If the SE & BR versions were never rereleased...

Would any of you care to "preserve" them? Do you think most of the apologists would care (and subsequently complain on their own alteredtrilogy.com)?

It seems to me that if GL released the OUT and declared it the only real version, everyone would be fairly happy. I see no value in preserving GL's ongoing and haphazard edits. The real version IS the OUT whether George Lucas likes it or not. All the rest will only be Edits. At most, those changes belong on a future bonus disc.

One SW BR review (forget the site) noted that books are sometimes rereleased with various changes without people clamoring for the original version. But I'd say books are qualitatively different (the site ultimately agreed). [Reminds me of a protracted argument we once had...] Anyway, bunch of different thoughts, but do you care at all about "saving" every new version Lucas develops?

I wouldn't care about them but I'm sure someone would, especially the SE, I don't know about the BR, it seems quite a few people think he crossed a line with the BR. A lot of people don't mind some of the changes, probably the "universally" hated changes are Greedo shooting, Jedi Rocks, Hayden's ghost and now the NOOOOOO!!!!! Other very objectable changes would be Mos Eisley with its cartoon dinasours and the shuttle scene in Empire, but I don't think everyone hates them.

Yes, but I don't think it's about hating them. It's about the changes being so unnecessary, silly, haphazard, etc that even for those who 'enjoy' them probably wouldn't care if they weren't there anymore.

People who discovered Star Wars in 97 with the SE would be upset to not have the possibilty to watch it. Well maybe some of them even ARE upset of the few (but horrible) new changes on the BR.

It would not be a big deal such as the missing originals, of course. Because "movie history" would be safe without any available SE. But still, I think it would also be a slap in the face of some fans to not present them in DVD and Blu Ray.

I would care if they were unavailable, as they would be very noteworthy historic curiosities. I would want the altered scenes available as extras at least, but if you are going to do that then you might as well branch them back in; after all, if it was good enough to release in theatres, it should be good enough to let people see on video. People here go nuts over any sort of "alternative cut" of the films, this would be a holy grail of sorts if it had never been released, and I think most people would agree that at least some of the alterations were welcome and enjoyable.

I don't know what we would do about preserving it if were never released on video though--a theatre cam bootleg? I don't think there ever was one. Probably we'd just go by stills and highly detailed accounts of the film, probably confirmed by 35mm collectors. Probably eventually someone would throw up a 35mm print and film the screen and then leak the footage on Youtube so you have a crude representation of the changed scenes. I don't think there would be a huge fervour over it all like with the OOT though, it would like the way the deleted scenes or Holiday Special was treated, e.g. highly sought after and enough to make you buy a new boxset but not any sort of requirement.

Some of the altered scenes are really good (in a special alternate edition) and they should be preserved for historical reasons.

I took my niece to see the 97SE and it was the last time I saw any of the OT material in a cinema I also have fond memories of watching the VHS of the SE with friends so I also declare a sentimental attachment to it.

wouldn't care anymore about any SE if OUT was properly restored. but wouldn't be bothered by saving the 97 as bonus - like the blade runner set. include the documentaries that discuss the restoration and the 20th anniversary celebration. my fondness is really more for that than the actual changes.

the 2004 and 2011 can burn. has a lot of sloppiness, re-revisions and just lucas playing with his toys (the 97 has this too, but at least a few of the changes are legit and documented).

but the 97 SE should be the very last thing saved and not at the expense of any other bonus. Example, I hear that the 'From Star Wars to Jedi' documentary was not included in BD set. if it were up to me and I could only include one more disc, I include this and not the 97 SE.
