I heard that the end of the film is Rey bringing Luke his lightsaber on this island in Ireland where he is in exile/hiding/meditating/whatever.

There's a rumor that Luke is Rey's father and that he left her on Jakku for her protection.  He should know that desert planets aren't safe havens. ;-)

Luke hiding in Ireland? So I was right -- Earth does exist in the SW Universe!

This is a photo of the Skellig Monastery on that Island. Could this be where the following shot takes place?

And I believe that this next photo may be from Luke's revealing himself (Obi-Wan Kenobi fashion) to Rey on that same Island.  I wonder if the location will even be portrayed as an island or in the film.

 That's cool.

They look a lot like the Whaligoe steps in Scotland.

This thread is now rejuvenating my desire to visit Ireland.

Damn my lack of a passport and money to travel overseas.

I actually wanted to plan a trip there this summer and nearly went just because I thought it looked like a cool place to visit.

The fact of the matter is, that if you want to visit Skellig Michael you really need a car, if you are on public transport then you need to spend 2 nights in the area to make the boat in the morning and when you get back from visiting the island there is no public transport at that time in the late afternoon so you can not travel on wards.

There is also the risk that if the sea is choppy then the boats won't go so you may need to add another nights stay in hope of the sea calming to make the crossing. The boats from what I gather are not the most modern sea going boats either most being uncovered.

So it's nice that it's remote and perhaps a bit un-spoilt but I have also heard that the traffic is bad and very busy during summer on the ring of kerry on which the island sits off of it's coastal drive. so perhaps not so un-spoilt.

Anyway I abandoned the idea as the costs in the planning phase started to rack up due to poor infrastructure and unwanted costs associated with both accommodation and transport. Still would like to go though and I am in the UK :). But the other factor was they have also had a very bad summer just raining most of the time there this year.

With the tourism boost the movie is going to provide, I imagine they are going to want to make getting there a little easier.

MSW has this today: http://makingstarwars.net/2015/09/star-wars-the-force-awakens-knights-of-ren-symbol-other-jedi-implications/

Basically there's some card game where characters have symbols to identify their faction. Finn only has a Rebel Alliance/Resistance symbol, but Rey has one for the Jedi Order in addition to that. It's not a very comprehensive system (there's no symbol for the Empire/First Order and Kylo Ren is listed as a Sith), but this does seem to suggest that regardless of whether Finn is the one who ultimately ends up with the Skywalker lightsaber, we'll see Rey using some Force too.

So this is the metaphorical rat hole where Luke's hiding? Pretty.

Maybe in the future people will refer to this bit of Skellig Michael as "Luke's Rock." I'd be rather pleased if that were a thing.

Just made a connection last night between Aftermath and what little we know of the Battle of Jakku that I can't believe escaped me at the time. Throughout the book, Moff Pandion keeps harping on the fact that Sloane is keeping the only Super Star Destroyer in service, the Ravager, hidden from the rest of the Imperial leadership. If there's only one SSD in the months after ROTJ, it has to be the same one that ends up wrecked on Jakku that the Falcon flies through in the second TFA teaser. This seems to be a strike against the theory I've seen tossed around that the mysterious Fleet Admiral at the end is Snoke, because the Admiral commands the Ravager and one would think it likely he'd go down with the ship. Of course, it's possible that it is Snoke and that he's no longer in command of the ship at the time of the battle, but I think it's more likely that we get either a new character in the vein of Thrawn (or, fingers crossed, a re-canonized Thrawn himself) mounting an Imperial comeback during the rest of the trilogy and ultimately having his last stand at Jakku.

When the old EU was officially discontinued last year, I heard some people saying "chill out, this isn't gonna be any different from what the Marvel or DC movies did."

That's a very flawed comparison when we consider the fact that the new movies share little in common with the last twenty-odd years of material. On the other hand, since all of the new media going forward will exist on the same level of canon, maybe they're just going to let the new movies do their own thing* and use the ancillary stuff to salvage certain elements of the old EU.

When I first read joefavs description of the big reveal at the end of Aftermath, it seriously sounded like the end-credits stinger of a Marvel movie that only the "true fans" would pick up on.

*speaking of which, do we know if the new Lucasfilm story group are having any input on the creation of these new movies, or are they simply there to connect all of the other media back to what the movies decide to do?

What if the rumors are false, and Luke is not alone? I'm thinking about that new female lead they are casting for Episode IIX.

Apparently the explanation for the crashing of the normal Star Destroyer on Jakku is in the Young Adult novel Lost Stars.

How so, Daisy Ridley's only 5'7. Unless, I'm misunderstanding the post.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

The Story Group oversees everything including the films.
