My copy is an original (it came with the '92 letterbox box set with the hologram), but it isn't sealed. Nevertheless, if it would prove useful, I'd be glad to lend it out provided it was returned.

I have the same copy, but sealed.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

I'm currently capturing my pal laserdisc version.  Now that I'm looking through it, it seems they sporadically decided to add subtitles here and there.  Mostly, they pop up during stock video footage from the movies but occasionally parts of the documentary are also subtitled unfortunately.  The quality seems quite good though but I won't know until the capture is finished if there are blended fields or if progressive frames can be restored.  In any case, I'll post the raw file (no audio) to usenet probably this weekend for others to analyze.

Thanks! ld-decode or 750?

For the moment I've captured it S315 -> 750.  I can capture it with ld-decode later if it proves to be worthwhile.  If the current capture is just for evaluation does anybody have a problem with a good quality x264 encode to save time and bandwidth?

No issue here. Can you hold on to the raw if we decide it's good as-is? Also, can you upload 3 consecutive raw shots (preferably ones with high contrast transitions, such as red to white)? I want to see how well the PAL 3DCF in the 750 handles shot changes.

Thanks!

It seems like I was able to recover progressive frames entirely so I went ahead and did that. It's encoding to x264 now and I'll up it sometime tonight.

EDIT: I'll hold on to the raw capture for sure but it might be awhile before I get around to testing the pal 3dcf on the 750 since I'd like to finish ld-decoding the laserdiscs that only have analog audio first.  When I do though I'll post it in your comb filter thread.

Ok it should be available soon (posting now).  Please let me know what you think. I really don't know much about this other than I watched it on tv as a kid and now it's hard to find.

I did a pal->ntsc video->film conversion and the running time is 65 minutes as stated on the internet so I think it all should be there.  The resolution is still 720x576 though.

Nope. Here's the script I used. I used qtgmc because there was still some interlacing present, but the frames were progressive as far as I could tell. So yeah, I guess I meant pal -> film conversion instead of pal->video->film.

AVISource("E:\captures\fswtj-pal.avi")

assumetff()

separatefields()

trim(1,0)

weave()

assumefps ("ntsc_film")

converttoyv12()

qtgmc(preset="fast")

selecteven()

AFAIR, the PAL version quality is lower than the Japanese LD... and, to wipe out subtitles, a PAL VHS tape is needed!

@AntcuFaalb: don't know if Jetrell will be able to capture the NTSC tape lossless; if not, would you (*gulp*) dare to open your own brand new unopened unshrinkwrapped tape, and capture it lossless?

I just checked ebay and there are a few from the UK right now.  I'll put a bid on one but I don't actually have a vhs deck anymore.  I might be able to borrow one though.

At the end, if all will go well, we'll get both PAL and NTSC captures that, combined with their respective VHS counterparts, will be without subtitles!

Is the LD from a true PAL master though, and not a conversion from NTSC?

This ld-decode, can anyone test this out?  Is it actual software or just a script for AVIsynth which I have NO good clue about using, LOL?

happycube (the author) and althor1138 both have working ld-decode setups. It's a standalone program, not an Avisynth script. It also requires special capturing hardware and an LD player mod at this point in time.

Thanks for the clarification Ant .....  Most appreciated.

 I'm not sure.  This one seems a bit dark to me but it has more detail and less blown-out whites than the official youtube version.

It might be since all I had to do was drop the fps from 25 to 23.976 to achieve progressive frames with the correct running time.

I have a DVD I made of the PAL Star Wars to Jedi VHS, using a Panasonic E50 recorder on the top quality recording mode. The quality is pretty good (for VHS!), though the image is quite dark. If it's of any use I could send off a copy.

Sorry for the dark text above - ipads and this forum do not work together well :/ That was just cut and pasting text from the Notes app.

Yes, please up it somewhere. If the LD and VHS line up pretty good the subtitles might be pretty easy to erase.

With our internet connection that wouldn't be possible I'm afraid. Willing to send it out though if somrbody can make use of it.

So hey!

A copy of “From Star Wars To Jedi” NTSC “sourced from a mid-80’s HBO broadcast. Transferred from an old VHS tape acquired from an estate sale” was posted to the Spleen on June 14, 2015 by 6stringer (additionally, a few months ago mumbles posted to the same thread saying that he has a retail copy ALSO on VHS)…

I made a post there AND I am making this post here just to try and see if this preservation effort MIGHT (hopefully) reasonably be set back into motion? (BECAUSE that would be REALLY cool.)

Well, that’s all I’ve got for now… 😉

Kind regards,

-A.S.

I have a 16mm print of “From Star Wars To Jedi” that I might be willing to sell for the right price if anyone is interested?
