You'd think they'd clean this up - the unfixed issues of the 2004 OT SE DVD release...

Have you ever sat down and watched a Battlestar Galactica, and seen the space around ships look different from the space everywhere else? It has to do with the combining of elements, masking, or something (I’m not any kind of film expert, so I don’t know how you’d describe it…I just have a rudimentary idea of how it works).

For years, I never noticed these on Star Wars. In fact, its on the SE versions that I first noticed it, and since 1997 when the SE came out, I’ve only noticed it a couple times.

But now, with the detail of these new DVDs, its actually painfully easy to see. Why couldn’t they clean this kind of stuff up?

good question...and if you ever find out why they didnt maybe you can also figure out all the other clean ups they missed. AKA the sound in ANH, the emporers slugs in ROTJ, and various other mess ups i have heard grumblings of...

Errors still there

Lukes whitesaber is still there
R2s blue panels are still black in the A New Hope space battle
Vaders saber still turns pink in a few shots
Ewoks are still there

The sad thing is, I don't think that this will be the last release of these film nor do I think that this will be the last time that they will be tinkered with.

As far as the lightsaber colors go, that is a minor thing to me. Also the boxes around the ships. I don't notice them. However, the Emperor slug thing is ridiculous. How could they not have fixed that? When I saw the SE of Jedi in the theatres it was fixed but when they came out on VHS they were back.

What's next? MESE? The Mega-Extra-Special Edition?

We're gonna run out of acronyms!

Yeah. And now there are some new ones. Luke's lightsaber is now teal in the Falcon, when he trains with the remote. I can't stand the lazyiness of ILM. I'm about to recommend a boycott my self! Not because of the changes but because of idiotic mistakes like that.

I ask again, did someone not proof these DVDs before launch?

Ok guys, call me lame, what is the "Emperor slug thing"???

Yeah I am too curious about these slug references! I've never noticed any slugs before?

There are shots in RotJ that apparently gave away the makeup effect of the Emperor. To cover this up, they put a black blob on the right side of his hoods interior. R2, they were there in theaters. Projected film has a much richer black scale that allows the blobs to vanish, like they're suppoed to. The problem is that video doesn't have nearly as good a black scale. Hence the slugs and garbage mattes resurface.

Well, when I watched ROTJ last night, I didn't notice the slugs and I paid extra close attention. ON these new DVDs the slugs appear to be gone. I'm glad of that.

I have to pop my DVD into my real player (not my PC) again to figure out exactly where I spotted this trouble.
On my PC, I couldn't find it.

I spotted it during the escape from the Death Star (Chapter 36, I think). One TIE fighter flies past the Falcon (towards the camera I think), and half the screen is filled with greenish-black space, instead of blackish-black space.

I've noticed that problem for a long time. However, when I watched that section on my DVD player, it looked like it was fixed. Instead of black space it now looks like real 'space' complete with stars.

I think it might have to do with how you have the black level set on your TV. I'm wondering if some people have the setting higher than others...hence no greenish block around the Tie Fighter. I see it on my TV, but my black setting could probably be higher. Then again, Lucas should've fixed it so it wouldn't be visible no matter what.

If you just watch the the people, ships or explosions, you typically don't notice bad SFX and continuity errors.

Unless the SFX are either really (Super stardestroyer crash) bad or, a character themselves (Jabba the CG Hutt), or the continuity error is enormous, like Lukes greensaber in the Falcon in ANH.

Thanks for clearing up the "slug" reference, I know what you mean now, just never heard them called that. I have a set off eBay and they aren't on there, but I think I they are on my 95' videos.

I know this has been discussed elsewhere, though I feel it is worth highlighting in this thread too (and for the 2011 and 2019 ‘what have they still not fixed?’ threads):

Never forget that the Death Star has been in clear site of Yavin IV from the beginning of the battle since 1997 and this is how the Special Edition should have ended. https://www.wired.com/story/put-original-star-wars-on-disney-plus/’ - https://twitter.com/StarWarsVisComp/status/1279501550575136771

It is how George always wanted it - or something like that? 😉

And he is sorry that you fell in love with the unfinished version which was in the unfinished film for 20 years, but that is how he wants it since 1997, and how it should have always been. [cough]

Even for other Star Wars films he did not make or direct, and has made alterations to since…

Four years on and still throwing accusations, slurs and abuse at the OT & anyone outside their Salacious Crumb filled clique. + FE Discord “to vent” more at the OT. Wook’s take.

From Pablo Hidalgo:

One of those ‘now that you know, you can’t unsee it,’ every CG X-wing in the Special Edition has Wedge’s wing markings.

And from the 2011 Special Edition:

in two shots at 29:47 and 29:50 of ANH, R2’s position shifts quite a bit, as do the rocks on the right, but the rocks on the left, added in 2011, remain exactly in place

I cannot make the gif linked to the above tweet appear appear on here. If anyone can post it on here please do. It is funny to see.

Is there a thread, article, or resource which lists all the errors and mistakes introduced into the Original Trilogy films by the alterations made in the Special Editions (1997, 2004, 2011, and 2019)?

I follow some of Star Wars Visual Comparisons exhaustive work on listing all the changes made to the theatrical cuts, and have also read through some of the many great threads on here. But I can not find a resource dedicated to just the Special Editions’ errors and mistakes.

Does such a resource exist? Can someone point me to it, please?
