It says “extended” on the spine because their runtimes are longer than Q2’s (for whose edits I have a similar-looking one.) I’m going to include an insert with the features and cutlist info.

I made it yellow because: A) the background on the “official” 9000 series covers is yellow; 2) I wanted to put the battle droid from said covers (or rather from the disc art) on the back; and d) I didn’t want to make the cover green.

Growing up with the OT, I think there was this impression of green sabers being better than blue, since Luke had a blue saber first and a green one later when he was more powerful. And since the OT cover is blue, I didn’t feel proper making the PT cover green (Q2’s is red, though).
…Plus, there are Jedi in Ep2 with gold/yellow sabers.

NOTE: Much of this cover was taken directly from Video Collector’s covers. He said when he allowed me to have his covers that they were for my use and that I couldn’t directly distribute them.

Great (?) news! V4 of Labyrinth Of Evil exists now, and should be appearing in the normal places within a day or so. Those with Myspleen accounts will probably get it before FanEdit.info does.

The Approaching Storm will be next. This long project of mine is finally coming to a close.

Video Collector says I can share my versions of his covers at my own discretion.

So, here you go.

Hey Hal,

Thanks a lot for sharing with us this edit of ROTS which is, to my taste, the best I’ve seen (I think I’ve already said so earlier in the thread when I saw V3)!

I’ve just downloaded V4 of LOE and I launched the file; and (I’m sorry for this) I’m gonna have to be a little picky. The starfield at the beginning of the movie shows (although it’s not very conspicuous) the end of the (original?) crawl (I guess you made a snapshot from the movie to get a clean frame of the starfield).

I don’t want to come off as ungrateful or anything by pointing this out, as I absolutely love what you did with the movie! But as I said it doesn’t show a lot, so it’s not the end of the world at all (I’m excited to be able to watch the final version of a an edit that I love!) 😄

Thank you for what you did!

Just kidding. But yeah, that’s unfortunate. I really had to look for a minute before spotting it. Watching the edit, I honestly can only notice it if I stand and look down on my monitor. (And I cannot for the life of me spot it at all on my MacBook’s built-in screen.) I would never have spotted that in a million years.

Well I guess my laptop screen is not contrasty enough, so it really is a minor, minor thing.

It doesn’t keep me from enjoying the edit, it’s like rediscovering the movie all over again 😄 You did well Hal(akin?). It was too mediocre to be kept like that :3

Thank you for that, I really do appreciate it. The edit is out the door, so I’m not going to fix this issue. V4’s it! I don’t doubt many tiny imperfections like this may occur to me in time, but I’ve got to consider this “finished” at some point. 😛

Oh I know, I never meant for my comment to sound like "well go and change it and re-render it and re-upload it and tell the people that they have to download all over again the same thing because of one more tiny fix they won’t even notice" 😄

I happen to do some filming/editing myself (as a hobby) and I know what you mean, that at some point it has to be over (I’ve already revisited 3 or 4 times a shortfilm I made years ago, but now it’s done and I’ll never go back to it) 😛

Thank you for your dedication 😃

I’m staring very closely at my phone from various angles, and I can’t see what you circled there. Only stars.

Well my screen’s a bit shitty when it comes to contrasts, it’s better that you don’t see anything. I don’t wanna ruin anything by pointing out this small detail (because it is one) :3

On another note, the upscale of the deleted scenes looks really good, and they fit very nicely into the movie’s narrative. And I really liked that Hal trimmed little bits here and there, it helps tighten the pacing (and removes stupid stuff).

I’ve watched the first half hour: it’s great. I’m impressed by the video quality of the deleted sequence (seed of rebellion). Contrary to your edits of EI and EII know I don’t agree on many things (all the ending especially, even if I do like some ideas like Qui-Gon voice), but it’s a very professional editing work, which improves greatly a “not so bad” movie (my perfect edit would mix yours with scenes from L8 version). I’m really looking forward to seeing your v4 of APPROACHING STORM, I really don’t like ATTACK OF THE CLONES but your v3 edit was very watchable.

What software do you use to burn blu ray discs of Hal’s trilogy ? I’m looking for one that would work on PC (I don’t have a Mac), with the possibility to add menu and bonus material.

I do not have Bluray menus for these. Rest assured that /if I did/, I would have put them on the spleen.

I use tsMuxer to mux the mkvs to Bluray folders; I use ImgBurn to burn discs. If you buy blank discs, buy Verbatim. Verbatim consistently uses quality manufacturers to make their blank media.

I’ve used software to make DVD menus before, for a wholly unrelated family project, but I’m not sure it could make Bluray menus.

… Okay, you’ve got me intrigued. I’ll look into what software might be best to use.

JEDIT: Cursory searches for Bluray menu software, even searching this site, indicate multiAVCHD is the best free software, and Adobe Encore is the best paid software for creating Bluray menus. The DVD menu software I had used previously was DVD Styler, which doesn’t make Bluray menus.

Similarly, for ripping movie discs I use MakeMKV; for re-encoding to a reasonable size I use Handbrake with the AppleTV 3 preset, and Video Quality set to 19 for DVD content and 21 for AVCHD/Bluray.

I use MakeMKV because it is fairly easy to use, it rips both DVDs and Blurays, and it’s currently free. I use Handbrake because everyone and their dog whom you ask says that it’s the best for reencoding video files.

Did you upscale the deleted scenes yourself? They look really good!

I only had to do them myself for Ep2; Ep1 and Ep3 were done by DrDre. I was pretty impressed with how they look too!

JEDIT: And once the dust settles, I do still plan on syncing the audio to them and releasing the upscaled deleted scenes along with any odds and ends that others might find useful.

Okay, wait. I watched v4 first with the editor commentary, and when I got to the Vader scream I was totally looking forward to hearing the Russian scream. But I heard a NOOO!! instead… Wait, what?!? Okay, so I rewound and switched audio tracks. Yeah, it’s there in track 1. So why is there a 2nd non-commentary track? Oh, because Russian is in track 1 but English is in track 2. Hmm. I must not have been paying attention in the thread or something. I didn’t know you’d include both versions. That’s not a complaint, though.

But then… you took out Coruscant at the end. Poop.

Imgur

Anyway, my only real qualm is that in the editor commentary for LOE you complain and poke fun at the story, in a way that suggests you don’t enjoy the film that much but instead sort of begrudgingly tolerate it. It detracts somewhat from the fun of watching, I feel, when meanwhile you’re hearing someone frequently complaining about it.

Fantastic edit(s) though. Very good indeed.

(The commentary track was finished before deciding to go with the Russian scream.)

Yeah, I thought the commentary for Ep3 was more negative than the others. I did it after hitting some cider. I had also just reread the novelization, and so had a fresh sense of disappointment in how the film was executed. In fairness, ROTS leaves many things to complain about.

I don’t know, man. The prequels are like aggravating family members. Someone doing what I’ve done has to see the good in them. A conflict.
