^Yep. Love the comic, but scared to see how Snyder ruined it beyond what I’ve already read online (Nite Owl II is young, confident, and possibly sadistic; ending is wrong; etc.)

Wow, didn’t expect it to be that good. Zach Snyder created a spectacularly odd fable involving superhero characters. It’s no ordinary comic book movie, check it out!

I’d rather read the comic. At least then I could avoid the horrible soundtrack and Snyder’s awful style.

Same.
And, just for the record, Snyder didn’t “create” that world or fable. He just made a movie about it.

That picture is still one heck of a weird fanboy dream mixed with a complete mismatching of ideals. I’m glad I read the comic first before seeing the thing one empty Sunday in an IMAX show. (An empty theater with nothing but me and the big blue…appendage blown up to IMAX size.) Though from what I understand the Director’s cut is better and there is another Ultimate cut, and of course the umpteenth repackaging in 4KUHD soon. At some point I’ll pick up the DC BD since it can be had for nothing and at least be a demo title for equipment setups. I’m kind of curious to try it again after all this time, but the picture simply does not work.

The Clash Westway to the World: The best docu of the only band that matters. Still too brief for me and the only real draw is the band interviews which include Joe Strummer before his death.

and, for what it’s worth:

Back to the Future: The Ride

I wish more defunct simulator rides would be put on Blu Ray like this one has. Especially Disney’s original Star Tours (and the recently replaced Soarin’ Over California, though I don’t know what movie they’d pair it with).

At this point they could pair up original 80’s Star Tours with Captain Eo on Blu Ray, as George produced both.

I miss Honey I Shrunk the Audience. But that also ties into the Rick Moranis shaped hole in my heart.

The revival of Captain EO they replaced it with isn’t setup correctly and so the 3D effect is ruined.

I did read the comic several years back and enjoyed it quite a bit. I realize that I misworded that, I feel his style works well with the setting of the comic. It allows him to go all the way without making things too weird like he did with BvS

I really wish I could see the original silent version of this film. Unfortunately for me, aside from fan-edited versions which are even more intolerable, the only copy of I could find to watch on-line is the version with Ed McMahon’s expositionary narration, and watching that cut is like trying to appreciate a beautiful surrealist/expressionist painting that some schmuck scrawled needless explanatory notes all over in permanent marker.

Star Trek: Into Darkness

Star Trek '09 quite surprised me. I thought that this one would too. I had seen bits and pieces of it, but never had I watched all of it. Now I have (well, it’s not over yet, there’s only a few minutes left) and this movie is a disaster. The action and effects are quite good and the acting is fine, but the story is a broken mess of bad ideas and villain plans that make no sense. Also, what happened to Kirk’s arc in 2009? All that stuff about him becoming a responsible leader is thrown away in the first scene just because they needed cheap tension between him and Spock!

I’m pretty confident in Beyond. I have been since the moment where Kirk told the villain “I think you underestimate humanity” in Trailer 2.

Well, that was quite something. I only wish the character of Margaret Yang was more developed. Aside from that it was spectacular.

Zootopia- 6/10

Not very fun. Sloth scene was hilarious but I felt it forgot about being a good movie and spent more time beating you over the head with its political messages. Pixar films like Wall-E, Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Up etc. present touching and resonant messages without making things too political. I agree with some of the messages but the line where she gets called cute and she says “it’s ok for other bunnies to call me cute but not you” (something along those lines) goes too far. I think that’s actually a genuinely bad things to teach kids. Not very fun. My mother and I were so excited for this but it overall was dissapointing.

The first and only time I watched this movie was back in 2004, when I was still in high school. I didn’t appreciate it then; I wonder if I’d be able to now.

I’ve decided that I don’t quite hate this movie as much as I did yesterday. The performances are mostly very good and it feels like it tried to be a good political drama and tried to address the issue of whether Starfleet is a union of peaceful explorers or the Space-Navy (the line between the two is blurred sometimes in Trek). That said, it’s still a mess, and The Wrath of Khan retread-y bits (worst offender being the Kirk death scene, of course) still reek of a lack of confidence on the writer’s part.

Anyway, it’s definitely more enjoyable 3/4 TNG-era movies.

Thought that line was a pretty funny joke.

It’s sad that nowadays a movie with a message about being nice to others and treating people who are different with respect is seen as political.

And I don’t really get what you mean about “forgot about being a good movie.” It created a fun and complex world with interesting characters. The story was engaging, well structured, and with significant thematic depth. The dialogue and humor was clever and the actors were at the top of their game. It’s not my favorite movie but the makers certainly remembered to make sure it had all the things a “good movie” needs.

Glad you’re reevaluating even so soon after watching it. The film gets a very undeserved bad rap. Sure some of the plot devices are wonky but the film is so fun that it’s easy to forget and go along with the ride. The WOK retread talk gets blown out of proportion. Kirk’s death and Spock’s “KHAAAAAN!” are pretty much it when it comes to that. Really. What else is there (besides the mere presence of Khan)?

Anyway, it’s not nearly as memorable/charming/rewatchable as JJ and co.'s first effort but it’s still and enjoyable watch and significantly better than a number of other Trek films. Definitely not worth the hate.

I never understood why so many people liked the first Star Trek remake and then didn’t like (or hated) the second one. I get why people dislike both, or like both, but I don’t see how someone could really like one and then hate the other.

The Person in Question

The Starfleet officer who exceeds his authority, and crosses the line had been done to death in almost every Trek series, and the disaster porn at the end did not sit well with me.

That Peter Weller had already played an evil character who thought what he was doing was “right” on Enterprise didn’t help.

They only used Khan for the name recognition. Cumberbatch could have been playing just any old genetically superior madman. I saw nothing of the Khan that Kirk and company had a grudging admiration for in Space Seed , much to Spock’s puzzlement.

Of course, I know someone who isn’t that familiar with classic Trek, and has never seen TWOK, who thinks Into Darkness is great. 😉

Ah, quite titilating. YESIMADETHATJOKE!

“The Negotiator” (1998)

Samuel L Jackson shouts his way through a movie as only he can. Kevin Spacey is the hostage negotiator negotiating with a negotiator and he’s brilliant. Every actor in it is brilliant. It’s exciting, tense, witty, superbly shot, edited and scored.

I’ve seen it before and I was still on the edge of my seat. As far as I can tell the movie’s only misstep was not letting the audience in on the fact that Sam’s character didn’t kill Thin Hank Shraeder sooner. Other than that, flawless.

Also, if you go back and rewatch the beginning credits once you know who the bad guys are you can see that the photos are composed in a way that betrays their guilt through subtle body language and their physical placement with other characters.

Genius. A hugely impressive 4.75 oversized-air-vents out of 5.
