What does Lucasfilm or George Lucas really have as Reference Material

Many times, it has been said that George Lucas has used a
Technicolor print as the reference for the SE editions.

Through the last few years, we have come up with some
more information about that.

Take it for what you will.

First though. A reference:

http://www.liftgammagain.com/forum/index.php?threads/star-wars-the-force-awakens-official-teaser.3931/

“Actually, we used George Lucas’ personal Tech IB print for comparison when I worked on the digital color-correction of Star Wars and Jedi at ILM in San Rafael. You can always make the argument that all previous home video versions looked different, but this was the only version that was actually supervised and approved by the director. Good or bad, it’s what he specifically wanted.”

Now this person is accredited, so it might be right.

However, from what we know, basically George Lucas consulted
with the film collector community, and ended up borrowing
the IB Tech print that might have been used as a reference.

Yes, they have negatives, and better sources. But they didn’t
have time to really use the Tech, or do much with it.

Remember the IB Tech print from the Senator screening, well that and
about 4 other Techs are out there. All of them have damage on them,
and need to be cropped heavily. Almost all have been scanned now,
and will be digitally combined, but not by Disney or FOX.

Time will tell how this actually plays out.

Also the claims of not having enough time to clean and restore
the prints, along with the cost of it are questionable also.

They’ve been drifting out of their threads lately, but it’s usually been on good behavior and the posts are at least somewhat to do with their projects. But this is practically at the level of their ‘4k and/or blu-ray will fail’ editorials.

Plus, since this post was done by negative1 himself, he could have just made it under his old account.

I love this thread. Immediately rises to the top.

As a reference for what?

I think he’s talking about whatever was used as a reference for the Star Wars Lowry project, but I’m not sure. Either way I tend to trust the person quoted in the original post who actually worked on the project and saw the print a lot more than this.

Harmy used a Technicolor as reference.

We have access to reference scans, which were the same as the Senator print.

We will be using those as a reference for our own restoration.

Lucasfilm borrowed the print, but didn’t use it, as they had other sources.

Who did they borrow it from and for what?

How do you know all of this information and why is it more trustworthy than the person who actually worked with Lucasfilm? I know that the person you refer to in your original post has experience in the industry and worked firsthand with McCallum and Lucas. Was he lying? How do you know that what he said is inaccurate. Do you work for Lucasfilm?

All of them? Some of them? One of them? Who are you referring to?

For people that claim we’re ‘ruining’ this section, and people that don’t read or care what we have to say.

That’s a lot of questions to be asking. And asking to ban us seems odd if you are interested.

We are just coming to conclusions based on the what the owners of the prints in question have said.

For the record, this is the only part that applies to me.

I said that in the off-topic thread, but intended it as more of a sarcastic quip, but I have made a lot of disparaging remarks towards team_negative1. My apologies for the rudeness and disrespect. That being said I do stand by the fact that ignoring the rules of the website that has provided you with a place to discuss and share your work (work which I am grateful for by the way) is inappropriate.

Yeah well, since Team_Negative1 has provided us with the most accurate HD theatrical representation of Star Wars and Empire, I think they should be able to do whatever they want. They’ve earned it.

Yeah, 'cause this’ll never lead to an abuse of privilege …
