Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released) — Page 121

Watched Harmy's version of ESB again last night and I have to say that it is by far the best color treatment available of this film.

The blues on Hoth and the foul greens on Dagobah are gone and it just looks natural. Other versions have improved on the Bluray coloring but none have pushed it this far and made it look this good.

I'm curious to know what color reference he used as from what I've read there is no Technicolor print available of ESB?

Well done mate!

I think he mostly used color-adjusted GOUT (i.e. the GOUT adjusted to remove its known color bias), but there are other good sources, like the Japanese Special Collection Laserdisc and the -1 preservations, which I think were useful in bringing the warmth back to Cloud City interiors--the GOUT was based on some up-level source that made Cloud City interiors cool bluish in earlier versions.

But the lack of any reference as authoritative as a Technicolor print gave him more free rein to just do "what looked right to him", since there was no evidence stating it didn't look that way.  And I agree it looks great.

EDIT: Example of the Cloud City interiors here.

Does anyone know what the MD5 checksum is for the MKV file?

Not exactly what you asked,
but CRC32 is C4BF0283

Edit: see page 96

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Thank you!! Do you have any idea if the checksums are posted somewhere for Harmy’s ROTJ? Anyone know him well enough to tap him on the shoulder to ask him to post them at the start of these threads? 😃

Hey,

I’m new here. First off this is awesome! Harmy’s Version looks amazing, I’ve tried downloading it with no success. Is there anywhere or anyone who’s selling his versions that I can get hard copies?
If they can be shrinked to DVDs that would be even better.

Thanks,

DVios

Hi guys,

Had a request.

Does anyone have a version or could make a cut of Harmy’s Empire that just splices out the Monkey Face Emperor scene for Adywan’s Revisited Emperor scene?

Thanks!

I don’t think there’s anything like that available. It would be easy for you to do and a good first project + learning experience, though.

What’s the source of the 5.1 audio for ESB? Is this a reconstruction like HairyHen did for SW or something else?

Pretty much. It’s the audio from the 93 laserdiscs (and a bass channel from the blurays) with all the necessary tweeks (levels, fixing a few missing sound effects, etc)

But keep in mind that the 70mm version, which would have contained the surround sound mix, is different in content so this is not a reconstruction so to speak. It’s more of a “what if the content of the 35mm stereo version was in surround sound?”

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

Harmy, now that you’ve finally found some time to start tinkering with Jedi 2.0; will you try to take up ESB 2.5 as well, or is it on definite hold untill Jedi is finished? Those last screens posted in this thread looked very promising!

And was there ever a comprehensive to-do list posted for 2.5? As life goes on, and one tends to forget stuff, I had to take myself a trip back in time reading lots of old posts in this thread. I realized that I deleted v2.0 because 2.5 was just around the corner at one moment. Something about frames messing with audio-sync and typos in the credits. Then I assume it went out of hand as more 35mm footage was made available.

You havn’t forgotten that floor panel aboard the Executor that was lightened in the SE, I hope? 😉 Just realized that I’ve been a member for almost 9 years, and spotting that floor panel is still my greatest(only?!) contribution in the preservation/reconstruction of the OT…

As always, keep up the good work!

What are the chances of ever recovering a 70mm print with that surround track?

Hi Harmy,

Im a massive fan of your art. It truly makes us feel like we were in the theaters when they were released.

Is there any possibities you will be releasing the next versions in 1080p with a higher bit rate? I found it with ESB2.0 it was abit pixelated in some scenes.

Just a thought. I’m a huge fan and thank you for spending hours on.

Yes, v3.0 will be 1080p. Where did you download from and how big is the version you downloaded? The versions I released were 8GB AVCHD and 19GB MKV - both way too high bitrate for 720p to be pixelated from compression.

Just watched this, awesome stuff! By far the best this movie has looked, flawless presentation all around. And ditto on the love of the color treatment mentioned above. Kudos!

Aren’t your despecialized editions in 1080p already?

Author

No, all of the Despecialized Editions have been 720p, and will continue to be until the 3.x series.

A couple of things I noticed when I watched through 2.5, I’m not sure if they’re errors or not:

at 36:15, the text on Luke’s screen seems to be “sliding” around on the screen. That is, the camera is shaking but the text remains at the same point in the frame. This could be something that was present in the theatrical and just a result of 1980 editing technology.

At 1:55:54, Both of C-3PO’s legs are gold, when both before and after this scene his right leg is silver. Again I don’t know if this is an error on Harmy’s part or the original editing team.

You might want to post in the QC thread. Color inconsistency might be due to the Bluray color timing, which is indeed inconsistent between shots.

To me, that leg looks completely silver in both images. I think it’s just lighting.
