It's definitely "Sanctuary Moon". I think that's a holdover from when the script had the Death Star being constructed above the Sanctuary Moon that orbited Had Abbadon (which is essentially Coruscant).

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

That's okay.  There WAS a lot of confusion in Star Wars after they escape the Death Star when Han says "sentry ships" and a lot of people thought he said "century ships".  I thought you just mixed that up with the Sanctuary Moon line.

In the French dub it was the "Black War".

I got a really great brand-new Holiday Special Bonus Disc in the mail yesterday. The problem is, I can't read the handwriting so I'm not sure who sent it to me to thank them/give feedback.

Now I need to get a dual-dvd case to store my Holiday Special!

Having just seen the above-mentioned Star Wars Holiday Special Bonus Disc, I must say it was excellent. Created by a member of this very forum who wants to remain anonymous for now, this needs to be seen by everyone.

Here's an excerpt from the read-me file:

Star Wars Holiday Special: BONUS

A collection of as many materials related to the Star Wars Holiday Special as
possible... that can still be jammed into a single-layer DVD.

All materials were collected from the Internet, with a major focus on YouTube.
Nothing is original to this disc.

Media Coverage   Reports in the major media
Features         Videos dealing with the special as a whole
Interviews       Interviews with cast members and a writer
Animation        Including and related to the animated segment
Special Stuff    Bits and pieces directly related to the Special
Not-So-Special   Other stuff that's only tangentially related

Total length of all materials: 153 minutes

*** DVD_ROM ***

A folder on the disc presents a collection of materials related to the SWHS.

Documents are either .JPG files or stored as .CBZ archives.

The archives can  be unzipped -- they are only renamed .ZIP files -- or opened
with a comic reader that uses .CBR / .CBZ.

Where can we find such a wonderful thing?

I downloaded a copy from a.b.sw a week or two ago. Barely noticed it because a huge amount of stuff was posted at the same time so it was one line among dozens. Binsearch says it was posted 24 days ago.

By the way, Carrie Fisher's interview at Celebration VI is fun. These links are in 720p:

I too got an extras disc from our anonymous friend.  I'm still examining the contents with great excitement...

Celebration 6 was incredible fun.  Sadly, I missed Carrie's talk this time around due to conflicts, but I wish I'd been there to see her sing along to the live Holiday Special segment!  Many thanks for posting the video segments.  She did sing part of the Holiday Special song back at Celebration 4, and I did get to see that.

So this is yet another milestone occurrence: part of the Holiday Special (and not just the cartoon segment) has now been shown officially at a Lucasfilm event.  This would have been unthinkable even in recent years.  Just sayin'...

Skot, long time reader of the thread but first time poster. Although a lot of people can't stand the Holiday Special I try to make it a point to watch it every few years if I can get the nerve to do it. LOL.   It's hard in places I agree, but I enjoy it enough to keep coming back here to see what's up.

Thanks for all the work you've put in over the years. Hopefully you're hard work will usher in a point where we might see it officially released one of these days (despite how poorly most people receive it).

I'm a little late to the party on the new extras. What all has surfaced in that 153 minutes? Any specifics?

I always believe the Holiday Special could have been quite watchable if it had been edited back to about an hour or half hour. Nearly all of the guest appearances should have been left on the cutting room floor, and all those tediously long and trivial bits should have been cut back to short scenes. George Lucas should have been on hand to keep the plot interesting and to re-take the bits with very bad acting. The first few minutes are okay, then everything goes awry. Lots of silly stuff like baking cakes should have been shot down in flames instantly by any serious producer! And definitely NO singing!!! The wookiees are not at all convincing. Turning them into a typical 70s suburban family was clearly a disaster.

I have to admit the "virtual reality" machine in which Chewy's dad gets off on an erotic fantasy is kind of cool. But most of the "Commodore 64" technology used throughout the show looks very lame. In fact it looked lame back then, and this was in the days before Commodore 64s existed!! lol!

You're seeing the HS outside of any historical context. It's very similar to other tv variety specials of the era. Very few of these have been bootlegged and passed down over the years, and even less have been officially released.

Try watching the Paul Lynde Halloween special sometime. ;)

Yes. It's even weirder than the HS on many levels. And it's out on DVD. :)

As crazy at this sounds, I kind of enjoyed Princess Leia and her singing. LOL.

First of, let me just say thanks to all of you who've made an effort in preserving this film!

And now, can anybody help me identify which piece of music that is used in the end credits? Is it available somewhere? I'm making my own "final" version (until an official is released...) from the Zion-hybrid (love the quality!), but without the commercials. Would like to fix the end credits, and remove the voiceover.

Thanks!

As far as I know, it's an arrangement that's unique to the Holiday Special's soundtrack, which has not been released elsewhere (apart from Carrie Fisher singing the Life Day Song, which is on a CD-ROM included with The Star Wars Vault!).

The voiceover was a CBS broadcast thing, and is on every single US-broadcast copy of the Holiday Special I've ever seen.  The only way I know of to get the music without the voiceover would be to use a foreign broadcast copy that had the complete credits.  Possibilities would include the French or Australian versions, if you could find a copy.  The Swedish or the Mexican broadcasts might be good as well, except that they're impossibly hard to find.

Are you using the cartoon from the BD to get best possible quality?

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Author

Sort of. Haven't got BR possibillities on my Mac, so found it online. However, the quality is quite nice, and will work well enough.

Just curious, but has anyone considered doing an English subtitletrack for the wookietalk, using the script as a starting point?

BTW, saw the Bonus disc yesterday, and I really enjoyed it! Thanks to whoever made it!

Haha! Yeah me too. Hard not to miss that her eyes look kinda "dilated". I think she may have started celebrating Life Day early. lol!

I grew up in the age of variety shows. Many of them were just plain awful. But having a Star Wars variety show did seem like a bizarre idea, even at the time.

Why subtitle the Wookies when we have Rifftrax?  That is to say, I'd rather their version of what the Wookies are saying than what they're really supposed to mean.  Haha.
