AR:SE:HD?

This acronym just gets ruder and more Scottish with each new iteration  :-D

What about AR:SE:PAL for a proper Scottish transfer?

It seems to me that once an HD version is completed the NTSC vs. PAL thing is no longer an issue.  Besides, who wants to go through all the trouble to make something like this just to crank it up so it plays too fast and all the music is off key just so a Pal version can exist?

Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The force shall free me.

why cap at 720p?  no 1080p?

The current OT Bluray transfers only hold up to 720p, there is no detail loss between a 1080p and 720p using the outdated Lowry masters.

Also, the rendering times is greatly increased in 1080p when compared to 720p.

Furthermore, the revisited PT will require more drastic cropping to certain shots, as well as (maybe) integration of upscaled deleted scenes.  So 720p, across the saga is better for consistentsy.

Back when Ady settled on 720p, his setup struggled working at 1080p so I believe that was one of the main factors. Also when it comes to the Prequels, 720p will allow shots to be reframed with no quality loss, so there'll be continuity between releases.
Finally, the resolution difference is pretty much indiscernible once you've got your Blu-Ray player's upscaler working. Just take a look at the below comparison:

EDIT: Damn you, emanswfan! :p

I did a few tests of ANH Blu-ray to determine whether 720 was good enough, and for most of the shots of the film, it definitely is, such as the Tarkin shot above. For some shots however, such as some shots in the Tantive corridors for example, there is definite quality loss when going from 1080 to 720.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Not if you convert the source material to 4k and crop in 4k, this will preservative some detail.  Down converting back to 1080p is a soft process.

People will wait days for a download of your edit but your concerned with  processing time and encode time? (I am all about the quality here)

There is a hell of a difference between 720p and 1080p on my 160" projection system at home. (Native 1080p HD projector)

Quality is everything, and as much as ADYWAN's DVD version blew me away when I first watched it,   (blu-ray) was right around the corner, it was difficult to watch on a 1080p screen.  Now with rumors soon that a 6 films will be released on 4k, it just gives me the sense that in the end you might be redoing all of your hard work over again. Lets face it, 4K is very close to the actual resolution of 35mm film, and it is not going to get much better than that. (not to mention you can buy 4k video camera's to go along with this.

And who knows... maybe we will see a original star wars 1978 version on 4k sometime soon.  (the sky will be the limit then...)

xxtelecine 7xx: What's your limit?

I have ~10TB of a losslessly-compressed 4K 35mm film scan sitting in my house right now.

Is this an acceptable release format for you?

You're all about quality, right? ... right?

Have you ever worked with an algorithm that takes minutes of render time per frame?

I have.

Come back and try to make this same argument assuming a total render time of 4 minutes x 175,000 frames.

Maybe it's the ridiculous size of some video screens that people oggle these days but I really don't get that much of a difference between watching up-scaled DVD and blu-ray much of the time.

Obsessing over 4K is bonkers.

These projects will never be done if Ady and the team have to wait for some hypothetical standard to come along.

The Revisiteds will be what they will be and that's pretty good if you are old, toothless and smell a bit of milk (like me).

This depends entirely on what kernel is used.

Nice screen size! I'd love to calibrate a system like yours. Which probe do/did you use? Can you load the 3dLUT right into the projector or are you using an LUT box or video processor of some sort?

There are some shots in ESB:R that have taken hours to encode just over a seconds worth of film @720p with all the layers & effects used and that is on a 6 core 4.5ghz i7 machine. Can you imagine the encode time when working at 1080p for those shots?

The blu-rays certainly weren't "around the corner" when i did ANH. They didn't come out for almost another 4 years AFTER i had completed ep4. Even the HDTV captures didn't come out until i was most of the way through the edit.

Even though i will be redoing EP4 in HD, i see no reason to have to go back and redo everything just because a 4k version may or may not be released. If i had that sort of mindset i would be waiting forever just to begin work on the films. I would be celebrating the release of the final film alongside my centenary birthday ;)

I'm with you, Ady. If everyone didn't feel the need to have TVs the size of box trucks we wouldn't need all this HD crap.  We were happy when a 27" was considered huge. To me HD is a big waste of space.  To watch HD is painful to me because reality doesn't have edges that sharp, why should my TV shows?  I'll likely download your newest version when finished for the editing upgrades, rip it, and convert it down to 480p, with which I'll be quite satisfied.
