Frink, I’m sure you have a good picture of Ric for this.

I think he means an atheist who is forced to go there would be weirded out by such a place.
Well, yeah. I was just confused by his statement, because it sounded like he was entertaining the idea that an atheist would go to a Bible Camp. I’m not sure why an atheist would ever be forced to go to there.
And I’d like to note that not everything that happens there is religious “Church stuff”. A lot of time is actually spent on sports activities.

Parents.
I guess I didn’t consider the idea that an atheist kid would have die hard Christian parents that would send them to a Church based summer camp that a lot of Christian kids don’t even go to. Sorry.
I don’t think the scenario is completely implausible, I just didn’t think about it because it’s not something I would expect to occur very often.

If I were an atheist kid in a family that believed in bible camp, I’m guessing they wouldn’t want to know (or believe) I was an atheist.

I’m sure there are some wackos that would do something even more drastic. I’m glad even something like that is a rarity.
Back in January of this year (I believe it was either the 29th or the 30th), I received the ability to speak in other tongues from God. I’ve tried to keep in practice, praying in the spirit and getting closer to God. It hadn’t gotten nearly as good as I would have hoped since then, but I strive further nonetheless.
Can you clarify? Do you mean speaking gibberish? I don’t want to sound like I’m getting on a moral high horse; I mean, back when I was a little wild I used to think I was “possessed” during music events, so don’t think I’m coming to this from some kind of purity angle. The speaking in tongues thing has always weirded me out though because I knew some kids whose parents tried to force them to do it, and watching it was one of the freakiest things I’ve seen in my life. Then in a somewhat recent born again phase I thought of it as witchcraft or demonic possession or whatever. I’m curious if we’re talking the same thing though, because the “speaking in tongues” that I saw was genuinely disturbing and is burned into my head to this very day.

I was forced to go to a tennis camp as a kid. Everything has gone wrong since.

I’ll bet you didn’t even believe that the tennis balls existed.

I think I’m missing this joke.
EDIT: Actually, I guess you could say that I was a tennis agnostic. I questioned the existence of non-contact sports at the time. It really put me in a crisis of identity.

I wasn’t aware that one could “learn” it. I thought it was a spur of the moment thing due to inspiration being directed at someone by God during prayer. I’m not trying to be mean either I just don’t quite understand how one has to learn it. I thought the experience was referred to as being “touched” by the hand of God.

Whether learned or not, if it’s the type of speaking in tongues that I think it is, it freaks me out.

Speaking in other tongues, referring to the same sort of thing that happened to the believers in the upper room on the day of Pentecost. You know, when all of them had tongues of fire sitting over their heads as they were spiritually baptized in the Holy Ghost and they all began to speak in languages that they knew not? Remember that super important piece of Biblical history?
(Read the first two chapters of Acts.)
I don’t think there was flame hovering over me, but it happened, and it was really cool and weird experience. I can just speak through the spirit whenever I want now.

Yes, I have read Acts at least a dozen times, and I do remember that. If you remember the super important piece of apostolic writing that is 1 Corinthians 14 it borderline condemned speaking in tongues; it definitely encouraged weariness relating to the subject and referred to it as one of the least of gifts. The tongues thing was also portrayed throughout Acts as primarily a means of communicating with people across language barriers.
I don’t think there was flame hovering over me, but it happened, and it was really cool and weird experience. I can just speak through the spirit whenever I want now.
That’s my question, what happened? I mean what happened in detail. I’m not sure if you’re practicing speaking in tongues the way I think of it.
I’m really not sure if I know what it is you’re talking about. Could you clarify on what you mean by “I knew some kids whose parents tried to force them to do it…”?
Yes, they made him speak in tongues so he faked it, which I guess kept them satisfied. The family was involved in some kind of Charismatic Church that strongly emphasized glossolalia. The image of their babbling was burned into my mind.

Yeah, I’m curious how you would “learn” to speak in tongues. It’s not something you hear about much in Catholicism.
I might have spoken too soon about my nosebleeds… I had a couple today (really short ones though, thank goodness).
My brother had that same problem earlier in the year, Ric. Like faucet-level torrents of blood. Turns out he’d broken vein up there somehow that wouldn’t heal properly and he had to go get it cauterized several times before they finally got it.

I had a friend start mumbling the lyrics to Mr. Boombastic when he was surrounded at a church and everyone had their hands on him. I was a believer at the time, but always hated the way the church would surround somebody who didn’t ask for it. The congregation bought it. He never came back.

I had to do that when I was about 14! I had to get it cauterized four times in one night!
I hope your problem with it ends quick, Ric!

I know a few things here and there. LOL
I am wondering if MfM is referring to they type of “speaking in tongues” that happens during possession? As far as I know, what you are referring to is how I described it but I guess it is a positive possession of sorts compared to an evil one, correct?
I have always believed that the speaking in tongues thing during Pentecost was them merely speaking in other languages that they did not previously learn to speak. I mean languages spoke in other countries. I think MFM is referring to a kind of tongues that isn’t an actual known language.
This whole thing doesn’t sound like a good news at all… if it happened to me I would be worried about my mental health.

Hey, if, in the 21st Century, Christians want to believe they can speak in tongues, despite that they’re own bible says (or at least implies) that they can’t and definitely says they shouldn’t, that’s their business.
