Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD * — Page 80

They seem to be basing that claim off of pure presumption.

CGI looks pretty good now, as Abrams himself showed in Star Trek '09. The shaky-cam in the Falcon shot kind of reminded me of the imperfections in the miniature shots in the OT.

Does anyone know if there is a link to the BBC Tomorrow's World programme detailing the motion control work for Star Wars?

It was my first exposure to the Star Wars universe. I couldn't quite figure out what was going on. There was a monkey, a man in a suit of gold armor and I thought the Rebel command center was inside Luke's X-Wing for some reason.

It was then I bugged my parents to take me to see this weird thing.

Supposed to be some BTS footage or something on Disney XD this weekend. Watched most of the Rebels marathon yesterday, but didn't see anything.

The droid being revealed to be a real live prop doesn't surprise me.  It certainly did not look like bad CGI to me.

Just because they had a real prop of the droid on set, the trailer shot could still use a CGI version of it. And to me it still looks like that... albeit not like "bad" CGI.

I guess I'm all in for TFA, I already embraced 2 facts:

1- Nothing will be like the OOT since it was another time where things were different.

2-The PT set a low bar to beat so... maybe JJ will show the love for SW that GL didn't on the PT

I hope the movie doesn't suck but if it does I'll have many many years to complain about it, in the mean time ignorance is a bliss and I'll enjoy the excitement 100%

 I'm with ya there.

The other thing this film has going for it, IMO, is that if it sucks, I really won't care at all.
I've already been saying "I only like the OT" for sixteen years, so I imagine I'll be able to live with that same fact after the ST with no problems.
I do hope the ST will be films I love, but I don't need them to be films I even like.

Poe Dameron seems to be a full name so he probably isn't related to OT-characters. The name enforces my initial feeling that he might be "just an X-wing pilot" like Biggs, Wedge etc. The OT-pilots are well-liked by fans, the unsung heroes of the Rebellion if you will. Kinda makes sense to give an X-wing pilot a bigger role. That is very OT to me. A regular guy. In the PT the heroes were anything but regular guys.

I like the name, it has a nice ring to it and I can imagine me as a 7 year old and my brother arguing about who gets to be POE DAMERON! I guess my bro would have won the argument though, he has darker hair and him being a few years older seemed to help him get his way lol.

I don't think I've ever really thought about that before, but it's true. I think that's one of the reasons people relate to the OT heroes so much more easily than those of the PT. Of course none of them were ordinary in the end, but they all had fairly mundane origins, Leia being the notable exception. Even she, however, was easy to relate to because she seemed normal, as if she had had a normal upbringing and had just happened to be a princess.

Now, if we contrast Leia with Padmé, there's a marked difference. Likewise, Anakin has an extraordinary life, going from a slave with incredible talents to a famous and powerful Jedi to a Sith Lord. Most of the main characters have superpowers, or are politicians, or are both. The ordinary people are either aliens who are next to impossible to relate to (take Jar Jar, for example) or have only minor or background roles.

The PT also focused too much on the wrong side of life. Star Wars was never about the politics, even though we could see they existed in the background, but the PT brought that into the forefront. We saw too much of the Jedi and learned too much of what they believed and taught for them to be cool or interesting anymore. It would have been better to see them more from the outside, or to focus on a small number of them, with the others being more in the background.

Ah, well, yet another area of the PT that went wrong, which makes the possibility of making something good out of it seem still less likely.

Which is odd considering that while Padme was only elected queen for a short period of time during her late teens, Leia had been raised as royalty right from infancy.

I'd maybe disagree with this perspective on Leia.

Leia swaggers round in ANH with a huge sense of Royal entitlement "Will someone get this big walking carpet out of my way?" (Not, get out of my way, but asking will somebody else do it for me!) and Han's sarcastic "Maybe you'd like it back in your cell, your Highness" is a reaction to that attitude. General Kenobi is the only character she shows any defrence to, perhaps because he fought alongside her father, giving him the same status in society in her eyes.

Now, because right from the get go we see she is a fearless freedom fighter risking her life and position for the rebellion we love her. But if she was just a Princess to be rescued, I think she'd come off quite badly. There'd only be a whisker between her and Princess Vespa.

So I went and saw the new Hobbit at my local full size IMAX.

Just from the first few notes I immediately knew the TFA teaser was starting. It looked GLORIOUS up on that six story tall screen. And it was in 3D! Which looked surprisingly naturalistic.

So the teaser is in 3d already?  I guess I hope it looks great, cause 3D conversions range from horrible (Clash of the Titans) to amazing (Titanic).

I guess since I'm seeing Hobbit tonight, I'll see it up on a 3 story screen.

So is the TFA teaser only playing at iMAX showings of The Hobbit?

Because I didn't see it in front of the regular 2D showing I went to the other day. Mind you I maybe missed it as I got half way into the trailer/advert/messages due to a cinema  ticketing screw up. If it's at all Hobbit screenings I might have to go see it again and this time get there waaay early.

 Same, same, same. Looked great...

But I think I'll catch the film in 2D first time I see it. That what Star Wars is.

But the 3D looks fine and I'll definitely see the film in IMAX second go round.

I would guess so since all of the trailers were for IMAX releases.

Looks like the latest video for the UNICEF is online and it reveals a noticeably older Chewie! Unlike that image a while back we thought he'd look like (in there I didn't think he was "aged" enough), here his eyes look aged with more white around on his face, just like how an older dog would show age - I think he looks perfect now.

Please, please, please tell me there's someone here collecting all of this stuff: the teaser trailer (in HD); the UNICEF videos; the appearance on John Oliver; the leaked concept art.

If not, then can we get something going?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

That doesn't even look like the same mask we saw before. Reminds me of an old Topps bubblegum card of Chewie that was inexplicably airbrushed to make the fur lighter.

Even when I was a kid, this looked wrong.

If other people do most of the collecting, I'll stick it all in the first post so it's easy to find. It might be a bit much for one person to do, so I propose that everyone takes a certain range of pages (and lets us know which ones) and compiles all the links/pictures into one post, which I will then add to the OP.

I'll take pages 1-5 for now.

I meant the actual files rather than just hyperlinks to them.

It'd be cool to have them all in one shared folder.

Ah, of course. Webpages aren't very permanent, I guess. Well, assembling them all into one spot would be a start. It would then be easy just to follow the links systematically and download the files. I would be willing to make a copy if people worked on assembling the links to them.

Let's try to come up with a list first before we do that.

1. HD teaser trailer

2. leaked concept art

3. leaked set photos?

4. UNICEF Videos

5. JJ's appearance on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

6. ???
