Disney Acquires LucasFilm for $4.05 billion, Episode 7 in 2015, 8 and 9 to Follow, New Film Every 2-3 Years — Page 5

Disney Star Wars. And Episodes VII-IX.

Well, it's shocking.  But it shouldn't be too terribly surprising.  Lucas had to do something to ensure that his baby would be cared for after he's gone, and Disney is the logical choice (at least in George's thinking).  They are known for their overly fierce protection of their properties, and now that protection will be applied to Star Wars.  For better or for worse.

This has turned out to be a very strange day.

I think there is a good chance of the OUT coming, well, out on Bluray now.

Why?

1) Disney is litigous, but it would be difficult to crack down when there is a long history of fan-edits etc. being allowed. But they will still want to protect their property, how could they make it palatable to bring litigation? By...

2) Releasing the OUT on BD. Disney hates leaving money on the table, and an OUT release would help fund Ep7/8/9. It would also leave little excuse for 'archiving' Star Wars if they release the OUT. They can say job done, now anyone who is capturing the film has no need to, and if you do we will sue your arses off.

So I reckon we have a reasonable shot at an OUT release, or at least a release that just has the SE additions removed but keeps the various cleanups and recomps etc.

I really don't know what to think or say about this.

I'm just praying it's not the death blow to our dream of seeing the restored originals being released.

My own take on Disney's newest addition to their holiday video schedule:

Upcoming for the holiday season...Disney Entertainment presents the long awaited cherished favorite: THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL on Blu-ray Hi-def! With over 15 hours of redundant bonus features including Disney Channel cast members performing their own cover versions of all your favorite scene from the award-winning Special, such as inane unintelligible Wookiee masturbation!!Newly remastered from the original 1978 5 year old fan made beta tapes, remastered in breathtaking DTS-HDMA 12.2 surround sound!

My belief is that Disney will put the Holiday Special in that special vault they have that also contains Song of the South.

Perhaps originaltrilogy.com should consider becoming a private, member's only site to help protect it from the eye and ire of Disney.  Lucasfilm was good enough to fan edits, but Disney probably won't so much...  What are everyone's thoughts on this?

George has been absolutely lying for 10 plus years to us.

What balls! For all the evidence that we knew those pages existed, he and Lucasfilm tried to brand us as crazy Star Wars geeks or fan-boys, and now look.

I know we should be "pleased" that we're right, and always knew so, but I actually feel more angered by this admission of what we knew to be true.

Check out this blog just posted from Pablo Hildago

http://starwarsblog.starwars.com/index.php/2012/10/30/on-the-brink-of-the-future/

The Ep. 7 project was alive at least going back to June 2012.  Lucas was writing the treatment.  Now is this treatment based on old material or new?  We'll never be told I bet.  Most likey hes been lying for years and just never embellished on the treatments.

If Lucas just started the ep. 7 project, that means he did so in order to strengthen the value of Lucasfilm for the Disney sale.  He went back on his word (remember when Red Tails came out and he said it would never happen) and created the Ep. 7 project just to give Star Wars a bigger sale value.

Unreal.  I've always been a Lucas apologist, even though I've wanted the OOT release and prefer the originals, but this is too much.

For those holding out for the OOT Blu Rays, I guarantee some part of the deal was not altering the special editions in any way unless Lucas approves.  And Kathleen Kennedy probably gave him a verbal agreement the originals won't be released.

But who knows, he just sold his legacy to Hollywood which he hated for 30 plus years, anything is possible now.

Call me torn as I'm also a huge Disney fan. So while i agree that it's odd to see George ditch independence, who he sold it too excites me on the possibilities. They've had a healthy relationship for awhile now, and Star Wars is already less of an oddity in the parks than Marvel is. The very thought of some Star Wars/Marvel theme park all but has me won over.

Like most, it's the announcement of new films that throws me. On one hand, I've not been all that thrilled with where the franchise has been going of late (don't really watch Clone Wars, hate 3D rereleases, and am way behind in the EU, only really the Old Republic franchise has grabbed me of late), and think that new blood will help immensely if there's to be new movies. I don't really mind Lucas approved scripts rather than complete control, but then I like most of the EU (at least pre-NJO). That video makes it sound like it'd happen whether Disney bought them or not. On the other hand, it sounds like they'll do what they did with Marvel and Pixar, leave them to their own devices. So again, not much different either way, just easier cash source. I also think they'll leave the fans alone.

Either way, I'm not sure I want to see Luke, Han and Leia by new actors, assuming that's where they're going. I also am not sure about essentially making it an endless franchise like James Bond or Star Trek.

If this does result in a none messed up OOT release, I really won't care either way then. Though, like others have pointed out, Disney does mess with the colors on their animated films a bit too much. Cinderella didn't even get a new restoration this year. Though if Disney is taking a handoff approach and leaves it up to Kennedy, I doubt it'll happen anytime soon.

So who's working on writing up a nicely worded petition?

I think there's even less chance for the original versions of the films, given George's use of the word "protect".  I have a hard time believing he's really that concerned about copyright infringement given his wealth, but I can see him making specific provisions to prevent the originals from resurfacing.  Hope I'm wrong.

Although I agree that the legacy has already been tainted with the prequels, it's nonetheless sad to see Disney own the films as they did the Muppets.  Detest the company, and in the unlikely event the originals are ever rereleased in unaltered form, I will feel dirty for giving Disney any money.

I still like George & always will, but wish he actually understood what is worth protecting.

Well, nobody knew the future. And they were right all along when they said that George won't make more Star Wars movies, that the (Anakin) Skywalker saga are the six episodes, etc, etc...

Did that help us assume that Episodes VII-IX were never going to be released and/or had ceased to exist? Yes. Does that contradict what they are saying now? No.

all these year Lucas has said there was no 789.  It just came out of his own month that he did.  What a lie!

He did say there were going to be nine movies in the original making of ESB book.

Now now. People round here say a lot of nasty things about George Lucas, but I will not hear it said that he is inconsistent.

Yep... Just like when he said "Read My Lips- No New Star Wars" in March.  And look, there hasn't been any new Star Wars for at least 6 months.

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

"Yeah, well, George says a lot of things..." a young 1997 xhonzi on RASSM

"They're my movies." -George Lucas. 19 people won oscars for their work on Star Wars (1977) and George Lucas wasn't one of them.

What else is there to tell??  Vader's dead, Palpatine's dead, saga over.  Come on, a sequel to Return of the Jedi??  Read those words a few times.  And not to mention for any future newcomers to Star Wars, the prequels and sequel trilogy will look so fresh and new, while the original trilogy will look as "old" as ever, no matter how terrific it is to our eyes.  Ugh, this is BAD guys.  Call it a spinoff or whatever, just NOT EPISODE SEVEN.

Not to mention, as someone else said, imagine this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rz4m7euNPYM

And then the "Long time ago" screen, then the theme music.  Doesn't work, we need that Fox march.  And who knows if Williams is going to come back or be able to do all three??

I have a very, veryyyyyy bad feeling about this.

New update via Digital Bits:

UPDATE – 3 PM: Here are new and updated details on this deal from the official Disney investors’ conference call this afternoon:

  • Deal signed and announced earlier today – includes Star Wars franchise and all Lucasfilm operating businesses.
  • Indiana Jones franchise rights ARE also included in this deal.
  • First project under the joint under Disney/Lucas partnership will be Star Wars: Episode 7 in 2015, followed by Episode 8 and Episode 9.
  • Disney purchased “extensive and detailed” treatment for at least Episode 7 (and possibly Episodes 8 and 9 as well) as part of this deal which they “feel very good about.”
  • Disney long term plan is to release a new live-action Star Wars film every 2-3 years – films may eventually explore entire 20,000 year time-span of the franchise.
  • Lucas will serve as creative consultant on new Star Wars films. Kathleen Kennedy will executive produce.
  • Kennedy will serve as Lucasfilm president, reporting to Bob Iger at Disney.
  • Disney plans to expand Star Wars brand into many new product categories and internationally.
  • Star Wars brand will also be expanded into Disney parks, games and TV businesses.
  • Deal was 50% cash and 50% stock – $4.05 billion
  • Disney believes Lucasfilm value is comparable to value of Marvel, but valuation is only based on Star Wars alone – other Lucasfilm intellectual properties are in addition to this.

Whew! Stay tuned…

Dear god. And the fact that there was an actual EP. VII treatment included says volumes.

Star Wars on the goddamn Disney Channel. Can my day get any worse???

Better than Spike Tv. ;)

This seems to explain why the films have been running on Monday nights recently. Spike won't have the rights much longer?

note the emphasis on merchandise, theme parks, and product consumption in the official press statements. not at all surprising that there is a complete lack of mentioning anything about quality storytelling. lol

Going members-only may make Disney come down harder on us for trying to "hide" our actions. Furthermore, what would prevent Disney's entire legal team from becoming members with usernames like ReleaseTheOOT778083?

It's hard to hide... publicly.

Plus, it's probably something Jay would be against, as this website isn't entirely about fan-edits and preservations.

With that being said, it may be wise to do something similar to what -1s team is doing; e.g., a private website. I can help with this, if you're interested.

This Rinzler article is ridiculous.  Why didn't he post this information during the writing of Making of Star Wars or ESB?  Oh yeah because he was in on the lie to the fans that ep. 7-9 never existed.
