Here's a little alien-sub documentation if you want to reconstruct the theatrical subtitles for Star Wars and Return of the Jedi like they appeared on the original prints in '77 and '83.

Ok, I've done my own recreated subtitles in AviSynth, I used "Trade Gothic Bold", it's not a perfect match but it's the closest I've seen yet, some of the letters come closer in "AlternateGotNo3D" but overall I think "Trade Gothic Bold" is the closest match.
My scripting experience in AviSynth is limited so maybe someone can make a more compressed script out of it if you think it's unnecessary long ;)
Keep in mind that these scripts are made with g-force stabilizing scripts in mind, that means that the placement of the subtitles will only be "correct" using his slightly different image cropping, also the PAL-version of Jedi which the script is based on have a slightly different cropping/framing than the NTSC-version. The SW subs are timed against Moth3r's bootleg telecine and the Jedi subs are timed against the Empire of Dreams footage and Video Collector's "theater performance" - Jedi bootleg. I've checked the old documentaries "Classic Creatures" and "From Star Wars to Jedi" for the original theatrical font, but unfortunately it was the old home video font in those clips, so if anyone knows were they may show up or be obtainable from, it would be great for re-creation.
Anyway, I always thought that Jedi used a slightly different font than Star Wars but the pics above shows that they used the same, albeit a little taller, which makes font comparison a lot easier as the Jedi are in better quality!
The best match I've got is TradeGothic Bold, which is damn close. Another one is AlternateGotNo3D, but you must change the height and width etc. for them to fit. Any suggestions are welcomed, IMO the subtitles are as much a part of the films as the opening Crawl.

I'm not entirely sure but I think the theatrical SE used Franklin Gothic, the "A long time ago" text was also updated with Franklin I think, but it could be worth to check, thanks.

WormI know the 2004 editions changed the "A Long Time Ago..." font (and color) of all three movies to match the Prequels. But yeah, now that you mention it, the font of that title (in the originals) does look somewhat similar to the font used in the alien subtitle scenes in the US version at least.

It depends on which VHS, doubleofive. I think they come in a few variations. Here is another, taken from the doc. "Classic Creatures". (looks like FF Dirty-Seven) Probably used on home video in the eighties.

Ok, I'm posting the few pictures I have on the SE-subs, maybe someone will find them useful, the font looks like one of the many Franklin Gothic versions. The same font was possibly used in the prequels.

EDIT: The prequels seems to use the same font but with straight apostrophes instead of curly ones.

Can someone please tell me what the subtitles looks like on the Return of the Jedi SE Laserdisc?
The reason I'm asking this, is that I want to be sure the caps on Jedi above is the original theatrical subtitles from '83, it surely looks like it if you compare them with the SW subtitles on Puggo's transfer, but if that is the case... How the hell can that footage be in so good shape in that documentary!?

Master of the UniverseFrom my nearly 30 year old copy of the film videotaped off of HBO or ShowTime. Obviously, the pan-and-scan format won't offer properly positioning, but it's another font reference. I think Star Wars is the very first thing my family ever videotaped, and I did a good job of wearing it out for 10+ years.

I'm now 100% sure that STAR WARS and JEDI used the same font. You could previously see that the SW subs weren't equally tall as the Jedi font on the pictures above but when I tried to compare my recreated ones with Puggo's footage, I noticed that the footage in puggo's transfer was squished compared to the Gout, I don't know why that is, but I've updated the caps above. And you can now clearly see the similiarity between SW and the Jedi font.
I'm working on a script for avisynth at the moment in attempt to make a good recreation of the Greedo subtitles. An exact match of the positioning is unfortunately out of the question as you have to pay attention to TV overscan and different image cropping on the Gout. Will post the script when I'm done if anyone is interested.

Yes, I found this too.
I originally tried the match the theatrical subtitles when doing the Pwnage Edition, but ended up squeezing them horizontally to ensure that they remained in the safe title area.

Moth3r, is the timings of the subtitles in your Pwnage script taken from one of the Laserdiscs or did you get them from the VHS telecine bootleg? If your timings are accurate it would be easy to use them.

Reginald ScumThat looks great! If I end up doing my own encode I will definitely use this. The version I currently have is chopped off by overscan and is in the black bar area, so it would great to watch the film with the subtitles the way they should be.
Are you also going to do the Jedi subs? None of those are overscanned, but I would like to see them done properly as well.

dark_jedi asked me the same question, I had no plans to do Jedi but if you're happy with the result of these maybe I should try it out. It will be a little harder though, I don't have the dirty work done already that Moth3r did with Pwnage, and I don't know the actual timings and line-breaks of all the subs in it and some of the lines do not appear horizontally centered in the frame as with SW but otherwise it should be very easy. It would be great with more actual footage from it as a reference though as the LD captures may not have the correct timings and line-breaks in them.

OT's bucketbotThis is neat-o. I remember msycamore and I taling about some of the comparisons in another thread. I forget where that was, though... We both came to the same conclusion by looking at specific shapes and thicknesses of certain letters. I don't think it was narrowed down to the extent it is here, so this is nice to see. :)
