He isn't one during the OT, but given his valiant and effective piloting, could he not become one?

I don't think of the Jedi as they are portrayed in the PT.  I think of them as the Jedi Knights as they are described by Obiwan in Star Wars - great fighters in tune with the good side of the force.  Knights in the classic sense.  And by that description, Wedge strikes me as someone ideally suited to becoming one.

Unfortunately, since the PT pooped all over how I envisioned the Jedi (based on the OT), I suppose Wedge couldn't ever be a Jedi.  He didn't get picked as a Youngling based on his midichlorians, and end up in a monastery with wierd rules and Yoda hovering a ball over his head when he was 3 years old.

I understand and appreciate your point. As Yoda explained the force in ESB it would make sense. Anyone, with the correct training and guidance could tap into its powers because it surrounds everything. But i see the Jedi (and Sith) as an exclusive club. Beings that are naturally force sensitive who, above all others, are able to fully utilise the power of it. Why they are more sensitive than any other? Well that's the mystery of the force and something that doesn't need to be explained.

To be honest, I'd be glad if Wedge was not a Jedi. I'm tired of lightsabers, robes and the Force (yes, I know I'm a minority), and of the things the PT desperately lacked was central (or even good supporting) characters who were not Jedi or Sith.

We do not need another such trilogy...

Also, pilots are way cooler than Jedi. Proof?

Han Solo and Wedge Antilles.

I totally agree.....the Jedi & the force are an essential ingredient in the SW movies, but the normal non-force users were the fun part

Agree 100% (apart from OT Yoda)

Nah...

It's a mix.

You have to have Jedi in the mix or you might as well just call it Firefly (not that I'd mind another Firefly film but that's like offering Blakes 7 and delivering Captain Zep).

Given PT-style Jedi, I would agree with you.  But the Jedi in the OT were Yoda, Obiwan, and Luke, the coolest characters of all.  And they were down-to-earth fighters - knights.  Right before the attack on the death star, the leader said "may the force be with you" to the pilots.

Also, pilots are way cooler than Jedi.

In SW, the only Jedi we knew WERE pilots.

I guess now, with the PT in the loop, non-gaggy Jedi may be impossible.  Shame.

The supernatural aspect of Star Wars is what draws me to the franchise personally - the regular Joes of the universe are of secondary importance, IMO.

It's the singular fixation on the Jedi & Sith to the exclusion to all other possible religions/philosophies/phenomena that is the problem.

^^  Well maybe we'll see Tyree, biggs, hutch, porkins, and Dack as force ghosts in VII!  ;D

You have my sword...  (oh wait, wrong trilogy)

I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

I'm with you, Jedi and the force are a pretty cool concept. But I like them in the way I like wizards in fantasy, if every character is a wizard, they aren't as interesting anymore. What is so cool about Gandalf if Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas are all lesser wizards themselves, while Frodo and Sam are future wizards in training potentially being led astray by the evil petty wizard Golem? That sounds like an absolutely awful story.

In the video game Dark Forces the character Kyle Katarn was conceived as kind of a James Dean looking low brow James Bond in space. I really liked this character, he had a lot that made him interesting on his own. For the sequel, they pretty much gave him the exact same back story that Luke originally had, his Jedi Knight father was murdered by an evil Sith Lord, with his father's old lightsaber in hand he must set out to learn the ways of the force, like his father before him, and eventually destroy the Sith Lord. Now instead of being an interesting character on his own, it became almost impossible not to see him as a hard to believe silly hybrid of the characters of Luke and Han.

I like Wedge but cooler than Yoda or Ben?

It's a bit suspicious he manages to survive all three films and both of them die at least once (four times if you include Yoda in the PT).

Noting that I do consider Han, and even Lando, to be better and more interesting characters (I admit Wedge is cool but not much of a character), I fully agree that all of the Jedi in the OT were cool. I think part of their charm was that they were odd, rare things in an otherwise rich universe, full of other characters. I got the sense that they truly were the last ones left. Also, the robes... agh, the robes! It made sense for Ben (Obi-Wan) to wear one in the desert. It actually fit with the rest of the Tatooine clothing.

Yoda pretty much wore rags. The only one who wore an actual robe was the Emperor but he is a kind of evil space wizard, in all honesty...

In the PT robes were the Jedi's fashion statement and the only thing to differentiate otherwise completely bland and uninteresting characters from the (minority) of others. It's ridiculous that the clones are more varied and interesting that the vast cohort of supporting Jedi characters!

I don't want Jedi/Sith and the Force to be removed, not at all. Simply relegated to one of the subjects of the story, among many others. And for Force users to remain a minority compared to other characters to keep their sense of uniqueness. In short, kinda like it was in the Original Trilogy.

CPY died after TPM, does that count?

I meant he died of embarrassment during each PT appearance.

I felt bad for him some those adverts too.

Not so with Wedge.
