Buckaroo Banzai certainly isn’t so bad it’s good it’s just something that should be fun and is quirky and full of ideas but just doesn’t work for reasons which aren’t really easy to define.

It’s almost like the product of an alien culture where the points of reference are unknown so nothing it attempts to do really clicks.

If you sat down and tried to describe it to someone the film in their head particularly with that cast would be much better than the actual film.

I liked the movie for exactly the reason you seem to dislike it. I think it is intended as a huge inside joke. It’s not meant for you or me, or anyone in particular for that matter. It’s a middle finger to people who demand that entertainment be instantly relatable or even understood at all.

Nothing exemplifies this more than the watermelon scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpVXpCNFOSg

There is no in-movie payoff for this exchange, only weirdness. You have to do some outside research to figure out the backstory of this strain of high velocity fruit, but when you do, it’s oddly gratifying. There IS a logic to parts of the movie, even if much of it defies easy characterization.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I just saw it on Netflix, then I thought, wow I feel like shit I think it’s a platoon night.

I’ll watch it eventually, when I can figure out which one I should.

I am not lost. I know exactly where I am, I am in some shitty fucking hell, which is exactly what I deserve. But you… YOU are lost. All my life I thought that I needed you, that I couldn’t survive without you, fuck! Fuck! It was the other fucking way around. It was the other way around.

Yeah I’ve considered watching it on netflix but am cautious. Are the other versions so significantly better to make this unworthwhile?

I hated the theatrical version, but that may be due to the channel I watched it on than any major inherent problems within the movie itself. They kept cutting to commercials in the very middle of scenes, and I’m almost certain they edited it down for length.

I hate theatrical version because of the crappy ending scene that does not fit into the film atmosphere at all.

The one problem I have with the final cut is the changes it makes to the Tyrell-Roy scene particularly what he says to Tyrell and later J F.

In the earlier versions of the scene he is fired up, barely repressing his rage until the final resolution where it explodes.

In the final cut what he does to J F doesn’t fit what he is saying to him and the F-bomb is sorely missed.

I can see why it was done, to foreshadow the final scenes, but it mucked up a pivotal scene for me.

If you’re going to go to the trouble of getting a hold of a specific version (recommended), watch the Director’s Cut. The only thing holding back the theatrical is the ending (and possibly the narration).

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

I’ve so far only watched the Theatrical Cut. It’s good, but I feel like the other cuts are probably much better. I didn’t mind the narration. It wasn’t good but I didn’t cringe or anything. The “happy ending” of the TC, however, is garbage.

I’ve got some money stored up on old gift cards and I might use it on the 3 disc set of all the versions. Still debating this.

Out of curiosity…why do you hate the Breakfast Club?

…Miracle Mile (1989)…

*shudder*

It’s a great film. (Sounds better with a comedy Italian accent)

Miracle Mile? Great? I’ve hated how stupid that movie is since the first time I saw it. If only he didn’t jump out the back of that van…

Throw Momma From The Train?

You just lost your right to recommend anything.

Most of Hal Hartley’s films are from the eighties and early nineties. I discovered them late but I enjoy them but if Miracle Mile is your idea of torture you probably won’t like them. Sort of like David Lynch but with all the dream inspired weirdness turned down to barely registerable.

God, how I love your organization. Thank you, I’ve seen a lot of these and had forgotten about them, especially some that I really enjoyed. The Burbs, Serpent and the Rainbow, Shocker, The Gate, and LOVED LOVED LOVED Psycho II. I had a bit of a crush on Anthony Perkins, what a nerd.

Thanks so much, I will look into more of the ones you mentioned.
