mind there being a limited number of intelligent aliens. I’d much rather see familiar designs with a few new ones here n’ there than the other way around.
My problem with the PT aliens is that each one clearly had one mask mold. I appreciate that they painted em all a bit different, but it was clearly the same mask. They all had the same facial expressions and the same proportions. Or maybe I’m racist.
I agree, honestly. I didn’t particularly feel like it shrank the universe myself, but it does seem like they’re more interested in creating new designs. I’m okay with that too, but they could at least throw us a bone beyond bringing back two established characters.

Wouldn’t that technically be “speciest”?

That’s still two more than they brought back for ESB. All new creatures for that one 😉
We saw a lot of familiar creatures in the PT, ANH & ROTJ mainly because of Tatooine. TFA had all new worlds, just like ESB. The only two films in the saga so far that don’t feature that planet. Personally i love seeing new designs and i hope they stick with this direction.
New aliens are cool but it starts to feel like it’s a different galaxy when there’s a dearth of previously established species. There needs to be a mix.
Jedit: This is not the post you are looking for…
There were some background aliens in Cloud City, (that appear to be reuse of Cantina masks) but they’re hard to spot in the finished film.
I never even knew there was an alien Bespin guard until a few years ago.
