A question for everyone here...It is 1994 and YOU are in charge of the entire production and story ideas for the PT films

It is 1994 and you are handed the keys to the caslte  and in charge of the entire production and story ideas for the PT films. How do you handle it? What do you do?

The first step I take is bring in those who  loved and had something emotionally invested into the story  back. Kurtz, Kasdan and Marcia lucas and perhaps one othe well rspected writter for kasdan to work with and YES I have george lucas direct episode 1.

2nd I decide to use old cameras for the filming. Why? Because I want the films to feel as much like the original three as possible when beign viewed by the fans. Later after it is all done I can ciovnert them and upgrade the quality after they are released.

Anakin started out in episode 1  around 17  yrs old. Qui gon is in this film byut not as  bens master  but as a fellow jedi and friend and it is obi wan who is reckless not qui gone.  Obi wan and anakin strike up a friendship  and fight side by side in some battle in episode 1 and obi one sense and strong force in him and only at the end does  obi wan decide to take anakin as a student even thoug  he is clearly  way too old but they are more friends/old war buddies  by this  point. the first film would be like   that of platoon and  saving private ryan etc…etc in the  idea that it shows anakin and obi wan in a war and fighting side by side and creating a bond together.

this is my way of handling  the pt films.  what is yours?

Hal, there's a whole section of the forum dedicated to rewriting the prequels.  Take it over there.

Back in '94 I was only about seven years old and I hadn't yet seen any of the Star Wars films, so ...

I was 5 and had already worn out my Jedi tape.  We had to buy a new one.

I wore out Empire a year or two later.

this is not meant for people to tell their own story line or script for the pt but more of how would you have gotten the ball rolling on production and who would you hire  etc..etc

I'd hire Richard Donner as a director. He's shown he can deal with young actors (Goonies) and special effects (Superman). I'd start the script ASAP and be prepared to put lots of work into it and drafts of it. I'd hire Lawrence Kasdan to co-write it. To re-ignite Star Wars fever, I'd plan a big re-release of the OT... but I'd make these editions SPECIAL by re-inserting deleted scenes.

Hmmm...it's 1994 and ME, you say?

What the fuck is that supposed to mean?

Stop making threads.

If i was George i would have left Star Wars alone after 1983.  And left Indiana Jones alone after 1989.

And go on to retire a film legend with my legacy intact and my riches or move on to those experimental films i had been  talking about for years and years.

But i am not Lucas.

The only thing i would be slightly more interested in seeing than the originally planned prequels, or sequels is the alternate Jedi Kurtz talked about.

The version of the film where han would die and Luke walks off on a solitary journey as a Jedi.  And Leia becomes the Queen of her people.

Luke and Leia are not brother and sister but neither are they lovers.

Luke does not confront the emperor until the sequel trilogy, and he does not find his sister yet til then either.  Whom he later trains as a Jedi, passing on what he has learned.

Jedi would have resolved the Vader conflict.  He would have been dead by the sequel trilogy.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

What's it mean?  Maybe you should ask the posters who responded to it. They were smart enough to get it or maybe you just wanted another attempt to be a smart ass and start an argument and derail a thread.  You must have a sad life and hate yourself.  I would bet my bottom dollar you are a

1994 i was 23 and just about to get my first taste of making movies in London (just look me up on IMDb after you guess my name).

Perfect location and age and ego to demand I direct the prequels my way (old school cos digital was big risk back then) at one of the big London sound stages.

I'd let George do the story and assuming he came up with The Phantom Menace, I'd story edit like crazy and open with an older class Star Destroyer launching a pod down onto Tatooine - it lands and Darth Maul emerges.

(filler goes here)

I'd let George keep the space battle in at the end, and we'd find out that 10 year old Anakin was indeed a natural and competant pilot, being mentored in a two seater Y-wing that is shiny and brand new. It's OB-1 Kenobi in the co-pilot's seat. OB-1 is a clone of Ben Kenobi whom Anakin will not meet in person until the next episode which Lucas tells me will be called Attack of the Clones.

^By "filler" don't you mean "the rest of the movie"?

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

"[George Lucas] rebooted the franchise in 1997 without telling anyone." -skyjedi2005

"Yeah, well, George says a lot of things..." a young 1997 xhonzi on RASSM

"They're my movies." -George Lucas. 19 people won oscars for their work on Star Wars (1977) and George Lucas wasn't one of them.

Rewrite the Prequels!

Actually, I think this approach has a lot of potential. My inclination has been to begin with a 16 to 18 year old Ani. However, if the Leading Lady is also 9 or 10, that could work well.

I have a wild theory (probably projection) about the developement of TPM:

By '94, GL had narrowed things down to two different storylines.

The first, Ani is 9 years old and 'ET' plays a great influence. 'ET' was wildly successful because it was both a beloved pet and the new neighbor kid that moved in, became best friend, and then had to move away. Everyone could relate and feel deeply for it. Parents loved seeing it beside their children. I think Padme was supposed to be that "Angel."

The second story line was quite different. The focus was on the female's "Hero's Journey." 'JOA' served as the primary influence. In this, I suspect that Padme was 14 and Ani was to be 14-18. She is a "Knight" and possibly a Force wielder (sounding familiar?)

Why were these two storylines merged? I have a sneaking suspicion that a cute little film from '87 had something to do with it. I think GL saw 'Adventures In Babysitting' and thought it was one of the few nearly perfect screenplays and also a premier example of the female "Hero's Journey." Chris sets out to rescue a weaker friend, collects a company of  mischievous creatures, is menaced by a lecherous dark knight on a red steed, must overcome or befriend other ne'er-do-wells to protect her little ones, and must find her true prince and "marry" this son of the immortals in the end.

'AIB' also had a heartwarming little sub-plot. The boy, a few years younger, falling madly puppy-dog in love with the teen-aged babysitter. It's the sort of thing nearly everyone can relate to, in a bittersweet way.

I think GL wanted to have it all, raising his Leading Lady to Queen in the process.
