Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers ** — Page 9

I’m surprised at the amount of play this is getting considered it isn’t official. Granted it certainly looks like the worst kept secret of the week.

Either way, I don’t see any reason to doubt the pick. He looks the part of an untrustworthy tough guy smuggler. I assume he has the chops or they wouldn’t have picked him.

I’m happy he’s not a copy of Ford. He needs to be Han Solo, not Harrison Ford. If he’s talented, and the writers are talented, and the director is talented, then I’ll be watching Han Solo. I don’t want to watch someone pretending to be Harrison Ford. Even better if this tangent film ends up as adult and gritty as Rogue One.

I like that they appear to be putting story and talent ahead of fan service. Color me optimistic.

Glad they didn’t just pick a lookalike to please the fanboys. Didn’t Harrison Ford say a while back (paraphrasing) that the new Han Solo needs to not be an impression?

That rules out Ingruber. He basically does Ford as a party trick. I’m happy they didn’t go that route, I had zero faith in his acting ability.

Harrison Ford is Han Solo. This isn’t another adaptation of some character from a novel. Han Solo’s character was invented by Ford’s performance. It’s not just fan service, it actually makes logical sense to cast someone who at least remotely resembles Harrison Ford.

The guy who played the younger version of Ford’s character in Age of Adeline would be my choice. I was amazed at how much like Ford he was, but he is kind of unknown and I don’t know how good an actor he is because his part was pretty minor. But he was a believable young Ford.

Alden Ehrenreich might very well be a great choice. Can’t say for sure. Based on what little I’ve seen of him, he’s definitely talented, but I wouldn’t immediately consider him for this role. Still, if he was cast, it’s not without a reason.

Pissing off the fanboys is a calculated risk though.

I haven’t followed the development of this film but that seems like a slight overreaction…

Calculated in that it’s not much of a risk. Fanboys will see it regardless.

In the end, the quality of the finished product is what will matter most. If Alden’s a good fit, no one will be complaining about snubbed Youtube impressionists when they leave the theater.

Was Ewan McGregor doing an Alec Guinness impression? Was River Phoenix doing a Harrison Ford impression?

And “youtube impressionist” ignores the fact Gruber played a younger version of Harrison Ford’s character in The Age Of Adeline, a feature film. The guy has a resume, so let’s call him an actor. Not saying he was the perfect choice, but the powers that be ought to have given him an audition.

If Alden doesn’t come across as Han Solo in the trailers, Lucasfilm will have a big problem on their hands.

Ingruber was the only correct choice, sorry. You can say now that they don’t want the new Solo doing an impression of ford, but any actor cast playing that character at nearly the same age will inevitably wind up doing so. And they completely passed up the one guy that could do more than just pull that off.

And yeah, McGregor was doing an impression of Alec Guniess, and even so his apprehension of doing an Obi Wan movie lies solely on the fact that Alec Guniess is that character at that point of the story.

I think it’s absurd to undermine his capability as an actor when he’s one of the only people in the business to have actually successfully played a young Harrison Ford in a movie.

I thought the late River Phoenix was a good young Indy. Having played Harrison’s son in The Mosquito Coast prior to making Last Crusade probably helped.

Nope and nope which is why they were great and why I’d be hesitant to cast someone with the credential of “does a great Harrison Ford impression.”

Sure, but who’s to say they didn’t?

Sure again but my point is that just because he doesn’t look and sound exactly like HF doesn’t mean he can’t still be Han Solo.

Not only did Ewan sound like Obi-Wan he looked like him too. It was perfect casting all across the board. This new Han Solo guy…not so much. He would be better off being Han’s half brother.

You honestly think the guy from Trainspotting looks and sounds like Alec Guinness?

Listen to Ewan in the scene where he talks to Boss Nass and it’s pretty clear he’s taking more than a page from Guiness’ mannerisms and speech patterns. He even requested Lucas compile every scene of Obi Wan on a tape that he watched almost every day before shooting.

If you’re trying to cast a character played by a single actor, the biggest reference you should be going by is how that actor looked and preformed. Otherwise it obscures and lessens the importance of that original performance and the character becomes less defined for the worse.

But in any case it’s better to just wait and see how things turn out when the movie actually goes into production.

Jedit: Also I guess you haven’t watched the bonus feature where they literally boast about how cool it is that Ewan is so much like Alec in appearance and presence.

The one thing that impressed me about the prequels was that I believed Ewan as a young Obi Wan.

Even though 1987’s Dragnet was a riff on the old tv show, Dan Ackroyd was constantly listening to tapes of the radio episodes on his walkman to get his Joe Friday as close to Jack Webb’s as possible.

I don’t quite get why so many people are up in arms over this casting choice. I’m still totally skeptical of this movie, but this actor does not worsen the skepticism at all. I’m sure he’ll be fine, I’m sure the movie will be fine, but it’s just something that the idea of feels… wrong. Han’s arc is now so perfectly complete, I almost don’t want this movie to exist at all. Maybe I’ll lighten up in the next couple years before it’s out.

I could give a twirly fuck what other movie he was in. Here’s a fused photo of the two

and even if you look up any photo of Obi-Wan from ROTS it’s almost uncanny how much he resembles a what an young Obi-Wan would look like.

I’m willing to drop the “YouTube” part, but that performance was just as much an impression.
