The auction specifies local pick up only though.

That's what I was hoping to find out. There are plenty of logistics companies that can pickup and deliver such a beast across the oceans.

That's very cool :) How does your 4k setup compare with something like that?

Similar actually, (except it weighs 400kg, nearly half a ton) however this ebay unit is upgradeable to 10K, now can anyone out there help me find a logistics company that could get it from Korea to Sydney Australia for an affordable price?

10k, whoa, that's enough for 70mm scans. =P This sounds like a dream pro-level film scanner many here have talked about before with how great it would be to have one in the hands of a Star Wars fan for use in restoration work. :)

I have the floorspace, just not going to eat for 6 months. I figure there has to be a way to get it here, I've brought big iron in from japan before.

Who needs eating when you can have Star Wars ? :-)

Looks like it will cost me another 2.5K to get it here by the time taxes and insurance and duty etc. is factored in.

Can you write it off as a business expense?

poita, what you're doing for the sake of film preservation is great, and I think I'm speaking for everyone here when I say I'm truly grateful, and I'm sure you'll preserve some important pieces of history using that thing.

I've seen lots of your posts around here and it's easy to tell you have a lot of knowledge so it's great that this scanner ends up in good hands.

Yeah, the auction said they didn't know if it was working or not.  Hopefully it is, or that it doesn't need too much repair.

I had an unusually heavy ping pong table shipped from China once, and the shipping cost about $500.  I had to rent a truck and pick it up at the Oakland port myself.  2.5K sounds a bit high from Korea, but then this item might be bulkier or take up more space.

poita, reading your post reminded me when I bought the Pioneer HLD-X9 just to preserve Star Wars (long time before I knew this forum, and before I even think I could do something myself, technically speaking)... and now you did THIS?!? You crazy man! (^^,)

I'm feeling like a noob... I express myself for all of us: you are our HERO! Hope it will work, and you could do some preservations soon!

And about not eating for 6 months: just eat half the usual for 12 months...

Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com

Yes I bought an X0 (which broke!) and then an X9 to preserve the LDs and now this. This is a very expensive forum!

Silverwook, unfortunately I can't write any off to tax, I actually earn so little each year I pay around $1000 tax per annum, and this doesn't qualify unfortunately.

Even if it isn't working, I should have the expertise to get it going.

The shipping is a bit high, but $500 of that is import duty and Australian Tax, and it has to be crated up. It weighs 400kg. I live 4 hours from the nearest city as well, so it all adds up.

I just though with 35mm prints starting to come out of the woodwork, it would be too much of a shame not to have a way of preserving them when the opportunity comes up. This was too good to pass up. I am selling pretty much everything to scrape the money together to pay the logistics company, so fingers crossed it all works and arrives in one piece!

It is in Korea, but these units were $400,000.00 new!

Shipping from Korea to US via a container company is around $800. Not a bad deal all up.

Congratulations!  That thing is huge!

Even with the high shipping costs if that thing works and is $400,000 new than you are getting the deal of a century!
