Help: looking for... Episode II and III extended soundtracks request for leitmotiv project

(English is not my mother tongue, sorry for the mistakes)

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working on a weird personal project: extracting the totality of leitmotivs heard in the two trilogies’ music, in order to count, analyse and classify these leitmotivs. Ultimately, when it’s done, I’ll make several videos about John Williams’ use of leitmotivs and put them on Youtube. I’m totally aware that very few people will be interested by this, but one must follow his feelings!

The usefulness of this project is of course debatable, however the best classification of leitmotivs in Star Wars that has been done so far (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Musical_score) is good but incomplete. Several leitmotivs are lacking, there is no classification of them according to their importance (the number of times you hear them), and there are some refinements, subtleties and easter eggs in Williams’ use of leitmotivs that are so far unexplored.

Anyway, my life is not a relevant topic. I’m posting this because, now that I’ve done the original trilogy and episode I, I’m stuck by the lack of a commercial extended soundtrack for episodes II and III, i.e. the actual movie score, not a shortened concert version.

Some of you have compiled such extended sountracks for episodes II and III, digging the music out of video-games and blu-ray tracks. I’ve sent private messages, but without success.

It’s also more or less available on Youtube, but with an inadequate sound quality, and some tracks are missing or not downloadable. Also, very sadly, I’m not very competent with the torrent & co world.

I would be immensely pleased and motivated if this lovely community could help me retrieve those extended soundtracks and finish my work.

I was kindly given a superb expanded version of Episode II’s sountrack by a forumer, which will keep occupied for one or two months.

I now only lack Episode III. If someone knows somebody who has compiled an expanded soundtrack for episode III, I would be very happy to get the information.

A guy mixed a few unreleased queues from several sources but some of them still have sound effects in them, here’s his playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nYxLzlt4vQ&list=PL0dqWRYwKNGdnCpOqJsKcSWc5nJYgbY3A

Thank you for your concern, that’s sweet.

I already knew about this version though, it was my fall back plan. Fortunately, I was sent a more complete original soundtrack by another forumer, who had compiled it himself.

I was very surprised and happy to be given this, I was doubtful whether somebody had actually managed to compile a complete original soundtrack for ROTS. It appears I was wrong.

Now I won’t have any valid excuse for not completing my project :p

Where would this extended Ep II score be kept?

EDIT: And Ep III.

Not enough people read the EU.

Hi, I’m working on a project using many of the occurrences of Across the Stars in Episodes II & III. Could I please get the link to the expanded soundtrack of Episode II?

Thank you!

Could somebody please PM me the Episode II OST link?

It’s funny how PMs only seem to work in one direction around here.

I was listening to some ‘complete’ episode 2 and 3 soundtracks on youtube last night and heard a leitmotif of Across the Stars that I hadn’t heard before, which I quite like. It’s a bit more complicated than the usual version, but I’m not quite sure whether it was in Episode 2 or 3.

It’s rather awkward to admit this because I’ve listened to much of the soundtrack again as well as some others, but I can’t seem to find it again. It’s driving me a bit batty. I’ll keep listening, but does anyone here know what leitmotif I’m talking about? I think it was to mark a scene change, though I could be wrong.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I’m afraid all “complete” soundtracks are slightly different (music was recorded several times with slightly edited scores), that’s why I only use them when they match exactly the actual film music when working on my leitmotif project. Therefore, I have no idea what exact scene and track you could be talking about.

I also haven’t finished episode II yet (far from it), so I can’t give you all the “across the stars” appearances.

Sorry to be of no help 😦

I’d appreciate a PM for both of these if possible…thanks!

Would it be possible for me to also receive a link to the Attack of the Clones soundtrack? None of the one’s I’ve heard have been movie accurate.

You actually hear the theme twice :

  • At 0:24 played by (I think) the G flute (alto flute). It is indeed lovely because of the violin “contrechant” ("Counter-melody in English ?).

  • At 3:26 played by the French Horn.

Also notice the force theme (played by the bass clarinet I would say) at 4:58. Lovely too 😃

I realize this is an old post, but in case you are still interested, I did actually make an Excel spreadsheet of all the instances of various leitmotifs and themes (that I could detect!) a while back. It lists the track and time index where each theme is heard (using the SE releases for the OT, the UE for TPM, and the OSTs for II and III), or the time index in the movie for material that hasn’t been officially released on CD. If it’s of any interest, you can find it here: http://hep.bu.edu/~slinden/Themes_OST.xls

It is indeed an old post, but I’m still here!

I’ve downloaded your spreadsheet, congratulations for this work! It is of immense interest to me. Thanks a lot.

I was convinced that other fans would have done that prior to me, and am very happy to be able to compare my works with yours (though mine isn’t finished). I’m impressed by the fact that you’ve detected a lot more leitmotivs than most people, and took note of many subtleties. Your work is incomparably more exhaustive that anything I’ve seen.

This will definitively help me and give me motivation. Sadly, since I’ve started this topic, my project has barely moved forward while my free time was disappearing under a pile of nappies, baby bottles and other mundane time-killers 😦

I’m confident I’ll finish this someday though :p

Glad this is still of interest to you! Incidentally, I realized that the spreadsheet I had uploaded there was a slightly older version; I’ve put the correct one there now: http://hep.bu.edu/~slinden/Themes_OST.xls

If and when you do move forward with this project, I’d be very interested to see what you come up with!
