So yesterday I talked to a guy who worked on some of the effects in TFA. (Notably, he did the crawl)
He confirmed that there were some differences between the theatrical cuts in the US versus overseas. He said some of the smaller effects were not entirely finished when the film was shipped. He didn’t get into specifics but for one instance. The holographic map to Luke. He stated that in some version (I believe he says the UK version) it did not have a line showing the path to Luke and was just the map itself. In other places around the world the line was orange, and in some the line was red.
He said that the 2D, United States theatrical version is what ended up on the bluray.

Interesting! I wonder if there will be anyone who gets their hands on a print of the overseas version. I bet it might end up being useful for a fan edit or something of the sort.

I wish that instead of them waisting time on a last-minute, Palpatine-by-another-name CGI hologram, we just heard Snoke’s voice and Snoke’s appearance would be left to VIII or IX, where they would have more time to work on it and JJ “must rehash everything” Abrams wouldn’t ruin it.

JJ didn’t write his Star Trek’s at all, but it’s mostly somehow his fault that some people don’t like them. People just blame directors for things.
