The best classic rock album of all time. — Page 6

She's a classically trained musician, from what I've heard about her. I just haven't heard it in her music. Being a great musician and singer still isn't guaranteed to make good music.

It reminds me of listening to some of these virtuoso guitar players, who can play any scale thrown at them, but it becomes boring after 5 minutes, because the shock value of their skill has wore off.

I'm not saying it's not entertaining, it just doesn't hold my attention for very long.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Yet she doesn't put that voice in her music. That voice is nothing like what her singles sound like.

I read Aldous Huxley's Brave New World in high school.

Does that count?

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

^That had to be the best thing the MKII lineup made. I don't think you can say you've heard Deep Purple, until you've heard that album. No frills, just great live performances. I think it's a better look into their sound than their albums provided.

Dire Straits - Dire Straits (1978)

Every guitarist needs to listen to this album.

sultans of swing = incredible guitar solo

I think I might have to check out the album now

^If you liked Sultans of Swing, this album is full of songs like that. Most of the songs were written for performing in pubs, so it has that charm. Their later albums were really good, but I find the simplicity of their first one the best.

Mark Knopfler brings that wonderful guitar playing to every album he makes, but the first 3 albums he did with Dire Straits focus on it more. He's more of a songwriter these days.

I admit Gaga's got an excellent voice. That doesn't change the fact that she's just a cog in the soulless machine that is the modern mainstream music industry.

And just to get back on track with the Doors ...

Seeing as I like many genres and subgenres of music from various different eras, this shouldn't be a issue with me if the artists in question have something going for them beyond having a nice voice.

Gaga -- and many other "artists" today -- are skilled when it comes to vocals, but in all other regards -- be it writing actual lyrics or the instrumentals that accompany them -- they're mediocre/inept.

Of course!

This is a rather late reply, but no, I'm not a fan.

I don't dislike them like I dislike the current generation, but their style just doesn't do anything for me.

A few of my favorite classic rock albums are Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band & Rubber Soul by the Beatles, Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen, Disraeli Gears by Cream, Station to Station by David Bowie, and Led Zeppelin II IV/Zoso/Symbols/The Hermit/Untitled (whatever you choose to call it). There're dozens if not hundreds of others that I really like as well but those are just a few of my favorites.

I just listened to But Seriously, Folks… by Joe Walsh and it is absolutely fantastic. I don’t know how I’ve made it this long without hearing it, but I recommend anyone who hasn’t heard it yet to listen to it immediately.

Purest: Never Mind the Bollocks
Rawest: Live at Leeds Complete
Most profound: Quadrophenia

But all time rock album? Easy.

Who’s Next

The followup to TOMMY was to be a huge cross-format experience, a sci-fi dystopia that to date is still resonant in our increasingly tech-centric culture. It was to be Pete Townshend’s masterwork, but no one could understand his lofty ideas and eventually the band were coerced to get in the studio and get some tracks down. The result was the purest, rawest, most profound and TOTAL rock album of them all. An Entwistle classic thrown in with eight of the most perfect performances from all four members on record across the board. 9 tracks perfectly balanced across two sides- balancing the light and dark, the rough and smooth, the yin and yang. The closing scream is primal rage and followed by perhaps the most lasting couplet in the history of rock and roll.

And the cover manages to invoke 2001 whilst challenging any and all challengers to take their best shot…that is after the band has urinated on a concrete slab/monolith.

Best experienced on the early US LP with the West Coast laquer cutting or its rare early UK counterpart. These are so incredible that it’s like hearing the songs for the first time.

Many great bands aren’t “rock bands” in that sense, but WN manages to run the gamut of the Who’s collective powers in spite of it not quite reaching the truly deep emotional/thematic depths of Quadrophenia.

Couldn’t agree more. Who’s Next was also a life changing rock & roll moment for me, along with Tommy and the Who Sell Out.

Another album I’d like to throw in as one of the greatest of all time is Blondie’s Parallel Lines; it’s an album I can never get tired of. It’s very dark, and pretty morbid at times (specifically on Picture This & One Way or Another), which makes it even better. I always loved how the album version of Heart of Glass ended with the lyric “Once had a love and it was a gas / Soon turned out, to be a pain in the ass”. It’s funny, but also a very nice arc to the song’s narrative.

I must admit I’m rather fond of Love It To Death by Alice Cooper.
