So ANH and TFA both start off in space, then they cut to our hero, then our earlier introduced characters end up meeting and needing them. So in order to make TPM mirror ANH more, wouldn’t it be better to introduce Anakin before the other characters meet him? I think it would make more sense, one idea is to show Anakin being forced into a podrace by Watto and barely losing to Sebulba. Rather than having one long three-lap podrace, you could introduce Anakin earlier, establish him as a good pliot and have two short and exciting podraces. What do you guys think?

If you could pull that off, that would be awesome.

I think I’m actually doing this in my edit, I’ll upload a clip soon.

If you were going to open on tatooine you could change how the characters get there, and their motives.

Qui Gon might be there alone already with the intention of recruiting Anakin.

Obi Wan might be on Coruscant already with his master Yoda.

The Naboo cruiser could blast through the blockade and land on Tatooine, where upon a chance meeting Padme pleads for help with Qui Gon, who initially doesn’t want to get involved.

Anakin could be the turning point, who only agrees to leave his family on Tatooine and train if Qui Gon agrees to help?

this sounds so much better than original

I just watched the seven samurai - so it was the closest to that I could think of to that, just with 5 less Jedi - especially as Qui-Gon dies.

Sounds infinitely more like ANH. Cool ideas!

An idea from ROGUE ONE I really enjoyed was that the DEATH STAR is powered by the same crystals used in the Lightsabers.

If you were to maintain that the concept of a superweapon powered by such crystals is the objective of the SEPARATISTS, then could the world’s they invade/conquer (so NABOO) be Kyber rich worlds? Perhaps even GEONOSIS is actually a superweapon in progress - much like STARKILLER base (which could also be re-explained in a VII edit as a forgotten other version).

Weird probably impossible idea, could C-3PO replace both TC-14 and JarJar in the Phantom Menace?

3PO belongs to the trade federation and greets Qui-Gon and Obi on the ship in the beginning (re colored and redubbed with an Anthony Daniels soundalike or Daniels’ voice clips from cartoons/radio dramas etc.)

Then he somehow accidentally stumbles onto one of the federation drop ships and winds up on the surface, saved by Qui-Gon instead of JarJar (would have to rotoscope out JarJar frame by frame and composite in new footage of an actor in 3PO costume). He accompanies them from then on, and his meet cute with R2 is moved earlier to the scene when Padme is cleaning R2 (3PO again replacing JarJar)

Could lead to some fun exchanges:

Qui-Gon:
You almost got us killed! Are you brainless?

C-3PO:
I’ll have you know, I’m fluent in over six million forms of-

Qui-Gon:
The ability to speak doesn’t make you intelligent. Now get out of here.

I’ve thought about replacing jar jar with 3po for some time now. I think it would work but would of course take a ton of work to pull off convincingly.

When Padme is in her queen garb and is talking in her “low formal voice” redub her with a different language that is subtitled. So essentially when she is the queen she only speaks in the “traditional Naboo dialect.” might be able to use this to change some of the politics of the TPM.

Not that this is a bad idea, but the redubbing has to stop somewhere, right? In OT, subtitles and other languages are used sparingly, but enough to immerse the viewer in the idea that this is an alien place. Now you’ve got the Neimoidians redubbed. And Jar Jar redubbed. And the Queen? Feels like a quarter of the film at that point would be making use of subtitles. Which would not be enjoyable.

Yeah I agree with that. But none the less it is still an option, especially considering she has much less dialog as the queen than jar jar. Also I think Jar Jar or the neimoidians could be redubbed with english speaking people and still be somewhat accurate with the mouth movements. But you do make a good point.

The whole ta’do about how the second Death Star got built so quickly could be solved by the Seperatists already making one by the end of ROTJ and the Republic making their own based on stolen plans.
The two could be confused in the chaos of the Galactic Empire rising so when the one in Rogue One got all blowed up the Empire just turned it’s attention to completing the other one.
Having Starkiller Base turn out to be Naboo would be a rather twisted way of turning the PT and the ST in on themselves.

I like it, but how do you get them from the forest to Theed? Either you skip Otoh Gunga, in which case there’s no way of introducing the Gungans for the film’s finale, or you need to make up some way that a protocol droid goes with them to an underwater city they might not even know about.

I suppose you could remove the gungans entirely.

3PO, being an interpreter, could potentially be made to have been to Otah Gunga many times to assist in political stuffs. The gungans can be made to speak another language. There would also be no need for subtitles in that case, because C3PO would just translate.

Surely the best solution would be to replace each Gungan with a 3PO protocol droid, including the army scenes.

I too had been tossing this idea around in my head for a while, not really as a fan-edit idea, but more of a “I wish Lucas had done this.” I don’t know if this is possible, but I’ll be damned if it shouldn’t be attempted.

Looking at my Art of The Phantom Menace, the Battledroids at one point were much taller than humans.

I wonder if it would be able to rescale the things to make them look more intimiating?
