And AAWIL lead to Michael Jackson wanting him to direct Thriller.

I wish he would finally make See You Next Wednesday. ;)

Many consider Werewolf to be his best film.

An opinion I don't think I'll ever understand.

What's wrong with An American Werewolf in London?

Beats me, I've never seen it.  But why would you think of that before Animal House or Blues Brothers?  Or even Three Amigos or Coming to America?

I'd have to toss a coin to decide if I like AAWIL or Blues Brothers more.

Best film has nothing to do with it.  When you're writing a story, do you reference someone's best, or someone's most famous?

source.  Anyone have any thoughts on this?  Likelihood of reality?

At this point, I'm guessing that keeping this rumor circulating is simply the most cost-effective way of keeping Star Wars relevant.  Just in time for a new film, what a coincidence!

EDIT: Either that, or it's just your standard everyday confusion over the term "original trilogy", where the original speaker means the special editions and everyone else hears what they want to hear, and passes along their misinterpretation.

I'd love to hear what Landis himself said verbatim, but it seems that Empire magazine interpreted his statement as being the original versions specifically.

I really hope Landis is the way we find out.

Beverly Hills Cop 3. Not as good as the first two, especially part one. I forgot he had a cameo until I watched them again a few months back.

As for the release I would actually hope they hold off until next year, or more likely 2017, and put out a UHD (4K, HDR) blu-ray combo pack or something. Maybe with a Dolby Atmos mix. We can dream. But would there be new errors introduced? Can we ever be truly satisfied?

Fair point, though it's a cult fave (especially with nerdy types) so that's probably why it was used in an article about Star Wars.

Also, I think Trading Places is more popular than Three Amigos.

I see the usual suspects showed up throw cold water on that tweet. Their heads are going to off like in Scanners if it turns out to be true. ;)

Last time we got this announcement, it turned out to be the GOUT. And this is confirmed. l'm pretty skeptical and lukewarm.

I wonder if Mike Verta's restoration has anything to do with this. I hope so!

Those comments are aggravating.
"I don't know how the old versions will hold up..."
I really don't understand people who think this way about things. As if everything has to be new, or contain something new to be relevant or even good.
And the comments about the 2004 bonus discs... How can anyone watch those and think they look ok? Are people really so stupid that they believe that's as good as a film from the 70's/80's can look? I really don't understand that.

Yes, I hear all kinds of people disappointed with how old FX look in HD and don't get why anyone would want to see the moldly OOT FX that way. It would be nice if we could get AAWIL with the mono.

Here's the direct source. He doesn't mention hearing it from Lucas but there appears to be an edit in the footage so I don't know. Then again, Empire representatives were there so they'd have to be flat out lying if he didn't later say that he heard it from George Lucas

I said famous, not popular...but I really should have said infamous.

Sure, but Landis is already not the first speaker in that game of telephone.  He heard it from Lucas.  Lucas may have said "the original trilogy--yes, John, THE original classic films that started the whole thing, back in 1977, with no changes at all to what I intended all those years ago".  A normal person could walk out of there thinking Star Wars was finally going to get a decent home video release and say that to the press without reservations, but in Lucas-speak, that just means a new 2016 Specialer Edition where Yoda is now CGI.

He was at Universal studios promoting an american werewolf-themed Halloween attraction thing when this came up.

I feel like Lucas doesn't really care anymore so I could easily see him casually saying "yeah Disney's going to put out the old version that were shown in theaters."

As much as we all hate Lucas for his betrayal of the OT, ultimately I think not releasing the OOT was just him indulging in a bit of megalomania. People say he resents or is embarrassed by the OT and he wants to repress it or something but I'm not sure that was ever actually his intent.

I don't think for one second that Disney would allow more changes to the trilogy due to the backlash it gets every time it happens. I could see Disney sweeping it under the rug, continuing to release the 2011 SEs, and then never mentioning the OOT ever again, but adding even more changes I just can't see them doing.

I agree. There's no reason for Disney to add new changes, whereas with George, tweaking the films became a self-contradictory, personal crusade. I reckon we're now stuck with the 2011 editions as the "canonical" ones.

From a business perspective, it'd actually make more sense for Disney to redact some of the more recent changes; would a casual fan who's happy with the 2011 Blu-rays care who shoots first, or whether R2 hides behind a rock outcropping? Probably not, but I'm sure removing the most egregious SE changes would have a few more die-heards reaching for their wallets...

He clearly swore. They mention a 7 second delay. So they cut it.

And then there's the mysterious Reliance Media project, which seems to be exactly that.  The 04/11 SE's are limited to 2K, so going back to the 97SE's, doing a 4K scan, and re-specializing is the only way to keep the SE fork alive at all for higher-res releases (and, given that complicated history, it won't be an exact match to the 2011SE even if that's their intended goal).  Now, Disney probably bought this project already contracted out and partly-completed, so they didn't technically decide to do it, but AFAIK nobody's killed it yet.  Corporate inertia is a force to be reckoned with.

Hey, I want it released as much as anyone, but "it just doesn't make sense not to" has been a valid argument since the mid-nineties and nothing's come of it yet--except, you know, rumors from "credible sources" every five months for the past twenty years.

Precisely, but the bigger question is frankly, why is Lucas telling him anything? If he's no longer the owner of the property, why does he know or care what's coming out when.

The backlash from 14 people on the Internet. 99.9999% of the population don't care at all, hence why it was the bestselling Blu-ray of all time when it came out and why it would break box office records in a heartbeat if a new version was released theatrically. People who care about the OOT are a tenth of a tenth of a tenth of a tenth of the population.

Of the general populace yes, but when you consider the people who would be willing to re-purchase the Star Wars movies they are a big audience. I think you're underestimating the demand for the OOT. Remember, we live in a world where there is enough demand to restore and release the Producers' Cut of Halloween 6. If there's demand for that, then there's demand for the OOT

I think the number of fans who get excited by a new version are probably even fewer than those demanding the OOT. I don't remember any "FINALLY, blinking Ewoks" articles. They draw a bit of criticism with each new version. But you're right that the majority of fans seem to just accept the latest version as the real and final version, and sometimes consider previous ones as "unfinished" or "the ghetto version" (real quote). These are the same people who absolutely exploded when they heard that they would not use George's pages of scribbled notes on what he wanted the ST to be.

It's difficult to pin down numbers or ratios of fans who actually strongly care one way or the other. But it's fair to say that there are enough people who either like the SE or don't care.

On the other hand, Disney/Lucasfilm are obviously catering very heavily to the fans who would like to see more practical effects and less intrusive CGI in the ST. To the point that they're being mocked for making sure it's mentioned in every interview. I'm sure the party lines aren't exactly the same as the OOT/SE division, but it's probably a similar type of crowd who strongly cares one way or the other in both cases. This isn't a move they needed to win over the 99.99%, or whatever is the massive percentage of fans who don't give a shit.
