Get ready for "Star Wars - Shroud of the Sith", a radical fan edit of "The Phantom Menace" — Page 3

You can also use this scene from Ep. 2 when Dooku’s ship arrives and he has a brief conversation with Palaptine (as Sidious) as they walk out of frame…you can possibly make this the opening scene (starts from space, which works perfectly). That way, we only see Dooku in the beginning of the movie and then the very end… so instead of a “who the hell was that?” feeling at the end, we’ll already know who he is that they are up to something behind the scenes.

That’s what happens if you’re unhappy with the current selection, and you’ve got some time to kill.

This definitely.

I’ll be on the lookout. But I’m up for suggestions.

Actually, I just watched your latest test and its perfect. Literally perfect.

Awesome!

I still think I’m going to touch up on the blending of Dooku against that background, but I’m pretty happy with the structuring of the scene as is. Glad you like it!

A Jedi council scene might include a rotoscoped clip from when Dooku sighs after slicing up Ani, probably best inserted when Qui Gin gets shut down about training Anakin. It’s a close-up if I recall and could show him sitting in a chair, thus furthering the implication of his feelings for Qui Gon and dissatisfaction with the Council.

I was going to mention that but you said you were going to work on that anyway.

Is that a deleted scene? It’s been a minute since I’ve seen Episode II, but I don’t remember that bit.

That sounds like a great idea. I’ll go check that scene out and see what I can do with it.

I believe it happened towards the end of the movie - i honestly don’t recall because i really only watch prequel fanedits nowadays… haven’t watched the original in forever lol Nevertheless, it would be a great way to incorporate more Dooku into your edit.

It’s toward the end of the movie. If I remember correctly its the scene just before the “begun the clone war has” scene.

It directly follows the Dooku/Yoda fight, after he escapes. You can see it in that video. It shows the wipe.

SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.

Dooku should definitely be put into the Jedi Council scenes. It will definitely add to the funeral scene

No offense, kid, but I don’t think you know how to boil water.

Also, here’s the first trailer for this edit.

https://youtu.be/ss-LLNkdWpk

It’s basically structured like the Force Awakens trailer. I tried to include clips from most of the various atmospheres in this edit, to give you an idea of what everything will look like. There’s also a preview of a potential voice for Jar Jar. In this trailer, he’s speaking English, but I’m not 100% sure if I want to keep this voice or give him an alien dub with subtitles.

The main issue with Jar Jar speaking English is syncing the new dialogue to his lip movements. The alternative is reading subtitles throughout the whole thing, which can be a bit monotonous. I’m also considering the idea of having Jar Jar speaking in an alien language, but gradually improving on his English throughout the film (which would help explain his appointment to the Senate in later films, if he’s the only Gungan who can speak English).

Let me know what you guys think. I really like his voice in the scene in the trailer, but it’s more difficult to implement in other scenes with a greater change in his dialogue.

I’m also just realizing that I encoded the wrong file. The version in that trailer is about two steps (of going back through and touching up on things) behind the final version. I’m now encoding the correct file.

If you dub Jar-Jar in english then I think this would be the very first edit to actually do that, if you are going for an alien language then I have some pointers:
-Keep subtitles to a minimum, in the OT the aliens only have subtitles when absolutely necessary in order to prevent the audience constantly reading the screen.
-Do not reverse your dialog, it’s a cheap way to make your alien voice but it is very obvious and doesn’t sound right.
-Match up the lines to the character’s lips, this is very important

Anyway, nice trailer!

Thanks! Yea, I really want to try and make English Jar Jar work, as I already have the Neimoidians subtitled. I might upload a clip of them speaking tonight, to give everyone an idea of what to expect. The voices abide by the all of the tips you’ve mentioned. I personally can’t stand reversed dialogue.

Nope! I showed a rough cut of my Jar Jar re-dub to this discussion a couple of weeks ago. If you want to see it, here it is: https://vimeo.com/152045806 (password is wetlands)

Cool stuff, obviously very rough but I’m down for an Irish smartass Gungan, you may actually be able to make him funny!

And to address the notion of Dooku appearing out of nowhere…honestly, I think that’s part of his problem in Episode II anyway. He’s a villain that shows up out of nowhere and gives an expositional speech as to why he’s the new villain. I feel like if I can find a conceivable way to introduce him into Episode I, he’ll at least be a familiar face in II and we’ll have some notion of who he is. Actually, as I’m typing this out, I’m thinking showing him in the council would work really well. I’ll see what I can do.

In the beginning of the movie when Obi and QGJ are aboard the federation ship, Obi says “master Yoda said I should be mindful of the future.” Would it add anything to have him say master dooku? I think this change be used as foreshadowing for what about to happen over the next two movies between him and Obi? Plus, of course, we hear the name dooku early which helps establish continuity for his character.

I think that would be fairly easy to do actually, you just have to find Obi-Wan saying it in the right tone.
