Can someone please read through the mini-flamewars and explain why those with the opposing viewpoint (rein-o, firehorse_44) so often conclude that peaceful coexistence is not an option?

I'm at my wits' end and I'm almost ready to start bitchin'.

That's probably the best explanation I'll get, unfortunately. :-(

Those two are really trying to run us out of there. I somehow became the representative of the "more technically-minded Laserdisc people" and, in consequence, I'm being blamed for the derailment of the entire forum.

My #1 beef at the moment is that those two members seem to be incapable of posting a coherent rebuttal. Furthermore, I don't even think that they read what I write. They just pop in, bitch & complain, and leave.

The level of discourse is so low that I feel as if I'm debating with indignant children rather than middle-aged men.

There might be. I haven't looked into that yet.

I'm not sure how much of the LDDb community agrees with them, so I'm not even sure if it's worthwhile to stick around.

I attempted to bring a few of the more "technical" members over to AMPS, but I think that the limited exposure (due to the locked-down nature of AMPS) made them go back to posting on LDDb exclusively.

To be fair, saying:

I'm actually not a big fan of the format at all and I can't wait to sell most of my stuff when I'm done.

... is a little incendiary on an enthusiast-based forum.

I recently joined a forum dedicated to audio cassettes, and caught a forum post from someone saying how bad MP3 audio sounded. Now I'm a big fan of audio cassettes for nostalgia reasons, but I would never claim that they "sound better" than MP3. Nonetheless, I'm not going to start arguing about it over there.

They come across as ill mannered to say the least. And anyone who isn't seriously thinking about backing up their rare LD's in 2014 is living in denial anyway.

You ought to at least wait to see if that subforum is created or not. If they go in there to bitch, it will only make them look bad.

This is an excellent point. I immediately regretted posting that, but chose not to edit it out of existence for fear that that would do even more damage.

Unfortunately for me, I think my side of the argument would have been better received if I hadn't posted that.

Truly an "ughhhhh" moment for me.

I'm convinced that mainstream rap music is created by white supremacists and self-loathing blacks who want to make the black race look as stupid and ugly as possible.

Most "underground" rap artists would agree with you. Check out The White Mandingos. Good stuff.

Yep, we had it back in the 60's!

I loathe censored versions of the Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies shorts. The censored version of Hillbilly Hare is particularily loathesome in how the story's been completely butchered to remove violence only 17th century Puritans would find offensive.

My grandmother bought a VCR in 1982 and it still works perfectly.  Doesn't eat tapes and works just fine, other than it not supporting the hifi stereo track.  Think a vcr made today will still work 30 years from now?  Hell ner.

Usually DVD/VCR combos, so yes.

 This is fairly recent.

Believe it or not, it's not made in China, and has a lot of metal parts that went plastic in the last generation of VHS decks. Pity it's mono.

Oh, I know DVD/VCR combos are made (I own one). I was talking about pure VCRs.

Nothing quite like getting a new DVD in the mail, and hearing the soothing sound of the disc rattling loose in the case when you pick it up.

I use a JVC car VHS player. The heads have shock absorption and it plays in dobbly surround.

What's more I have another one still it's box upstairs.

I got these (back when I was astonishingly solvent) because British terrestrial television was beyond  crap... Doctor Who was never coming back and if you owned a tuner you had to have a television license which I predicted currectly I would not be able to pay for if I kept buying car VHS players.

The requirements have now changed and you can own a tuner without a license if you can prove within reason that it does not receive a signal.

The picture is the best VHS picture I've ever had.

My now complete Doctor Who VHS collection is as watchable now as some of it was back in 1986.
