Stupid question because I'm technologically incompetent: can I burn these to a regular DVD or do I need a blu ray burner?
The fonts used on the theatrical subs cannot be recreated using any existing font--they need to be hand-modified in Photoshop, so a straight SRT-to-subtitle conversion is simply impossible if you want good-looking results. It would be possible to make the burnt-in subs available as separate graphical overlays using the Photoshop files, but it would add complexity--users would need to know to enable them, and many software players still don't get PGS subs right even when enabled. Better to have them burned in, at least for the moment. There's no real downside to burned-in subs except for other languages, and I believe Harmy provides sub-free files to the authors of other projects in other languages, so that's taken care of already.

It's mostly frame-by-frame stuff. This is an example of how some of the changes had to be made
Are there any other videos like this for this project? I showed this one to a couple of friends. One is a huge OT fan, the other simply appreciates the original films as good fun movies. They were both blown away by the attention to detail and Harmys determination to make this right and are very excited to see the final product!
The final release will have more, I believe. That was just a test.

Ok, great! It will be nice to see a "How I Did it" feature on Harmys work.

Use IMGBurn and burn them to a standard dual-layered DVD-R.
This app will automatically set the setting for BLU/AVCHD, all you have to do is drag, drop and burn.

Well, this is not entirely true. Has the original on-screen subtitle font been identified? It will likely have been a photo-film font supplied to Lucasfilms. I can supply a digital font that can be used if a consensus of the original font name can be supplied. Drop shadow and 'stretch' included and everything.
You could probably PM You_Too about the font and stretch characteristics, as well as other custom edits. Regardless, the only downside of burnt-in subs (other languages) already has a workaround, so I'm not sure of the value for this particular purpose Nevertheless, if you want to create a custom font for this, create a new thread and I'd be interested (complete font if possible, not just selected characters sampled from the subs). I'd also make a personal pitch for a version with no drop shadow if you can swing it.
On the topic of subtitles... I guess you'd have to burn them in to make them look 100% as they did, but I'd be fine either way I guess. While not an issue for ANH... will the misspellings be recreated or corrected in ROTJ? As I recall Wookiee was misspelled and I want to say there was something else too, but not 100% sure.
Ben
It’s really sad when the “creative minds” behind something we hold dear are also guilty of its destruction.
I think if it was misspelled during the theatrical run, it should be misspelled in the recreation.
Also, if that's the only time "Wookiee" was officially spelled out, wouldn't that make the "misspelled" spelling canon? ;-)

If the mistakes were there on film, in cinemas, they will be preserved but I don't think they were.
Just to let you know guys, I've got lots of school work piled up (what with my final exams coming up and all), so there hasn't been much development lately. I'd wanted the edit to be done before I had to start doing all the school work but since I didn't manage to meet that dead line and I don't want to rush it, because I want to get everything right, I won't be able to resume work on this until the end of May.

No worries Harmy. Something like this is definitely worth the wait. Take care of yourself and school work, and we will be eagerly waiting a summer release! Best of luck with school!
Yeah, good luck with school Harmy!

Thanks for the update Harmy. It's your baby, we're just patiently waiting for your magnificent product. Good luck with your exams and we look forward to hearing from you when things settle down!

Yes, lest we forget, none of the official releases have the original theatrical subs. VideoCollector's cropped bootleg and Puggo's 16mm are the only sources we know of with the original subs. By the time Harmy gets to the DeEd 2.0 of Jedi, I'm sure Return of the Pug will be out and we'll know for sure what the theatrical subs looked like.
Hey Harmy, I just registered (or rather re-registered, since I apparently had an old account long fogotten) to give a heartfelt thank you. A friend screened your despecialized versions of the OT for a group of pals on Easter Sunday, and they blew us all away. Thank you thank you and, ok one more time with feeling, THANK YOU!!
It's been the proverbial long, long time since I first saw Star Wars about two weeks into its theatrical release in the Spring of '77. With each passing and largely infuriating change, I've been longing to get back to that beloved version.
I've reviewed most of this thread, though hardly not all of it. But I'm all asquee you're working on a version 2.0. Heheh, no worries from this quarter that you're going to take your time with it and do it right when you can manage to devote the time and effort. For me, this has been over 30 years in coming - so more waiting is insignificant at this point.
Just wanted to give you some added encouragement and some well-earned kudos. Your efforts are sincerely appreciated by many.
The original theatrical subs on Jedi is very different from what was on the DC laserdisc release and the original subs don't contain any of those misspellings mentioned. Everything from timings to line breaks are different. I did a re-creation of them some time ago for d_j's DVD using the footage that appear in the documentary "Empire of Dreams" and a theatrical bootleg Video_Collector sent me, Treadwell have since then uploaded a much better quality bootleg and Puggo's 16mm is another one, so there is plenty of references out there.
Mindofone, on this page: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Greedo-Jabba-subtitles-theatrical-placement-and-fonts/topic/11463/
you can see how the original subtitles looked, I found Trade Gothic Bold to be a close match but only close. The subs on Jedi differ slightly from the subs in the first film.
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.
Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com
Hey Harmy!
Thank you for the update!
I wish you a lot of luck for your exams and will come back here then at the end of May.
Btw. I watched the official Blu ray release a few days back and now I know why your version 2.0 will be a release that will long be remembered ;-)
May the force be with you and all the best wishes!
Good luck with your exams partner!!
He’s no good to me dead
There are subtitles for this release? I'm brazilian and I'm willing to resync some subtitles to match this release, but if someone provides some correctly timed subtitles, it will make the work much easier.
thanks in advance

If you have the Brazilian GOUT discs, PM me. I'm still dubious of the quality of my Portuguese subs for ESB and ROTJ, but the ones for SW are good.
While we all play the waiting game, Harmy, any though that you might work the Scofield project in as an alternate audio trackÉ Seems like a natural - theatrical presentation, 1977 theatrical audience participation. Anyways, just a thought. Best of luck with finals!
And now back to the waiting game......forget this, the waiting game sucks, let`s play Twister.
