What if it turns out to be the Holiday Special? ;)

Holy goodness, that would be quite a find!  I hope somebody on this forum wins it

The holiday special! That makes a lot of sense. Well here's to seeing...

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

GUYS, we're going about this all wrong! I found this at Goodwill this weekend:

You just point the projector at one hole and a camcorder at the other and its TRANSFERRED! It's like magic!

;-)

I found the exact same model/make at a Goodwill!

I found something like that at the dump.
It was never opened.
But when I got it home I realized
I needed a projector.

I have one of those. I never did figure out why that was supposed to be better than pointing it at a screen. Same flicker-effect...

Looks like EIAJ, the closest thing to home video format which had some popularity from about 1969 to 1976 when VHS supplanted it.  I digitized about 75 EIAJ tapes for commercial release a few years ago, and I have a nice late-era EIAJ deck.  My EIAJ transfers are better than every commercial house I know of - although I know one guy on the east coast who has a modified deck that produces slightly better transfers.

The only other similar format I know of is CV, but that's about 5 years earlier.  I also have a good CV deck.

If it is a larger format, I should be able to find someone who could transfer it.  I'm a member of an old-vtr's forum and there are people there I could probably cajole into helping.

If anyone here wins it, I'll have a look at it and digitize it if it is of interest.  But of course I suggest coordinating so y'all don't bid against each other.

What kind of image quality can you expect from EIAJ recordings?  Better or worse than VHS, U-MATIC, etc?

The best EIAJ footage I've ever seen are the 1972 captures I did for Drum Corps World a few years ago.  Some low-res samples are on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKkONJpzU5w

Although color exists, the vast majority are black and white.  Most are worse than VHS, although some are well-preserved.  Playback is very sensitive to the quality and performance of the playback deck.  It generally requires a lot of maintenance, and a bevy of time base correctors and proc amps to get the most out of a tape.  They also have their own set of artifacts to fight.  I've gotten a lot of help from the olvtrs Yahoo forum.

Nowhere near UMatic.  Sound is mono.

I'd be happy to paypal you a couple bucks to offset your costs. I'm sure others would be willing to do the same too.  Can't wait to find out what's on it.  My money is on the Holiday Special, or maybe a bootleg.

I think it will be the movie itself, he had a bunch of other titles, Close Encounters, Thunderball etc. as well, so it seems likely that it will be the Star Wars movie rather than the Holiday Special.

That's my guess - anyone here want a copy of Smokey and the Bandit? (one of the other titles he's selling)...

Wish I had been perusing video tape reels sooner. I might have seen this in time...

I don't think a decent version of the Donny and Marie Star Wars episode has ever popped up, has it?

the thing I wonder about that auction is why anyone who could afford a VTR in the 70's was using it to tape random Donnie and Marie episodes??  Though I would be interested in seeing the commercials if they taped those too, that would be really fun to see

The Donny and Marie fan club used to sell VHS episodes of some of their shows back in the 80s... One of the ones sold was the Star Wars episode.  Quality is pretty good.

Do you know anyone who has one of these tapes?  'Cause if so, this is something just screaming for a preservation...

All I ever got my hands on was a very blurry bootleg sold at a comic convention in the 90's. A "best of" DVD came out a couple years ago, but I haven't been able to find out if the SW bit is on there. There has been talk about releasing entire seasons, but I imagine the music rights are as thorny as other 70's shows.

Turns out a decent quality clip was uploaded to Youtube last year, but it's inexplicably cropped to 16:9...

Not everybody was interested in taping Star Trek or football games back then. ;)

People taped seemingly random shows for the same reason they use Tivo now. To watch a broadcast at a later time. When I was blind buying random stacks of old Betamax tapes, I would find all sorts of things.

Bah...why do people do that?  It's terribly annoying and destructive.  And it makes the viewing area too tight most of the time, if not cutting off people's heads entirely.

Incidentally, Marie Osmond made a very hot Princess Leia!

...which once seen, could not be unseen?
