Star Wars works at all ages. Plus there’s a lot of nostalgia in it for folks like us, which facilitates it.

Anime doesn’t.

Why doesn’t it? Why do you have the right to say a film aimed at children just works for all ages because you grew up with it, but a vague generalized style of media is “just for teens” because you didn’t grow up liking it?

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

That they’re wrong and Frink’s still right

Yes because one wild generalization is wrong while the other one is accurate. The hypocrisy in this fanbase is absolutely staggering.

I’m pretty sure Frink was just making fun of grown men who watch Dragon Ball Z. Y’all need to adopt a sense of humor.

There’s more to anime than just DBZ. There is actual anime that is geared towards adults and adults pretty much exclusively. Also the entirety of this conversation isn’t just aimed at Frink.

Also, Dragon Ball (or any other comparable series) being aimed at teens makes it taboo to enjoy as an adult? I mean, people who treat Anime like religion need help, but, I’m positive that I’ll still enjoy Dragon Ball when I’m older. Same goes for One Piece, another series I like.

First of all, no one here is obligated to adopt an ignorant and primitive sense of humour.

As for anime, it has a vast range. There is literately anime for every age and every genre (even porn). Overall, most of anime is far better than most of American produced crap (films, TV series, cartoons, etc.).

I don’t know about that but they certainly have better game shows…

Of course there is! Porn makes up ninety percent of anime.

Why does a Japanese animation style equal “angsty teens”?

You will be able to answer that yourself once you’re all grown up.

You know what? I hate it when people act semi-racist towards Japan, just because “we need to eliminate the weeaboo’s!” or whatever. What is wrong with Japanese media? What is particularly great about Japanese media? Why do some people take Japanese media like religion, and why do others generalize and despise it for no good reason?

I can’t tell if this is addressed to me. I mean, it has nothing to do with what I said, but you quoted me, so…

I’m sorry to hear that. But just because you don’t think you’ll mature doesn’t mean all hope is lost. Chin up!

I dunno when “anime isn’t good” became “destroy all people who watch it/the Japanese”.

People who who think anime is just teen-dramas and hentsi should go watch Ghost in the Shell, or Akira, Mononoke, etc. etc. “Anime” simply refers to Japanese animation, it makes no more sense to generalise it as merely one or two genres than it is to claim that all American animation is Disney.

I tried to watch Ghost in the Shell once. Giant boobs in the very first scene. No thanks.

Akira was ok I guess. If you like violence porn.

I love Sushi!

But not that Japanese crap. I like American sushi. Eaten with a fork. And a Bud Light Lime.

I think I’ve fallen asleep during every one of the acclaimed Studio Ghibli films. So boring.

I think it would be cool if they went with a hyper-realistic CG approach, to tell the story of what went down in between VI and VII. Seeing how close to real life you can get in a video game, it shouldn’t be too difficult to make visually appealing entirely pre-rendered. All you’d need then are people who can do spot on impressions, which I’ve yet to see when it comes to this sort of thing.

Yeah the only decent part about TOR aside from the story content was the trailers they put out. I’d watch those as a feature-length.

Frink has stated his vague negative stance towards anime before, and the recent posts triggered a rant. Sorry 😛.

Did people forget about these adaptations already? I have the Dark Horse translation of Star Wars, and it was a pretty good adaptation.

Not sure if AOTC and ROTS were adapted though.

Where were you in '77?

And lest we forget, George spent some time in Japan. Some fans think he was taking notes from shows like Space Battleship Yamato, which reached American shores not too long after Star Wars as Star Blazers.

Well, it’s not exactly like Japan’s the only country that has shoehorned some nudity into otherwise critically-acclaimed movies. Once Upon a Time in America is an example that springs to mind, and they had less of an excuse than Ghost in the Shell.

Again, not exactly a purely Japanese cliche. Plus there’s far more to it than that.

But, fair enough, those two were somewhat bad examples.

A few examples of good anime films without nudity or excessive/exploitative violence;
Grave of the Fireflies
The Wind Rises
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
Spirited Away A bit cliche a choice, sure, but it’s more or less being treated as a Disney classic by now.

I haven’t really watched that many anime films, but those first two films are more than enough for me to respect Japanese animation, despite there being a lot of trash on the market as well (which, again, isn’t exactly that unusual for any film industry in the world).
