"Bring my shuttle."

An often under-discussed change in ESB SE is Vader's line change from "Bring my shuttle," to "Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival" and the subsequent shuttle taking off, flying away from Bespin, flying towards the Executioner, the shuttle landing in what is obviously the Death Star's bay, Vader disembarking, etc.

This change has always really pissed me off for several reasons.

1. Vader has just walked away from the second most traumatic experience of his life. He confronted his own son for the first time, told him he is his real father, and may have just killed him. The fact that he originally made a dismissive "Bring my shuttle" command exemplifies that he has absolutely no time for anything else on his mind (also exemplified by his NOT punishing Admiral Piett at the end and simply walking away). I don't think he's suddenly going to worry if there is enough pomp and circumstance when he arrives on the executioner during a pursuit.

2. We never needed to see how Vader got back to his Star Destroyer. "Bring my shuttle" kind of economically fills that in. He got back there by taking his freaking shuttle.

3. It slows the action of the final pursuit scene. That is an intense scene, with the Falcon trying to get away. You just totally slowed it right down.

4. The introduction of the Imperial Shuttle at the beginning of ROTJ is a much sleeker intro of this ship.

Anyways, I know that in light of other changes, this one is less important to most fans, but it always pissed me right off. Anyone concur?

This was actually one of the more annoying changes for me as well. The biggest problem is as you said, it slows down the action, and cuts the music in an odd way. I didn't think that much about the trauma that Vader was going through, so either line worked for me, though I like the shorter one better.

Not to mention that the Vader's voice just sounded weird.

That’s impossible, even for a computer.

I actually prefer "Alert my star destroyer" to "Bring my shuttle!".

The reason behind this is very simple. Throughout entire trilogy Vader acts very calm and smart. He rarely loses temper (pretty much the only example is "Tear the ship apart!" in ANH). He is chocking officers while calmly making witty and sarcastic remarks (despite them failing him and giving him the reason for anger he appeared like nothing can get to him). That is what makes a villain badass and cool. Anger (losing temper) makes one look lame and unintelligent. The villain is much better if he appears to have everything under control and especially if he is emotionally indestructible (which "Alert my star destroyer" indiactes).

Also "Bring my shuttle!" doesn't fit with him not choking Piett. "Bring my shuttle!" indicates that the confrontation with Luke enraged him. But the scene with Piett suggest a complete opposite. It shows that Vader was rather disappointed by the event to the point that he doesn't even care about Piett's failure and he simply just silently walks away.

To me the greatest tragedy is the way the music got hacked apart.  It destroys completely the momentum of that important scene.  It is akin to painting graffiti on some great art masterwork.  It is bad.

I used to think Vader's ship was called The Executioner when I was a kid.

It's actually a better name when you think about it.

It's made of metal and it must be heavy.

It was the Devastator in the radio Drama but that was his old ship the Superclass one Executor was built later.  Shown being built in the Al Williamson newspaper comics series.

I liked Bring my shuttle.  The delivery is awesome, Vader is pissed.

Not only that...but Vader doesn't have to worry himself with the details of his Destroyer being "prepared for his arrival"...that's below him.  He wants one thing, to get out of Cloud City..hence "bring my shuttle".   Also as mentioned, the flow of that building momentum was screwed.

To me the best option would be no dialogue at all. It would fit the circumstances and his disappointment with the event the best.

My understanding is that the redub was not JEJ recording a new line, but rather a discarded line originally intended for ANH.

I will always call BS on that. No one uses the word "stardestroyer" in the movie, and Vader never left his ship that he would need to alert it to prepare for it! He starts on the SD, moves to the Blockade Runner, is on the Death Star, then on his TIE Fighter. Where would "Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival" fit in? When he left the Blockade Runner? I know the rough cuts were long, but that's ridiculous.

To me the line sound more like something ROTJ-Vader would say. Wasn't stardestroyers mentioned in the SW-script? Still, it doesn't make the change any less awful no matter where it's taken from.

It's mentioned in the script descriptions, but not in the dialog.

I'm sure its from Jedi. He leaves & goes back to his stardestroyer several times in that one.

Good call.  You're probably right, 005.  But I agree, it was a pretty lame change.

And when he were at it, he also took the opportunity to grab the Emperor-scream for Luke, a true labor of love it was. ;)

Now, I like the change. BUT I've always felt that Vader in the new version doesn't sound pissed of at all. When Vader said "Bring my shuttle", he sounded defeated and mad almost like "Damn, I almost had him."

What George Lucas should have done is this: Kept the "Bring my shuttle" line and add in the shot of Vader walking to the shuttle, but show that the shuttle is landing instead of being stationary. Does anybody agree with that?

I like "bring my shuttle" much more than the new line which I won't say

I like the 2 shots of the shuttle flying towrds the executor.

I don't like the shot of Vader boarding the shuttle and I don't like him getting off on to the deathstar.

I don't think the shot of the shuttle messes up the music cues that everyone says it ruins.

What should have happened in the Special Editions is this: Vader says "Bring my shuttle", then we see the SE shot of Vader walking to the ship, be the ship is not stationary, it's starting to land as Vader is walking. This way, the music is not really looped in a funny was and Vader still sounds pissed off.

Now for the shots of the shuttle going to the Star Destroyer and Vader leaving the shuttle, these shots should have just been added to the end of Vader walking to the landing shuttle.

I'm sorry, but I have to stop you right there.

It's 'should have'...NOT 'should of '.

This grammatical faux-pas is getting more and more pervasive, and must stop.

At least you used it correctly in you second paragraph. :)

Anyway, the scene should have had Vader mumbling under his breath, with a few curse words slipping out.

Yeah...I know. But, every time I see it, I immediately stop and question the education of the person writing it.
