Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD * — Page 44

^^^^^

That isn't concept art or a set shot.  Had there been pictures here of the "actual movie" or actual video from completed sequences in bits and pieces, then yeah, I could see the "spoiler" alert warning being valid.

In the Agents of SHIELD thread people were discussing what had actually gone on in an episode that some of us hadn't seen yet, THAT is a spoiler.  Here you all are discussing possibilities in relation to set shots, concept art, and such.

Since none of us have seen the movie because it's not out yet I'd consider what's going around as more teaser material than spoiler.

I meant nothing mean by sharing my point of view on the subject.

Best image I could find on short notice. Had a spy shot of Shaw in that makeup and costume gotten out back then, it would have been a big deal. At least give me points for using the original shot and not the SE. ;)

The biggest leak on Episode III was the entire movie right before it opened. I imagine they will keep workprints under lock and key this time.

With principal photography complete, they better make sure all the shooting scripts are accounted for.

Imagine if this had gotten out in late 1982. ;)

What the Ewoks looked like were spoiled for me by a local L.A. newscast in 1983, mere weeks before the movie was out. Somebody put the ROTJ puzzles out on the toy shelves too early.

I think I saw these same newscasts as I grew up in Orange County CA!  If I am remembering correctly NBC local news did a whole week on Return of the Jedi where everyday they had a 5 minute segment on it.  They definitely did a segment on the speeder bike chase at least.  I would love to see these preview segments again.

Also Eye On L.A. another local show that would air on ABC did a good Return of the Jedi preview but this was at least a week before the movie opened.  Those newscasts you're describing aired at least a month before.

The Ewoks were pretty top secret up until release.  The Kenner toy cardbacks had the ewok figures blurred out for the first run of ROTJ toys since they hit stores before the film opened.

Yes, even the toy catalogs had them blurred out. Jabba was blurred out too.

I think the only ROTJ character to get any official exposure before the movie came out was Admiral Ackbar. He was Kenner mail away figure at the time.

The Marvel comic introduced a bunch of ferocious little furry creatures who help the rebels about a year or so before the movie. Lucasfilm requested they be redrawn to avoid similarities with the Ewoks.

What was the purpose of keeping those characters a secret anyway? There were so many other aliens we saw beforehand; why hide the Ewoks? It sounds like something George wanted for one of his "reasons".

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

I give you BIG credit for that.

If I remember audience reaction correctly, seeing Jabba in all his sleazy glory for the very first time was worth the secrecy. A movie should have a few surprises left up it's sleeve when you see it for the first time. I don't think we saw anything of the Emperor's appearance in Jedi beforehand either.

I'd wager the teaser is going to stick to familiar characters and things we already know about.

Those black things on his shoulders aren't actually part of him. ;)

Why blame it on poor J.J.? He didn't make R2, and why should he be expected to know exactly how R2 should look? I can't figure out what's wrong with him without a comparison picture, and I think it's perfectly reasonable that R2's been modified some time in the past 30 years. At least he looks used and not clean and shiny.

This is R2, Star Wars style. Note the height of the dome.

It's foam packing material so the straps on the board they wheeled him in on don't scuff him up. And I thought I had poor eyesight. ;)

He's got a lot of carbon scoring there. Looks like he's seen some action. I like the idea that Artoo has remained loyally at Luke's side wherever he's been all this time.

I don't see any issue with the dome - it's the angle of the photo.  There are subtle differences, but it looks like R2 to me.  There may be differences between ESB and ROTJ R2 that have gone unnoticed.  I'm a little surprised he wasn't altered in some significant way after 30 years.  Let's hope he doesn't fly. ;-)

I remember JJ talking about how he liked the used and battered look of the Star Wars universe.  I'm pretty sure R2's poor condition has partially to do with JJ's preference.

Poor R2!

If the photo shows the dome tilted back, it would appear to be shorter due to foreshortening. But to be fair, I was comparing JJ's R2 to the original R2 - as the ESB pictures show, the dome was changed for the later films. I just haven't seen ESB or ROTJ in so long that any change from the original model it immediately noticeable.

Wait, seriously? That R2 looks IDENTICAL to any iteration of R2 I've ever seen. You're just looking for something to be wrong with this movie at this point, aren't you?

I have high hopes for this movie, I'm just not feeling this rendition of R2. Perhaps he'll look better onscreen, but I just see quite a bit of difference between these two models:

Yeah, all I see is a photo taken from a different angle. The prop itself looks like an extremely faithful recreation. The only thing that looks even slightly different to me is his holo-projector.

Take a look at the picture SilverWook posted:

The dome looks pretty short there as well, almost certainly due to the angle, which is pretty close to the one of Episode VII R2. Also, the comparison photos you posted show that the original R2 was painstakingly recreated, down to minute details, not that they messed him up.

Looks identical to me too, even the holo-projector you mentioned is at a totally different angle in the two shots. I'm just pleased there is an R2 prop and not a CGI version like in the last film.
