team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released) — Page 108

I don’t know if it’s just me, but the font in the Team Negative 1 logo and the disclaimer have some serious aliasing. Nothing that takes away from the release itself, just something that I notice and bothers me probably more than anyone else.

It’s also curious to see how much more orange the crawl and logo are than in any home video release. Is this intentional or a by-product of being from the Eastman print?

The list below should be right. The frame-numbers are based on the GOUT after it has been demuxed with PGCDemux and run through DGIndex with forced film selected (in other words, post-IVTC). Althor, would you mind checking them?

42593-604 (inclusive)

86658-715 (inclusive)
113650-5 (inclusive)
144051-5 (inclusive)

That’s pretty spot on. I added one frame for the trash compactor scene because the one that is existing got messed up in the cleaning process or something. I also added the frames missing from the end just in the interest of conformity. If we want cross-compatibility between projects then this should be included I think.

Thanks! I was going to ask if you had included the five frames at the end in your reckoning. The total is 106 excluding those. I agree that 113649 is messed up but counted it as present, but I’ll add it to what I send to poita.

I’ve been a long time reader here, especially following Team Negative1 and Harmy’s projects, but have never posted. I just wanted to add to the chorus of gratitude to Team Negative1 for their talent and dedication. To put it in the simplest terms, your work makes me happy. Thank you!

Also, I realize an .iso is coming but, for anyone planning to author the Star Wars “Silver Screen Edition” mkv for burning to BDR, I came up with the Chapter List below. Just copy and paste into tsMuxerGUI:

Thanks, I’m a long way from well, but am back home.
Anyway, I’ll stop clogging up the -1 thread with other stuff😃

I’m watching the last reel of the neg1 release now, hopefully will throw it up onto the projector tonight and get a good look at it, but couldn’t wait, so have been watching it on the laptop which is less than ideal, but still fun to see it, and will get a chance to look for those frames later in the week. Quite probably some of them are missing from all prints and only exist now on the LDs, especially the last frames at reel changes.

I want to start off by saying I am in awe at what the “preservationists” and “re-editors” have accomplished with the Original Trilogy. I am a layman at best, regarding the work involved and honestly Team Negative’s work is not that familiar to me. The ADYWAN and HARMY work is what I’ve kept up with. It was a surprise when I saw the notification that there was a new version of A New Hope by Team Neg. just released and I wasted no time in acquiring it. I watched the beginning of the film until the last scene with Vader on the Tantive IV and really liked what I saw. I then started to read a few negative reviews from some people regarding the amount of grain seen throughout the film, so last night I decided to continue watching the download on my computer and found I was in agreement regarding the graininess of the image. Quite frankly my memory can’t recall the picture quality of the film when I saw it in 1977, but to some this might be the correct way the movie should look, but to me I’d prefer a cleaner print as exhibited in the Harmy versions. No insults to Team Negative and their hard work.

Glad you are home poita 😃.

The list of missing frames comes from comparing against the 2006 bonus disc so at worst, the frames are available on the blu-ray or 2006 bonus disc. I guess it’s just a question of how hard it would be to blend them in.

EDIT: To the people who don’t like grain here’s a LPT. If you start looking at the grain that’s all you are going to see. Try to just watch the movie. The grain is actually a good thing imo.

I love film grain. I love to look at the film grain. When I see a release where I can’t see the grain variation on the image, I just can’t stand it. Sadly, that’s like, most official BDs of most of the movies that I like (besides the big 4k restoration jobs such as Good Bad Ugly, Terminator etc.), but, that’s what the majority buyer wants, crystal clean image with no grain whatsoever.

Regarding grain. It’s mostly a personal preference.

Some notes, you may have read in the FAQ:

  1. Harmys version, and Bluray are clearer - Yes

But they never appeared like that in the theater. Release prints were never one generation away from the Negative, so they would never appear that clear, even day one.

2 What if it was a Technicolor print

Then the colors would be closer, but then it still wouldn’t look as sharp. Technicolor prints were only shown in the UK mostly (there are some German, and other ones out there), and that was in 1978. They wear down like other prints when it comes to damage, and usage.

3 What about this LPP

This wasn’t show in a Spanish theater either, from what we gather. It might have been a copy made for a movie collector, or shown on Spanish Television.

4 Future projects and color sources

We do have an Eastman project forthcoming (Along with colors from Technicolor in the works)

Hinted at here: http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/What-does-Lucasfilm-or-George-Lucas-really-have-as-Reference-Material/id/47412

Stay tuned for more.

===================================================================================================

So basically, the grain, is real grain from the print. You could run a clean up on it, but we wanted to preserve it to match what grain might have been if this print was projected.

So, the movie didn’t look like this in the theater, and due to its LPP nature, it is more Grainy than Eastman Kodak shots, which you can see the replacements are sharper for in certain scenes, like Han shoots first, and the Crawl.

By the way, we actually did have a Screening of this very print a few years ago, in a theater,
http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Private-Screening-of-Star-Wars-1977-35mm-spanish-LPP-USA-oct-2012/id/14719

and we are planning future screenings of the digital versions.

We will post more details once they are finalized.

Is there a way to request a muxable copy of the Jaxxon print mono mix from somebody in advance? I don’t wanna re-download the BD version myself just for the theatrical mixes.

So, a new book came out and we learned so much, and it is called, “Anguilosaurus, Killer of the Living”.

Author
Time

Honestly, a lot of scenes actually look VERY clear to me, especially concerning the source. there are other bits that have considerable more grain, but hey waddaya gonna do, it’s the original theatrical release! 😃

I never freaking noticed that garbage matte outline on Obi-Wan’s cloak when Vader strikes him down until watching this.

Star Wars fans are a tough crowd. You all watched it on VHS for years and loved it.

I think a lot of people are used to clean digital images and it’s like they are offended by grain these days. I love what Harmy has done but I feel the Despecialized editions are way over processed. It’s a function of coming form the Blurays and uprezzed, being compressed and then re-color graded and being compressed again.

Watching this feels very natural. It needs some work for sure but this is my go to version for now. I think Mike Verta is going to blow everyone out of the water with his version though but that will be a tough one to get.

Oh, and in case I haven’t said it: Thank. you. so. f*cking. much, Team Negative One!!!

You know those days that we used to gripe that there wasn’t a proper version of Star Wars available anywhere?

THOSE DAYS ARE NOW OVER.

Yes, it’s no blu ray but this release has way more detail than ANY VHS, LaserDisc or DVD release EVER had.

Again, thank you TN1, for restoring our childhood.

I apologize for my critique and again want to say how much I admire EVERYONE who has put their heart and soul into these projects.

This is my first post on the forum. I just wanted to say thank you to Team Negative1 for restoring this film back to the cinematic way that I remember it, grain and all. I downloaded this yesterday and watched it and I was immediately taken back to that galaxy far far away. Thanks again for restoring that magic. I look forward to your next release. Keep up the good work!!!

Well, I did a little experiment applying a bit of denoising and making the colors more saturated and “technicolorized”:
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/158521

It’s just a fun experiment though - I love how grainy it is, because it represents what the print would look like in a cinema and the colors do need a bit more attention, which I think they’re gonna get for the BD25 release, but not necessarily in this direction.

Author
Time

I don’t mind grain, but is it really supposed to be as grainy as it is in some shots? I ask this because Mike Verta’s version of this shot doesn’t look nearly as grainy: https://vimeo.com/120218626

Either way, thanks so much to Team Negative 1 for all your hard work.

Author
Time

Ideally, it shouldn’t be as grainy, but Mike is trying to approximate the look of the negative as much as he can with existing 35mm sources, including both colour and grain definition. Team Negative1 have said this is a preservation of how this LPP would have looked in theatres. Different goals with different approaches.
