Supposing Disney releases the Star Wars Holiday Special on disc

Author

Would you like if they offered 2 versions. One with original coloring, and one with coloring matching the current Star Wars movies?

I already saw it with the corrective coloring in that special edition they released with the Rifftrax. I wouldn’t mind seeing an attempt at coloring it to look similar to the re-released movies and the prequels.

It’s really not worth the money or time. The first reaction a random person finding a copy on a shelf is going to be something like “What’s this, isn’t this that one Star Wars thing that was shown only once and never seen again because it was so terrible?”. Or if you want to go full purist, it would something like “Huh? First more female characters and now this? Disney will do anything for a quarter! Fuck this shit, Star Wars is dead!”. But even then we don’t even need an official release anyway since we can simply punch “Star Wars Holiday Special” into Youtube and find full, unedited bootleg copies.

You wouldn’t mind that the colors would be completetely wrong? Weird.

They might go back and remaster the 35mm film inserts, but not much else.

If Lucas won’t let them release the unaltered OT he sure as he’ll won’t let the release the Holiday Special. Heach hates that even more.
The cartoon segment however might be released one day as a bonus feature (properly at least).

Star Wars is Surrealism, not Science Fiction (essay)
Original Trilogy Documentaries/Making-Ofs (YouTube, Vimeo, etc. finds)

Lucas doesn’t get to decide what Disney is allowed to release.

I’m pretty sure that 20th Century Fox still has the distribution rights to the OT. And if Lucas hadn’t a say in it you’d think they’d make some form of release of the unaltered OT by now.

Disney can do whatever they want, they just have to get Fox to agree to release it. They’re not the ones holding back a OOT release, since they want all the money they can get.

Sure, but only as a hidden easter egg. That’s why I wrote “properly”.

They used an ancient analog video master to boot. I hope the actual film is safe somewhere.

I thought it was on the Blu set in plain sight…but I don’t remember for sure.

The YouTube rip RiffTrax released with their commentary is color corrected? By whom? This is news to me.

I feel like I watched it a few years ago on that set but I don’t recall having to hunt for it.

I didn’t watch it on youtube. I downloaded a iso off pirate bay. It has the original audio or rifftrax audio selectable. It also has commmercials embedded and colors corrected. It was made with the best video source available. Think they said it was a 1st generation VHS.

Oh, this isn’t the version on RiffTrax’s site at all, this is probably version 1 of Zion’s restoration or someone else’s. Depending on whose restoration it is, it could be color corrected to look like anything.

I re-read the original post, you’re asking the eventual official release to be color corrected to look like shit. I get it now.

Technically speaking and like ANH, wouldn’t Fox co-own the Holiday Special too being they co-produced it as well?

That’s a good question! And with George out of the picture, they might be able to release it just to tweak the mouse’s nose.
