They changed what is considered canon officially now? Thank God. I knew allowing various authors the ability to write canon would be bad unless they really policed them, like they do in Star Trek.
They have, yes. Basically everything created before The Force Awakens came out (with a few exceptions like the first six films, The Clone Wars TV series, and a few short stories leading up to TFA) has been relegated to “Legends” status, which is all still available, but no longer canon, regardless of its previous “canonical level”.
Everything created after The Force Awakens is all top-level canon, which means that all of it is as canon as the movies. There is now a group of people at LucasFilm called the “Story Group” that have final say in whether or not a story or project is created as well as input in the creation of new stories.
However, as far as a lot of people are concerned, the Story Group’s judgement isn’t amazing and the state of the New Expanded Universe isn’t too much better right now than the Old Expanded Universe.
