Hello everyone, I just thought I’d make a post here letting the OriginalTrilogy.com community know that I’ve made an HD* conversion of the classic documentary “From Star Wars to Jedi The Making of a Saga” using Harmy’s Despecialized Editions.

you can see it here now:https://youtu.be/eUczUdIYMyM
(the video is unlisted at the moment, so the link is the only way to view it)

*only the clips from the 3 movies are in HD, the interviews exc. have all been upscaled from an SD VHS rip.

EDIT: The video is now public.

Awesome idea and from what I have seen (some minutes so far) it has been well executed. Will definitely come back to watch the full thing.

Darth Id on ‘Why “Ben”?’:

And while we’re at it, we need to figure out why they kept calling Mark Hamill’s character “Luke Skywalker,” since it’s my subjective opinion that his name is actually Schnarzle Shnuzzle.  It just doesn’t make sense!

Damn you George Lucas for never explaining why they all keep calling Schnarzle “Luke”!

Damn You!!!

Looks really cool, I’ll have to find time and watch the whole thing too. Though, I would be less distracted during the SD parts if they just had regular black pillar-boxing, rather than what’s on there now.

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

I agree with this. If someone wants to go a step further, they could use the Japanese Laserdisc of FSWTJ for the SD portions and use the VHS to remove the subs.

there are many jumps and the audio isn´t partly sync.

The sync was done on a shot by shot basis. I matched the cuts from the VHS down to the frame, so if it looks wrong in the video it looked wrong on the VHS.

the jumps never from the vhs…it looks like frames are missing.

i watched it and it looks good. do you have clean up or color correction done?
i think it could use a bit more colors and black and a bit less brightness.
do you make this with the other 3 making of?
isn´t in the empire of dreams dvd stuff you can use for higher quality?
and will you do this with the sta wars holiday special too? 😃

Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Yeah I did do some color correction on the SD footage, mostly balance stuff though. I’m sure the SD portions could look better (As Wazzles said you could probably get a cleaner rip if you could get a hold of the Japanese LD), but it looks better than it did when I started. Ex: The shot of Sy Snootles on a production monitor at 16:54 looked like a screen in a sea of gray before I got to it. And no I’m probably not going to restore the Holiday Special because that would require watching that mess. 😛

On that note, there may be some things in the Special Edition making of featurette from the Laserdisc that could fill in for some of it.

Would the version on the Star Wars YT channel be of any use?

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

Their version does look cleaner than other versions I’ve seen, but it would need to be combined with another source to be used on account of their version being annoyingly cropped from the top and bottom.

bphil Ive just finished watching your HD version of this and must say top marks on the conversion.
I initially had syncing issues while streaming via youtube but after downloading and playing it had no problems at all.

Job well done bphil :]

I see I’m not the first to offer you more work, but taking that Star Wars YT channel video and putting it over yours (if those 2 videos are mutually stable), it might be a very easy fix on your timeline editing (only needed to be clicked-visible for the documentary-filmed sections).

Here, I took your original [top], non-uniformally resized and lined up the YouTube one with it (cut-out with a fade-away edge) [center], and contrasted & saturated the YT for best match (bottom).
Actually, you might do better to color-correct the YT first and then adjust your original to match that.

The image-detail improvement is easily visible even in this 70% reduction.

Wow! So I guess bphil won’t be let off-the-hook too easily.

As with other Star Wars laserdiscs, does “From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga”, too, have preferred (“better” or “least problematic”) pressings? And there’s always the NTSC/PAL normalization factor.

Well, Star Trek (TOS) Remastered had a version that “slipped out” through Netflix and other pay-for-view outlets. That version was from the master for creating either pillar-box or vertical-cropped-widescreen editions:
Naked Time opening - ws shot mixed with standard shot (.mov)
Would that changing-aspect-ratios look better than the present “TV news widescreen-filler” look? Or are there other options for the widescreen filler?

This is the one I have. I can’t recall any issues with it.

There was a second pressing, but it was part of the Japanese Definitive Collection boxset, and probably harder to come by.

No idea if it was actually remastered though.

As for the pillarbox issue, maybe a dark starry background could work? Dragonball Z Kai episodes air on Toonami windoboxed this way.

There must a be a good high res image of a Star Wars starfield out there.

This is the one with the From Star Wars to Jedi laserdisc included. The only difference, I believe, is the inclusion of digital audio.

The second release of the Japanese DC had the “making of trilogy” discs. I don’t own this yet but am on the lookout for it. I just refuse to pay over 100 dollars for laserdiscs at this point. Someday I’ll find one.

Oh, God no! Not that!
People, think of it this way:
What does the letter-boxing on the DeEd segments look like? Solid Black Bars. Why does the 4:3 pillar-boxing need to be presented differently to fit 16:9. It’s practically the same thing, just on the other sides.
