Info Wanted: Best Episode III Edit?

Hey guys, I’ve recently started getting into the world of fan edits and I love the way they add the possibility of an improved film purely because of re-editing. Anyway, as the Star Wars saga seems to be the one that’s edited the most (plus I think it’s a pretty fun franchise, not a MASSIVE fan but I respect it) I’ve started burning the best fan edits I could find for each episode to DVD. I’ve got the Phantom Edits for Epsiode I and II, Adywan’s Episode IV edit (and waiting for V) to be released, and just got Spence’s Epsidode VI edit.

I’m at a dilemna with Episode III, however. I’ve found some a good number of edits for it, but some of them either trim things I’m a fan of, such as the Yoda vs. Palpatine duel, or either trim things too much, i.e. 30 minutes plus. So in your opinion, what’s the best Episode III edit that stands alongside the Phantom Edits in terms of quality?

Sorry, I stopped reading after this.

Heh. Can you seriously explain why everybody hates that fight so much?

If you have to ask...it can't be explained to you.

Anyway, if you really want edits that include it, follow the link in my sig and download the cutlist summary spreadsheet.  It will tell you which edits (available on FE.org) kept the fight.

The only edit missing in the spreadsheet is kerr's edit.  I've been hearing it's one of the best (if not the best) ep3 edits available, but I've only seen about half of it to this point so I don't know what he did with the fight.

I think a lot of people here will disagree with your opinion about "too much cutting" bouerbouer, especially in the case of Yoda fighting.  But, here are a few threads already posted on these boards (and others) that will give you the answers you're looking for:

Personally I think L8wrtr's Shadow of the Sith is the best EP1 edit, and he's in the process of doing the second two (at the same time).

I haven't seen edits of 2 or 3, but Kerr's Dark Force Rising edit of 3 seems to be universally loved.

Obviously Adywan's edits are amazing, but Dark_Jedi is just now releasing great versions of the theatrical original trilogy.  More info here.

Well thanks for that. Since the fight is such a small section (it's only about 3/4 minutes long right?) and as mentioned before I'm not a MASSIVE follower of Star Wars, could you just give a suggestion in general as what is the best Episode III edit? The fight being there was just a preference and not really a necessity.

And thanks for those links RedFive, reading through those threads as well now.

JasonN's is my preferred at the moment, though L8wrtr's may take its place when released.

As previously stated, people seem to love kerr's.

Kerr's seems interesting, but for me 88 minutes seems as if too much has been cut. I've been looking at Spence's and Stankpac's edits quite a bit since they seem to remove as little as possible yet still improve upon Episode III, are either of those any good?

Honestly, if you're worried about cut time, I would watch the original DVDs once (to watch the complete, canonical films), and then watch some of the edits.  That way you don't have to worry about missing out on anything, and at the same time you get to see some awesome fan edits that make the movies better (which often times means much shorter).

This is what I've done, since it had been years since I originally watched the prequel trilogy.  Otherwise you could be too focused on "what did I miss" when watching the fan edits for the first time.

Just my 2c.

Spence's edit seems to be the closest to the Phantom Editor's ones.

If you want cool stuff like yoda vs. palpatine, your best edit should be... the theatrical release!

But yeah, BobGarcia if you want an original tetralogy.

I'm partial to KillerSandbox's edit of Episode III.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

I find it difficult to work out what im going to like or not

So ended up downloading most of them at some point and to be honest they all mostly cut the same bits (please dont kill me for saying that anyone!), I would say Kerr's is best so far for episode 3 (of those currently released)

don't let the shorter run time put you off - try it and see what you think.

Killer Sandbox came out with his edit a few years ago. It takes ADM's as a starting point, and then cuts some additional things from there. Also, the movie had film grain and other imperfections (scratches, etc.) applied. IIRC, it wasn't anything too radical, but it took out just about all the annoying stuff that ruins Episode III for me (like Dooku's flip).

I found out about his edit from another forum member here. I had to have the disc mailed to me, since it wasn't anywhere online.

Minus the cutting out the annoying stuff, was it any good?

Have you seen some other ROTS edits, Erikstormtrooper? If so, how does the Killer Sandbox compare?

I agree.

I ´checked a couple of EIII edits and JasonN´s is by far the best.

I doesn´t make it a good movie (still has tons of awful dialogue and bad acting) but far more bearable.

I have seen a couple, but I can't remember the names right now. I really haven't seen that many. My personal test of an Episode III edit is the Dooku flip. If an editor has left this in, I know the edit's not for me.

The Killer Sandbox version tries to emulate the Phantom Editor's approach, just cutting out what doesn't work. He even uses the same movie header with countdown at the beginning, like the Phantom Editor did.

I've seen quite a few. When Kerr's came out I think I had gotten sick of the movie altogether but I've finally seen it. I would recommend that one. Stancpac's is next best for me.

I'm going to recommend Kerr's Dark Force Rising, Stankpac, and actually my own edit of Ep. III as the ones I like to watch the most. (notice I didn't say best... I tried to cut Ep. III into a version I'd enjoy, and I was pretty successful, I do enjoy watching that edit.) Kerr's, though short, really changes a lot of things in a very interesting way. L8wrtr's version is sounding more and more interesting all the time, so that one will be good once finished too.

I'd say go for variety! The best thing about Star Wars is that everyone has a different idea of what makes it good for them. The different interpretations are endlessly interesting.

Whatever happened to Adigitalman's edit of the film?  It doesn't seem to be going around at all right now.

That’s impossible, even for a computer.

It's commonly agreed the duel reduces Palpatine and Yoda to cartoon characters, and that most the antics present are unintentionally  funny.
