Nothing that weird, mostly local programming. I once got a batch of tapes from Hawaii that had hula contests mixed in with stuff taped off HBO.

If Ebay sellers were less paranoid about letting a buyer at least see the darn labels, I'd still take a shot at old Beta stacks. Even then, it's a crapshoot if the contents match the labels, and the tape is watchable.

Wish I had been perusing video tape reels sooner. I might have seen this in time...

I don't think a decent version of the Donny and Marie Star Wars episode has ever popped up, has it?

The Donny and Marie fan club used to sell VHS episodes of some of their shows back in the 80s... One of the ones sold was the Star Wars episode.  Quality is pretty good.

Do you know anyone who has one of these tapes?  'Cause if so, this is something just screaming for a preservation...

As a matter of fact I picked one up a few years ago on the D&M fan forum... I'm not 100% it's the actual fan club tape or perhaps a first generation dub, but the quality is very good.  Thought there were plenty of good copies out there already.  I can MySpleen it if people are interested.

Definitely, I second that!  Somehow that one has escaped decent preservation, and even the best copies I've seen have been lacking.  The community would definitely benefit from a nice transfer of that copy.

I think the same goes for the Bob Hope Christmas Special with the Star Wars spoof...that one was even more scarce at one point, and I still haven't seen a very clear copy to this day.

Is the Bob Hope one where Mark Hamill was a guest? My parents wouldn't let me stay up to watch it...

The... there's a Donny & Marie forum?

I'm sure somewhere there's a Donny and Marie forum post going up, declaring "there's a 'Star Wars A New Hope Technicolor I.B. dye transfer print' forum?"

Google it, there's like 10 of them.

Oddly enough, there's no Star Wars Holiday Special forum.

Maybe there should be...

LOL SKot, you are the man!  Anyone so unabashedly proud to be a fan of the Holiday Special deserves major kudos!

The seller also has Thunderball, Close Encounters and Sinbad on the same tape format.

Just tested the Close Encounters tape... it's EIAJ, black and white, in excellent condition.  Looking forward to seeing the SW tape.

Is it (Close Encounters) just the movie or an recording of a TV broadcast, or a bootleg / screener?

Puggo, could you possibly post a screencap? I don't think I've ever seen what this format actually looks like in action.

Don't tell your folks ... but I'm sneaking you this transcript in lieu of the actual TV special (which seems to be listed on a torrent as The Bob Hope All Star Christmas Comedy Special, 1977, with cast Mark Hamill, Olivia Newton-John, Frank Oz, Jim Henson, Bob Hope, Perry Como, Dave Goelz, Richard Hunt, Jerry Nelson and others):

Bob Hope's Christmas Specials Became an American Holiday Tradition

Hearth Invader

The year George Lucas propelled Star Wars across America's movie screens, we couldn't pass up an opportunity to spoof it. Our version, entitled "Scar Wars," starred Olivia Newton-John as Princess Hialeah, Perry Como as Luke Sleepwalker, and Hope as Barf Vader. The epic would recount the abduction of Santa Claus, complete with his sled and reindeer, literally gobbled up by Vader's space vehicle. (We ordered a small model of a space ship with a set of iron jaws in the front from the prop department.)
...

(Hope, dressed in a sinister-looking black leotard with a cape and wearing a Darth-like mask, crashes through the wall.)

HOPE: Sorry I'm late. The traffic was nose cone-to-nose cone! ...

The Muppets were on too? I was robbed!

And Mr. Hope looks more like Kaiser Wilhelm than Vader. ;)

So the version I have on DVD is not a direct dub from the fan club tape... It's an copy of a copy... Not terrible, but the fan club tape (which i pulled from storage this weekend) should prove to be a better source.  I don't have any decent VHS equipment anymore, so we'd need to find someone with professional grade equipment with the means to extract the most from a VHS source.  Any suggestions.

Should we start a separate thread?

If I'm not mistaken, Antcufaalb has a pretty sweet VHS setup. Might want to ask him.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

Just received and tested the SW tape(s).  They are also black and white EIAJ.  The quality looks excellent - among the best I've ever seen for EIAJ. (that means roughly like good VHS, albeit black and white).

Unfortunately, it is Memorex tapestock, which means - unlike the Close Encounters tapes - these exhibit sticky shed.  After about 10 seconds of playback, they ground to a halt.  They will require a few hours of baking before they are playable.  No biggie, I do it all the time and it generally works.  And of course I have to clean the tape path of my machine now that they have gummed it up.

I'm going out of town until Sunday, so this will have to wait until next week.  Once I know more, I'll start a new thread.  Poita, think about what you'd like these called.

Any clues as to where or when Star Wars was recorded? Would be nice if it was something we haven't seen a recording of before, like one of the early pay per view events.
