I was just recalling how the official “IMAX Experience” cut of Episode II was a better film than the now familiar “digital cut” (on DVD), as it trimmed a lot of the sillier scenes, bad acting, and filler.
I realize that it had a square aspect ratio (equivalent to blowing up a full frame DVD to epic size), but I’m more interested in someone re-creating the shorter cut used.
That’d be pretty cool as a fan release!
Agreed; if only we had some kind of reference to edit together something like that! Since we have no known record of the actual edit for that film, we can only rely on people's memories. And you know how effective that can be...
(see: people claiming to have seen the Biggs scene or Luke missing with the grappling hook in the first film)
If we had at least a cam copy of the IMAX edit, someone could easily reproduce that in a fan edit. But so far, nothing of the sort has surfaced.

So, anybody up to the task?
This could be done as a quick and dirty "re-creation." It doesn't have to be pan 'n' scan, but that could complete the "Illusion" if desired.
Anyway, I'd love to see it, and I would recommend the IMAX cut to others who were annoyed by Episode II in general.
It'd be far more interesting than re-creating the "theatrical" (non-digital) cut of Episode II (though that would be neat too, just for the sake of preservation). I mean, there were literally three different cuts of Episode II out in theaters during its initial run!
Yes, this version doesn't really look like very worthy actually, because the things they throw out are not only things one should throw out of this movie. I would rather see Phantom editor's AOTPh done in a big resolution and colour corrected. That is probably one of the best Fanedits around and in a really minor technical shape. I simply believe that some people around this site can make better judgment on Lucas' work then Lucas himself. It sounds rediculous but if he could, we wouldn't be here.

I remember seeing the IMAX edit of AotC when it was in theatres and wishing that it had been the version of the film released to regular theatres as well. The film was considerably better in its edited form, with so much of the painful romantic subplot expunged.
My favourite edit of Episode II remains Attack of the Phantom by the Phantom Editor. An excellent, well thought out and well executed edit. The commentary track is particularly interesting and enlightening.

I agree, AOTP is the best fan edit. All other edits either cut too much or too little. Somehow, this edit manages to keep some of the cringeworthy lines... but it makes them work!
Now, what I think would be an interesting project is taking the ac3 5.1 track from AOTP and somebody editing AOTC video to match it, thus having AOTP in high quality. (with the exception of the couple of shots he rotoscoped, I'm sure with some filtering a couple brief shots could blend in with the rest)
Not to get off topic but I definitely agree with you two that Attack of the Phantom is the best Attack of the Clones edit. The only things I disliked in it were the lack of a real opening crawl and the Yoda fight kept in despite the Phantom Editor's dislike of that scene. A restoration of it would those two changes would be amazing. Is anyone wiling to take on such an undertaking? (I currently cannot because I am working off of an 8-year old computer that doesn't have any good editing capabilities because my real computer crashed.)

The imax cut was the best theatrical version simply by being less painful than the real version which just plainly sucked.

It's funny, I had a chance to see this version but I declined as I didn't want to see AOTC again, only bigger and louder. I had no idea it would become such an in-demand product. Now where did I put that time machine?
Saw AOTC several times theatrically and remembered I saw it in IMAX. Didn't notice the cuts honestly. The full-frame thing makes sense because it did look off. But not as off as the Omnimax version!
