Info: The "Lost Cut" Of ANH

 (Edited)

I remember hearing about how a “lost cut” of ANH was found with many differences than the final cut,
does anyone know if this ever surfaced in public?

Author
Time
Nope, never released to the public in any way other than pictures.

There are privately held prints of Star Wars, but LFL has supressed at least two attempts to show them publicly, one at a film preservation festival.

<span class=“Bold”>JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.</span></span>

<span class=“Bold”>Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.</span></span>

<span class=“Italics”>JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.</span>

He is talking about trhe first very rough cut Lucas ordered to see what he had shot and included all the scenes. Nobody has definatively watched it. Those who claime to says it is silent and in black and white.

Other than Lucas, Gary Kurtz, and maybe a few other bigger names associated with the first film I don't think more than a handful of other people have EVER seen that cut and they only saw it in private exhibitions at LFL, Skywalker Ranch, and maybe at 20th Century Fox where the executives may have seen it. I believe that Lucas' friends such as Spielberg, Coppola, Scorsese, Milius, and maybe a couple more "film school brats" may have seen it back when it was made. The last person to be shown that print, however may have been someone who wrote an article about it for the SW Insider. I think he may actually have seen the film, but all that's been leaked from that cut are the few cut scenes released in documentary material about the trilogy such as the Definitive Collection extras, the new 4th DVD bonus disc, the Behind the Magic CD-ROM, and a few stills from SW Insider. Very few people have ever seen that edit, and if Lucas won't even release the original theatrical versions of the trilogy you can be sure he won't release that cut in it's entirety, or even significant portions of cut footage. I was surprised to see the Anchorhead scene on the Behind the Magic CD-ROM. Someone should put the cut scenes on that disc on a DVD.

The cut scenes from the Behind the Magic disc are included on the TR47 7-disc set special features discs, which were done by Rowman.

I am definitely trying to recreate some of what might have been in the Star Wars Lost Cut, for the documentary I'm doing, Deleted Magic.

Very little has been made available, but of course it's all fascinating.

Here is the first part of my new edit of Star Wars.

(Quicktime, 21 MB)

Actually recreating the Lost Cut isn't possible, so what I've done here is basically deconstructed this first scene of the film. I've compared it to the shooting script, and included production sound and little notes on how the editing in the final cut altered the feel of the film.

The opening crawl is from the third draft screenplay ... it's not the crawl that would have been in the lost cut, but it's a version of the crawl I really like.

I'm currently working on more of this - I'm putting David Prowse's voice back on as Darth Vader as he chokes the Captain. Very entertaining stuff. =)

I just posted this in the other thread, but if you missed it --

(24.5 megs)

In part 2 of my deconstruction of Star Wars, we meet a less threatening Darth Vader, as voiced by David Prowse. Plus, Biggs, Camie and Fixer.

I have left out most of the black and white Luke scene for now, since I haven't done a good edit of this yet. I will also be using better quality media for the Biggs scenes, in the final cut.

Also in the final cut, there will be narrated "documentary" sections talking about the Biggs scenes, et al.

Lemme know what you think.

In addition to ANH, are there original "lost cuts" for TESB and ROTJ?

There were early cuts of both Empire and Jedi, of course, but very few deleted scenes from Empire and Jedi have surfaced. Empire of Dreams has a great Empire one with Han and Leia, of course.

Here's part 3 of my deconstruction. Keep watching the "Deleted Magic" thread for updates.

I definitely remember seeing a cut of Star Wars in '77 that I have never seen again since. I remember Luke missing with the grappling hook the first time and Darth Vader saying that he would be back as his TIE Fighter spins off into space. Also seemed like the landspeeder scenes were longer and Darth Vader had a scene getting into his TIE Fighter cockpit. When the Star Wars Insider came out a few years ago withthe lost footage article, some of those photos struck me as familiar.

I remember seeing a cut with ALL the deleted scenes from A New Hope, it was broadcasted by VT4 (A Belgian TV Network) about 2 years ago. I don't know if they're going to air the cut again but if they do ill try to record it, but i can't rip or publish it to the internet.

If they replay what you saw we can help you identify what it was.  My guess is it either the Legacy Revealed Documentary (http://www.history.com/shows/star-wars-the-legacy-revealed/videos/star-wars-the-legacy-revealed-discovering-star-wars#star-wars-the-legacy-revealed-discovering-star-wars)

or the Empire of Dreams doc. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_of_Dreams)  or a friend was showing you the fan made doc. Deleted Magic.  (http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-Deleted-Magic/topic/1284/)

No it wasn't any documentary it was the movie with all the deleted scenes back in and remastered. They where even colored in.

How do you mean "Not believing you in the least"?

Lucasfilm has a tight grip on deleted scenes- they would have never allowed a "lost cut" to be broadcast, in any way, shape or form.

Author

LFL won't allow broadcasts of anything other than the SE's.  The theatrical version isn't allowed to be broadcast, how would this "Lost Cut" even see the light of day?*

*Granted, I'd love to be wrong and actually see a broadcast version of the Lost Cut, but I ain't gonna hold my breath.
