If you try using XP after end of support, you get the Frink virus.

I thought i was already being spammed with that ship.......

Funny, no one ever uses the word "Vista" in these type of treads, as that was a white elephant aswell.

Would be really funny if Microsoft did some sort of self destruct thing disguised as a final XP update. Of course some vital industry still stubbornly clinging to using XP in their systems would implode, and mass chaos would ensue...

That "vital industry" is the USG. Not kidding.

I still use Windows XP on my desktop computer because I have a bunch of old hardware with XP-only driver availability.

With that being said, I do all of my programming on *n*x machines; e.g., OpenBSD and Linux (Debian).

I'm also on iOS all-the-time with my iPad.

Yeah, my Dad's old scanner works fine, but even Windows 7 won't recognize it. (Would it kill them to write drivers for this stuff?) Probably going to give it to the person I gave my old resurrected XP laptop to, unless they decide to put 7 on there.

I hope my external DVD drive from 2004 isn't shut out as well. Drives with actual disc trays as opposed to laptop drives in sheep's clothing seem to be rare now. I always feel like the disc is going to break snapping them on and off those ball bearing hubs.

Futzing with XP on the old laptop after a year and a half using 7 was awkward.

My wife has a new laptop with Windows 8 installed; after using it a bit I've decided (like 99% of Windows users) that I hate the Metro interface. Although I've been told by IT-savvy people that underneath it's actually a fairly decent OS.

Apparently Windows 8.1 will have options to go straight to the desktop and avoid Metro, and also restores a scaled-down version of a "Start" menu (with a shut down option!)

But yeah, I'm still using XP on my main desktop for compatibility with an old scanner. Work still uses XP as well, although it's getting to a point where some of the software packages are crashing often due to XP's 32-bit memory access limitations.

So I got a Surface Pro a few weeks ago. It runs Windows 8 Pro. The metro stuff actually works well with a touch interface but its still a wierd fusion on metro and desktop.

The 8.1 enhancements look interesting and it should be out before the end of August.

I will say one thing for Windows 8 - it is fucking fast.

Someone wanted me to fix their daughter's computer, so last night was my first extended time with Windows 8. You know what, after the 20 minute learning curve, I kind of like it. You have to think of it like booting into a giant start menu, which you can then close to get back to normal. I search for all of my programs in my Win7 start bar, so searching for everything in Win8 was just a matter of going to the opposite side of the screen.

People give MS crap all the time, but at least they have the balls to try different things. Everyone decried the Ribbon interface in Office, I was happy that MS wasn't just changing fonts and calling it a day. It's hard to change the way people work, even if it is more efficient. MS tries, and sure they end up going back on a lot of their ideas, but they tried.

The layout does have some great ideas but it's far from intuitive. Once you're used to it all things do move smoothly.

My frustration stems from using a touch based interface on a desktop PC. hopefully 8.1 will fix that. At the moment I'm exclusively using touch enabled device and it's pretty quick to get around using your fingers.

So far it has handled everything I've thrown at it either as well as or better than Windows 7.

The start screen is actually a handy way of having quick access to whatever you want, although I am waiting for 8.1 to fully configure it the way I want. The live tiles are so large that I only fit a handful on screen at once - even the zoomed out view only shows some of what I have pinned.

I've been using Windows 8.1 beta for a while, and certainly brings a lot of improvements to the metro interface and the integration with the desktop that really makes it feel much more as one.

For example, the metro control panel controls virtually everything the desktop control panel does now.

But minorly, most importantly to me it allows the start screen be transparent over the desktop (though it hides everything on the desktop apart from the background).  While, this seems really minor at first, it really makes the OS feel much more like one UI and that the start screen and the rest of the metro is an extension of the desktop and not a completely separate ui.

There are plenty of other good improvements, but I'm sure you can read about them online.  Honestly, Windows 8.1 is the version of Windows 8 that should have come out in the first place.

Personally, I love Windows 8.

It does take some getting used to, but it's pretty akin to when they hid the control panel options behind the new control panel in XP and again in 7. It's really not worth it if you already have 7, because the performance increases aren't that much different, but I will say 8 boots in a flash compared even to 7.

I'd say, if you're upgrading from XP, do it, if you have 7, maybe hold off unless you like fancy new things like I do.

I've been thinking of upgrading my XP machine to Windows 7 or 8 to run newer software like Vegas 10 and DaVinci Resolve, but there's a lot of old software and games that may not work on the newer systems. Part of me wants to keep XP and get a Windows 7 or 8 machine as well. But both machines would have to be at least midrange to run the video editing software. What to do?

Why not get another hard drive and install two operating systems (duel boot)?

Or, you can install Windows 7 (Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise) and use the Windows XP Mode add-on.

I have three hard drives already hooked up, and I'm thinking everything draws too much power right now as it is. But I may do XP Mode. Thanks!
