STAR WARS: REBELS (animated tv series) - a general discussion thread — Page 23

What bothers me about the Art Attack clip is that it is overtly cartoony. The character is too agile (more agile than any of the Jedi in OT) and way too fearless. Am I supposed to worry about her well-being? I find it hard when she is just bouncing around care-free while stormtroopers are blasting away at her.

Too much of this:

The clip would be a lot more effective if she would really have to run for her life. She could still ridicule the stormtroopers or whatever but it would have to be more subtle for me to care about what is going on.

Oh well, it's just a clip to show off the character. I hope the characters aren't as superhuman and Bugs Bunny-esque in the actual show.

The same goes for the other clip with Zeb. "Oh, I'll just take on these stormtroopers for kicks, smirk and throw in some one-liners while these stormtroopers point their blasters at me without pulling the trigger."

I suppose one could argue that IT IS A CARTOON. Fair enough, but I have a hard time feeling like I'm watching Star Wars when the characters do stuff that could never happen in the OT-world. It just takes me right out of it. The clip with the TIE-fighters was much better since that scene is (almost) plausible within the OT-world. The dynamics are similar to the original films.

Rchdggr, I completely agree. That's what I meant by weightless characters. They bounce all over the place and move way faster than a normal human being, as well as doing all kinds of crazy twisting and jumping around. It just sucks any pretense of reality (even what is "real" for Star Wars) right out of things.

Was TCW any different?

No, and I hated that aspect of the Clone Wars' animation.

Does anyone else think the music in this is clearly a take on the basket chase theme from Raiders of the Lost Ark?

Overall I think I'm going to like this show. It's a pretty standard Disney style cartoon aimed at kids, but it's set in the OT and seems to do a pretty good job of capturing the feel of the OT, in a Disney cartoon fashion. Would I love something that was much stricter in its adherence to the look, feel, tone, "realism", and established physics of the OT? Absolutely! But that's clearly not what this ever intended to be. Bent for what it IS intended, it looks pretty fun. There's some things I'm not fond of (the madolorian girl and the slingshot in particular) but I can accept or look past those things if the show is good enough overall.

Yep, everything you said there is exactly how I feel too.

Looking forward to the new series. But I wish they could have completed the Clone Wars series before moving on to Rebels. At least they did try to round it off a bit with the Netflix series, but so much of the plot was still left hanging.

Not interested at all in the Rebels animated series, the Dark times comic arcs where Vader goes around slaughtering the post-Order 66 Jedi remnant are all I need from that time period.

Anyone else excited for the Tarkin, and Asajj Ventress/Quinlan Vos novels next year though

OMG! I just had a look at some of the shorts of Rebels. This has descended to kiddy bopz stuff. Mostly non-violent, cutesy, sanitized, bland, with terrible dialogue and Aladdin-like main characters that wobble and bounce around like they are made of elastic, plus lots of lazy and meaningless dialogue... just awful. :-(

Considering this is supposed to represent the darkest days of the empire, why oh why did they choose to present it in this amateurish and childish way?

I guess they're trying to have their cake and eat it too. If you're going to make an amateur and childish show, why not set it in a different era?

Seriously. We haven't even seen the first episode of this; we have no idea how dark it'll be. The Clone Wars was a pretty light series and even it had some very dark moments.

Humdingers has the right mindset here.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

You may be right. I could be suffering from perception bias. I've been trying to think of any Disney animations and movies that have explored dark themes or had dark moments. I keep coming up blank. They do have a reputation for presenting the cute and fluffy in a mostly lighthearted, non-threatening, and non-scary way. They also have a habit of sanitizing out the violence. And if the characters break into song they totally lose me. I am sure there must be exceptions. Maybe others can enlighten me with some examples.

Watch the end of Black Hole (1979). In fact, quite a few Disney productions have rather dark endings, such as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Though I agree with you that this show is too kiddie for my taste. There is a way to make a lighthearted adventure show that still allows the villain(s) to retain some dignity, and this aint it.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Look no further than Disney's first PG rated animated film.

There were gruesome scenes cut from the finale before it was even released.

I wonder if Kanan will use a blaster like Luke did in Star Wars (1977) and ESB. I miss when Jedi didn't feel the need to always use lightsabers.

Don't pretty much all the classic animated Disney fantasy films have dark themes to them to one degree or another? Hell, even some of their early B&W shorts were pretty whacked out.

The idea that Disney's always been some 110% saccharine, namby-pamby universe of pillows and puppies is pretty disingenuous.

Oh, and while we're at it, Disney's had naked boobage as well.

From the "Night on Bald Mountain" segment of Fantasia, which only a lobotomized Vulcan would deny is itself high octane nightmare fuel.
