Supposedly, Williams has already written the main themes and the majority of the score.  It has been said Williams will return to London in the summer to record the score with the LSO.  Will be interesting if this is true since Williams hasn't left the US since 2005.  He is also going to score Spielberg's new flick, which is set to be released in October, but it's unknown when/where it will be recorded.

John Williams to Record Star Wars: The Force Awakens Score in Los Angeles

John Williams is currently hard at work composing the score for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which will be recorded in Los Angeles. For the recording of the score, Williams will work with members of the superb freelance orchestra with which he’s recorded numerous film scores over the years. The music will be recorded over several months while working in tandem with the film’s editorial and special effects teams on the West Coast.

While previous films in the saga were scored at Abbey Road with the celebrated London Symphony Orchestra, this will be the first time a Star Wars score has been recorded in the United States.

“I’ve had the privilege of working with the very best musicians in both the U.K. and the U.S.,” says Williams. “The London Symphony Orchestra has consistently performed with great artistry on all six of the prior films in the Star Wars saga, and I will be forever grateful for their commitment and dedication.  Equally, it has been my honor to have worked with my brilliant colleagues in Los Angeles, and always appreciate the invaluable contribution they’ve made to my scores and to those of other composers.”

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is scheduled for release on December 18, 2015.

That was already known because Disney reportedly has a union deal to score the film in LA.

I was pissed that it was not going to be the LSO.  But it is not up to me.

It was rumored to be scored in LA if it is confirmed so be it.

It's confirmed at starwars.com.  Williams hasn't left the U.S. since 2005, so it's really no surprise that he's not going to London to record with the LSO.  The only way would be for the LSO to come here and that just isn't feasible since they will be recording the score over several months.  The teaser music was recorded in LA and I thought it sounded great.  Time for a new tradition,  I guess.

If it's a good orchestra, would anyone be able to hear the difference? (Plenty of great scores have been recorded in Hollywood.) I'm sure one has to be the best to get to work with John Williams.

Where were you in '77?

Fanatical audiophiles with ultrasonic hearing will. ;-)

Some people hear a difference, but each orchestra interprets a cue differently.  That's not to say one is better than other - it's merely a preference. LA musicians have performed amazing scores with Williams such as Tintin and Crystal Skull so there's no reason to think they won't deliver now.  With Williams conducting, he'll be able to do as many re-takes and make it sound to his liking.  And they are giving him many months to record the score, too.  This is probably one of the main reasons why Williams isn't scoring Spielberg's latest flick.

If it's anything like their pop music counterparts, the British orchestra will be polished but reserved and the US one will be raw but a bit ragged and sloppy. ;-)

Ooh, that's a really dangerous spoiler: Daisy Ridley is going to be in the movie!

Some of Williams' scores were without the LSO and they still sounded fantastic.

Interview w/ Simon Pegg on TFA set.  Again, practical FX, a real surprise. :p

Collider: Since you and J.J. Abrams are such good friends, what are your thoughts on Star Wars?

PEGG:  I’m immensely excited, having been lucky enough to visit the set. I’ve never been on a film set where everyone has been so invested in the material because they are emotionally and intrinsically linked to it, as people who work in an industry that was informed by the original films. Suddenly, they’re back in those environments, seeing those sets again and seeing J.J. work with real physical things, and models and puppets and masks. Also, the new technology will, of course, be involved in it. The original films were always about the cutting edge. They weren’t retro movies. They were very forward-thrusting, technological masterpieces, and as such, there will be that stuff. It’s going to be extraordinary. I’m so excited for people to see it. It’s going to be everything that we wanted 16 years ago and didn’t get.

Collider: It’s so cool because it’s a combination of this vastly different technology with a franchise that makes you feel the wonder of being a kid again.

PEGG:  Totally! I took my daughter to the set, and she met BB-8, the droid you see in the trailer. She sat with him for ages, and just talked to him. The guys were operating it, just off camera, and she was there. I said, “Come on, we’ve gotta go,” and she said, “I just want to spend some more time with him and have another hug.” It’s just a ball with a thing on it, but it’s a testament to that character, how much he’s going to impact on audiences because he’s so full of life. And that goes across, for everything. Also, to see the old staples again is going to blow people’s minds.

This sounds nice and I'm really excited about the TFA, besides, the PT sucks so bad that ANY effort to raise the bar will actually succeed.

I saw Mark Hamill in the CW's The Flash as James Jesse, The trickster.  He has not aged well.  It is shocking to see how much he has aged since 1995 never mind since 1983.

I hope Force Awakens is written and directed so well that age is not a problem or concern.

He looked fine in the Kingsman:

The only thing with Mark is that his voice has gotten a little guttural with age.

I don't watch The Flash but isn't that version of the Trickster supposed to be old and a little ragged from being locked in prison for years?

Either way, I'm sure he'll be looking rather Old Benesque in the film:

You are right he looks great there.   I am sure the makeup artist will make him look good regardless.  This is for film not television.

Since we know the track record for rumored trailer descriptions, I'll only believe it when I see it ;) It's still fun to speculate, though.

Very interesting if true about seeing the Vader helmet sitting on a podium; I can imagine the chills I'd get seeing that. And I'd actually be okay with it if they don't yet reveal Luke in a trailer, just as another way to make us very eager and wanting more (as if we weren't already) :P
