OHMSS - the ABC Cut (remastered) (Released)

Announcing the completion of a 2-disc remastered edition, in both PAL and NTSC formats, of the infamous US TV network, ABC, cut of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

This new edition is a widescreen shot-for-shot recreation of the original 2-part broadcast, complete with Part 2 promo and Part 1 recap, using a VHS dub of an ancient original Betamax recording of the 1976 broadcast as a visual and aural reference.

Video and principal audio has been sourced from the PAL mgm dvd. Original ABC narration has been lifted from the aforementioned videotape and mixed with the audio of the mgm dvd.

Although mastered in PAL, the project has been converted to NTSC - to test the capabilities of my new Canopus Procoder 2.0 encoding software.

Hi-res sleeve art has been created for the project by that same artistic genius responsible for the recent dvd’s of the ‘banned’ Criterion Bond’s.

A website showcasing the remastered OHMSS ABC Cut will be online soon for the benefit of the one, perhaps two, among the forum readership for whom this topic might hold interest. The site will merely outline the processes involved in creating this purely private fan project.

I, for one, am interested, though I take it from this message you're not filtering this out to the public?

Can't wait to see it as you already know it, dear Blofelds Cat.

Looks like I'm a bit hamstrung here.

The thread which mentioned the url of the website that discusses the circumstances of the ABC Edit was removed so I figure I was in breach of one of the guidelines.

Alas, I know of no other way to promote the project.

Perhaps a link to my general OHMSS website would be allowed.... but I'm not game to post it in case that too is in breach of the rules.

Any suggestions?

I can't see any recently deleted threads, and I don't believe that Jay or Zion would delete something without giving you a reason.

What's the difference between the TV version and the DVD? Is the only change the addition of the Part 2 promo and Part 1 recap, or are there other scenes which have been edited?

EDIT - Just noticed this thread was from 2005 - it looks like suntech bumped it by accident, and I thought it was recent. D'oh!

The differences 'twixt the TV version and the theatrical cut/DVD are myriad.

Basically, the US Network, ABC, rearranged the scenes of OHMSS so that the TV version actually commenced with a scene from the middle of the film and then jumped backwards and forwards using a voice-over narration (supposedly the voice of James Bond) to cover the utter lack of continuity which resulted from the re-editing.

The ABC deemed OHMSS too slow in getting to the action and feared that viewers would quickly switch channels. With this in mind, ABC souped-up OHMSS so that it commenced with Bond's escape from the Alpine lair of S.P.E.C.T.R.E. (or 'Specto' as the narration called it).

Several scenes were removed from the ABC version due to their redundancy in the new version of the narrative; and as the movie was broadcast in 1976 - at a time where TV Networks took their social responsibility for ensuring family viewing seriously - several scenes were trimmed of overt violence and risque dialogue.

While I in no way condone what ABC did to OHMSS, I have tremendous respect for the manner in which it was done (it was no 'hack and slash' job but a professionally edited project) and it has great value as an example of how an existing work can be successfully altered to bear no resemblance to the original.

"OHMSS - The ABC Cut" is perhaps the first 'fan edit' of them all.

I believe that the ABC Cut is available on Rapidshare and Bittorrent but I stress that I am not responsible for it being available on those facilities nor do I condone or encourage the publication or downloading of copyrighted works.

cheers all,

Blofelds Cat

I cannot disagree with you on that point.

However, I'm sure you will agree that it is important that such an oddity be preserved nonetheless.

cheers,

A fan of OHMSS here. I'd love to see this. Is this reconstruction still available anywhere online these days? The RS links are unfortunately down. If this isn't available, a vintage recording of the original broadcast would be nice. Thanks!

I don't seem to have it but I know FF grabbed it before it got lost. Maybe he still has it.

There was a post in one of the Bond threads recently with a torrent that had ...basically everything that's never gotten an official release... you could want. It was in that, but I can't find the thread - or the blog that the post in question linked to.

I've nearly got disc 1 from the share-online files - once I have both discs I'll do an x264 encode (quality will be transparent to the dvd) and up on demonoid - and if anyone asks (best to do this by PM) I am happy to upload the video_ts folders untouched on the spleen. This is one of my favorite Bond films but I've never seen this cut! Looking forward to it.

Okay change of plans. The DVD is field-blended, so I'm putting the DVD's as-is up on the spleen now, as we speak, and a deinterlaced version will follow in a few days on demonoid.

If, however, you want to deinterlace it yourself here is my avisynth script:

mpeg2source("ohmss-abc-part1.d2v")

crop(16,48,-24,-48)

#DeBlock - you'll not lose any quality and it's a fast script.

DeBlock_QED()

#Reduce field chroma-ghosting

#(this makes a big improvement)...

separatefields()

PointResize(width(),height()*2)

interleave(selecteven().crop(0,2,0,0).addborders(0,0,0,2),selectodd())

interleave(repair(selecteven(),selectodd(),0,9,9),repair(selectodd(),selecteven(),0,9,9))

interleave(selecteven().crop(0,0,0,-2).addborders(0,2,0,0),selectodd())

crop(0,4,0,-4)

PointResize(width(),height()/2)

weave()

#Deinterlace

crop(6,10,0,-10)

QTGMC(Preset="Slower")

# Restore from 59.95p to 25p (script is called twice so it doesn't lose sync)

AssumeFPS(60000,1001)

trim(0,183056).FixBlend() ++ trim(183057,0).FixBlend()

Function FixBlend(clip orig){

 orig.changefps(25*4,linear=false)

 selectevery(4,2)

 return last

}

#Convert from 25p (PAL speed) to 23.976p (NTSC speed)

#Note your audio will need to be converted eg:

#eac3to "audio.ac3" audio-23.976p.ac3 -192 -slowdown -25.000

assumefps(23.976)

If anyone has the original PAL release then of course the de-interlacing won't be necessary!

The same script will work for both parts.

Bump...

Yes he did, and it's a really good edit. He is also considering doing a re-edit of it in the not-to-distant future as well, that will be even better.
